Xiaomi Mi Router 4C is a popular home networking solution, but many users are faced with a problem: the default control interface is in Chinese or English. If you need to switch to Russian or another language, this process may not seem obvious due to limited firmware settings. Unlike newer models (such as the Xiaomi AX3600 or Redmi Router AC2100), where the language bar is integrated into the web interface, the Mi Router 4C does things differently.
In this article, we will discuss three official ways to change the language: through the web bar, the Mi WiFi mobile application, and an alternative method using third-party firmware (for advanced users), and you will learn how to fix common errors - for example, when a language change appears crankshackers or the router stops saving settings. All instructions are relevant for firmware 2023-2026 and tested in practice.
1. Preparation for the change of language: what you need to know
Before you start changing the language, make sure your Xiaomi 4C router meets the following requirements:
- π Connected to the power supply network and turned on (indicator) SYSTEM blazing).
- π Connected to the Internet (via WAN-port).
- π± You have a smartphone with the Mi WiFi app (available for Android and iOS) or a computer to access the web panel.
- π Login and password from the router (usually by default) admin/admin or indicated on the sticker below the device).
If you have never checked your router's settings, check the current firmware version first.
- Connect to the Wi-Fi router network.
- Open your browser and type in the address bar 192.168.31.1 (or miwifi.com).
- Enter your username/password and go to the Status section (or in Chinese).
- Find the Firmware Version line β if the version is older than 2.28.XX, we recommend you update before changing the language.
β οΈ Note: Developer Version routers may not support Russian, requiring a rollback to a stable version or custom firmware installation (see Section 5).
Method 2: Change language through the web interface (official method)
This is the easiest way, but it only works on supportive firmware (multilinguality). If you don't have a Language item in your interface, go to method 2.
Step-by-step:
- Connect your computer or smartphone to the network of the Xiaomi 4C router (via Wi-Fi or cable).
- Open your browser and type 192.168.31.1 (or miwifi.com).
- Enter the login and password (by default admin).
- In the top menu, find the icon. βοΈ (Settings) or (in Chinese).
- Select the System β Language section (or β).
- In the drop-down list, select Russian (or Russian) and click Save.
- Wait for the router to restart (it will take ~1 minute).
If the language has not changed after saving or Krakozabra appeared, try:
- π Update the browser page (Ctrl) + F5).
- π§Ή Clear your browser cache or try another one (such as Chrome or Firefox).
- π Reset the router with the Reset button (hold 5 seconds).

3. Method 2: Changing language through the Mi WiFi application
Mi WiFi mobile application often offers more options than the web interface, but changing the language will require:
- Install Mi WiFi from the App Store or Google Play.
- Connect to the network of the Xiaomi 4C router.
- Launch the application and wait for the device to be automatically detected.
- Enter the login / password (by default admin).
- Go to the Settings section β General β Language.
- Select Russian and confirm the change.
If the app does not have the option of changing the language, try:
- π± Update your WiFi to the latest version.
- π Change the language of the system on your smartphone to English (USA) β sometimes this will unlock additional options.
- π Reinstall the application and try again.
β οΈ Note: On some of the firmware Xiaomi 4C Mi WiFi may not show the routerβs interface language correctly (e.g. Chinese characters instead of Russian), in which case the installation of alternative firmware will help.
| Method | Required. | Time. | Risks. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web interface | Computer/smartphone, browser | 2-5 minutes | Low (Cracacosiabras possible) |
| Mi WiFi appendix | Smartphone, app | 3-7 minutes | Medium (may not work on older versions) |
| Custom firmware | Computer, Ethernet cable | 15-30 minutes | High (risk of "bricking") |
Method 3: Resetting and selecting language when you first set up
If previous methods didn't work, you can return the router to factory settings and select the language at the first configuration.
Instructions:
- Find the Reset button (small hole) on the back of the router.
- Take a paperclip or toothpick and hold the button for 10-15 seconds until the SYSTEM indicator starts flashing orange.
- Release the button and wait for the reboot (the router will return to factory settings).
- Connect to the network. Xiaomi_XXXX (password free) and open 192.168.31.1 browser-wise.
- At the initial setup stage, select Russian in the list of languages.
- Complete the configuration by following the wizard's tips.
If you reset your tongue to Chinese again, the problem is the firmware, and then you can only install an alternative firmware.
π‘
Before reset, take a picture of the current router settings (wi-fi name, password, IP-address DMZ) β This will save time when re-configuring.
5. Alternative method: Installation of custom firmware with support for Russian
This is only suitable for advanced users and requires an understanding of SSH and firmware. Incorrect actions can bring the router down!
If the official methods didn't work, you can install firmware from the community, like OpenWRT or Padavan, which supports Russian and offers advanced customizations.
- β οΈ The router guarantee will be lost.
- β οΈ Risk of "bricking" (turning into a "brick") with firmware error.
- β οΈ Some features (such as Mi WiFi Mesh) may stop working.
The short instructions for Padavan firmware:
- Download the latest firmware version for Xiaomi 4C from the official Padavan repository.
- Connect the router to your computer via Ethernet cable.
- Open the router web interface (192.168.31.1) and go to Advanced Settings β Firmware Upgrade.
- Download the downloaded firmware file and wait until it is completed (donβt turn off the power!).
- After the reboot, the router will be available at 192.168.1.1 with a Russian interface.
What if the router does not turn on after the firmware?
6. Solving problems after changing language
Sometimes, when you change your language, you get mistakes, and here are the most common ways to fix them.
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Krakozabra instead of Russian text | Incorrect encoding in the browser | Clear the browser cache or try Firefox |
| Language strays after reboot | Firmware error | Update the firmware or install a custom |
| No Language item in the settings | Outdated firmware | Update your router via Firmware Upgrade |
| Mi WiFi app doesn't see router | Conflict IP-address | Reset network settings on your smartphone |
If none of the methods worked, check:
- π Router region: some devices purchased in China have language change restrictions. Check the sticker on the box - if specified CN Version, you may need to use Global Version.
- π‘ Router memory status: when overflowing NVRAM Make a Telnet reset command: nvram erase reboot
π‘
If the router is purchased in China (CN version), the official firmware can block the change of language, in which case only installing custom firmware or buying a global version of the device will help.
