Why is your Xiaomi router running slowly?
If pages load forever, videos are constantly โbufferedโ and online games are lagging โ the problem is not always in the provider. Most often, the Xiaomi router itself is to blame, which eventually begins to โslow downโ due to improper settings, overloaded network or outdated software. Even top models like the Xiaomi AX6000 or Redmi Router AX5 lose up to 40% of performance if not optimized.
In this article, 10 proven ways to speed up Xiaomi routers, from basic (change Wi-Fi channel) to advanced (alternative firmware), we will discuss how to diagnose bottlenecks, which settings to change first, and what to do if nothing helps. All methods are tested on models from 2020-2026 and do not require special knowledge, only attention to detail.
โ ๏ธ Important: Before any changes, record your current speed through services like Speedtest or Fast.com, so you can objectively estimate the increase after optimization. If the speed on the cable (connected directly to the PC) is as low as on Wi-Fi, the problem is with the provider, not the router.
1. Change Wi-Fi Channel: How to Avoid Neighborhood Interference
The most common reason for slow Wi-Fi is congested channels. In apartment buildings, dozens of routers broadcast on standard channels (1, 6, 11 for 2.4 GHz), causing interference. Even if you have a dual-band Xiaomi AX3600, the problem can be in the wrong choice of channel in the 5 GHz band.
To find a free channel:
- ๐ฑ Install Wi-Fi Analyzer (Android) or NetSpot (iOS/macOS).
- ๐ Run network scanning โ the program will show the load of channels.
- ๐ Select a channel with the minimum number of intersections (for 2.4 GHz - 1, 6 or 11; for 5 GHz - any of the free channels).
- โ๏ธ Go to the routerโs web interface (192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com) and change the channel in the Wi-Fi section. โ Wi-Fi settings.
โ ๏ธ Note: In the 5 GHz band, channels above 100 (e.g., 149-165) may not be supported by some older devices. If after changing the channel, some gadgets stop seeing the network, go back to channels 36-48.
2. Optimize your DHCP and DNS settings
By default, Xiaomi routers are used DNS-ISP, which is not always the fastest, and I also have the wrong settings. DHCP (automatic IP) This can cause delays in connecting devices.
What to do:
- Change. DNS faster: ๐ Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 ๐ Google DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 ๐ Yandex DNS: 77.88.8.8 and 77.88.8.1 (optimized for Russia)
You can change the DNS in the routerโs web interface: Settings โ Internet โ DNS settings.
Reduce the DHCP pool
If less than 20 devices are connected to the router, limit the range of handouts. IP-For example, instead of 192.168.31.100-192.168.31.200, set 192.168.31.100-192.168.31.120.
๐ก
Before changing your DNS, check their speed on your device using the DNS Benchmark (Windows) or DNS Changer (Android) app.
3. Update the router firmware (officially and unofficially)
The router's firmware is its "operating system." An outdated version may contain bugs, vulnerabilities and unoptimized code that slows down. Xiaomi regularly releases updates, but they are not always installed automatically.
How to update the official firmware:
- Go to the routerโs web interface (miwifi.com).
- Open the General settings section โ Update the firmware.
- Click Check for Updates and follow the instructions.
Also check the list of connected devices in Device Management. Older gadgets (such as a forgotten smartphone or a smart light bulb) can hang on the network and take up resources. Disable them or lock them.

5. Set up QoS (Quality of Service) to prioritize traffic
QoS (Quality of Service) allows bandwidth to be distributed between devices and traffic types, for example, by prioritizing online games or video calls while limiting torrents or OS updates.
How to set up QoS on Xiaomi routers:
- Go to Additional Settings โ QoS.
- Enable the function and select the priority type: ๐ฎ Games โ Minimum Delays for Online Gambling. ๐น Streaming Videos: A Priority for YouTube, Netflix. ๐ฌ Video Calls โ Optimization for Zoom, Skype.
speed-up
Save the settings and restart the router.
โ ๏ธ Note: If your tariff is symmetrical (the same download and unload speed), in the QoS settings, specify the real values, not the โmaximumโ from the contract. For example, if the provider promises โup to 100 Mbpsโ, and in fact gives 80 โ enter 80.
6. Check the temperature and location of the router
Overheating is one of the main causes of arbitrary reboots and slowdowns. Xiaomi routers (especially metal-hulled models like the AX3600) warm up more if:
- ๐ฅ Standing in a closed cabinet or next to the battery.
- ๐ฆ Dustful (clean the vents once every 3 months).
- โ๏ธ They are under direct sunlight.
The optimal location of the router:
- ๐ก 1-1.5 meters from the floor (on a table or shelf).
- ๐ In the middle of the apartment, if possible).
- ๐ซ Away from microwaves, cordless phones and other sources of interference.
If the router is too hot, try:
- ๐ช Put it on a cooling stand (for example, for laptops).
- ๐ Enable the power saving mode (if any in the settings).
- ๐ ๏ธ Disassemble and clean dust (only if you are confident in your skills!).
๐ก
The router temperature above 60ยฐC is critical โ this leads to trottling (automatic performance reduction) and can bring the device down.
7. Reset the router to factory settings (if nothing helps)
If all previous methods failed, there may be too much โjunkโ in the routerโs settings โ incorrect firewall rules, conflicting parameters, or configuration failures โ in which case a complete reset will help.
How to reset the Xiaomi router:
- Press and hold the Reset button (usually located on the back) for 10-15 seconds until the indicators start flashing.
- Wait 2-3 minutes for the router to restart.
- Connect to the network. Xiaomi_XXXX (password is indicated on the router sticker).
- Go to the web interface (miwifi.com) and reconfigure the router following the wizardโs instructions.
โ ๏ธ Note: After reset, all settings (including Wi-Fi passwords, associated devices, and QoS rules) will be lost. Save the configuration to the file in advance via General Settings โ Backup.
If the speed is still low after reset, the problem may be:
- ๐ก Hardware malfunction (burnt out Wi-Fi chip or port) LAN).
- ๐ฆ Outdated router model (for example, Mi Router 3 will not pull the tariff of 1 Gbps).
- ๐ Problems on the provider side (call in support!).
8.Alternative methods: Mesh networks and repeaters
If your apartment is big or the walls are too thick, even the most powerful Xiaomi router may not be able to cope with the coverage.
- ๐ถ Mesh system (e.g., Xiaomi Mesh Router) AX3000): Multiple devices operate as a single network without losing speed.
- ๐ Wi-Fi repeater: amplifies the signal, but can reduce speed by 30-50%.
- ๐ Powerline adapters: transmit the Internet via wiring (useful if you can not stretch the cable).
How to connect the Mesh-system Xiaomi:
- Connect the main router to the Internet.
- Press the Mesh button on the main and secondary devices.
- Wait for the synchronization (the indicators will light up in blue).
- Connect to a new network with a name Xiaomi_Mesh_XXXX.
โ ๏ธ Important: When using a repeater or Mesh system, turn off Wi-Fi on the main router to avoid channel conflicts.
