Xiaomi routers are one of the most popular in Russia due to the combination of price and functionality, but their settings sometimes raise questions among users. In this article, we will analyze all the ways to change the password on Mi Router 4A, 4C, 5, AX3000, AX6000 and others, including cases when you forgot your old password or can not log into the control panel.
Whether you're using a router with MiWiFi or OpenWRT, we've covered both, and we'll also cover how to protect your network from hacking, choose a strong password, and avoid the typical setup errors. If you've never gone to the router's admin panel before, don't worry: the instruction is for beginners, with step-by-step screenshots and explanations.
Changing your Wi-Fi password on a Xiaomi router takes no more than 5 minutes, if you know the correct algorithm. The main thing is not to confuse the network password with the password from the router control panel (they may match, but this is not safe). In this article, you will find the answers to the questions: how to log in if the router does not request a username / password, what to do if you have a 404 or 502 Bad Gateway error, and why after changing the password, some devices do not connect to the network.
1.Preparation: What to Know Before Changing Your Password
Before changing your password, make sure you have access to the router control panel.
- πΉ Address: 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com (for new models)
- πΉ Login: Admin (or Xiaomi Account Linked)
- πΉ Password: listed on the router sticker (if not changed) or invented by you
If you don't remember the password from the admin panel, you'll have to reset the router to factory settings (instructions in section 4). Also check if your computer or phone is connected to the router's network - you can change the settings only from the local network.
Important: Once you change your password, all devices will disconnect from Wi-Fi and require re-entering new data. Prepare a list of gadgets that are connected to the network (smartphones, smart speakers, TVs) to quickly reconnect them.

If you have a router with OpenWRT firmware, the control panel address may be different β try 192.168.1.1.
2. Method 1: Change password through the web interface (the easiest)
This is the standard method that works on all Xiaomi models with the original firmware.
- Connect to the router network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable.
- Open your browser and type in the address bar miwifi.com or 192.168.31.1. Press Enter.
- Enter your username and password (admin and sticker password by default). If your Xiaomi account is linked, log in.
- Go to Wi-Fi β Wi-Fi settings (or Wireless β Security on old firmware).
- Find the Wi-Fi Password field (or WPA/WPA2-PSK). Enter a new password (selective recommendations - in section 5).
- Save the changes with the Apply or Save button.
If the router does not apply the settings after saving, restart it with the Power button on the case. On some models (for example, the Mi Router AX6000), the changes only take effect after restarting.

Method 3: Change passwords via Mi Wi-Fi (for smartphones)
If you donβt have access to your computer, you can change your password through the official Mi Wi-Fi app (available for Android and iOS), a method that is convenient for routers linked to a Xiaomi account.
Instructions:
- Download the Mi Wi-Fi app (or upgrade to the latest version).
- Open the app and log in to your Xiaomi account.
- Select your router from the list of devices.
- Go to the Wi-Fi section β Security settings.
- Enter a new password in the Network Password field and save the changes.
β οΈ Note: If the router is not linked to a Xiaomi account, this will not work, in which case use the web interface (section 2) or reset the settings (section 4).
Mi Wi-Fi also allows you to manage your guest network, lock devices, and set up parental controls, so if the app fails to connect to the router after changing your password, restart it or reinstall it.
4. Method 3: Reset the router if you forget the password from the admin panel
If you don't remember the login data to the control panel, you'll have to reset the router to factory settings, which will delete all user settings, including the Wi-Fi password, network name and associated devices.
How to reset the Xiaomi router:
- Find the Reset button on the routerβs case (usually it is recessed in the case and signed by RST).
- Take a paperclip or toothpick, press and hold the Reset button for 10-15 seconds until the indicators start flashing.
- Release the button and wait for the router to restart (1-2 minutes).
After discharge:
- πΉ Name of the network (SSID) standardize: Xiaomi_XXXX (where XXXX β last-minute MAC-address).
- πΉ Wi-Fi password will be listed on the router sticker.
- πΉ The password from the admin panel will be reset to admin (or an empty field on some models).
β οΈ Note: On Xiaomi routers with OpenWRT firmware, resetting the Reset button may not work. UART or TFTP β This is a complicated procedure, it is better to consult a specialist.

5. How to Create a Strong Password for Wi-Fi
A weak password is the main reason for hacking home networks, and hackers use brute force attacks, dictionary selection, or WPS protocol vulnerabilities to gain access.
- π Length: at least 12 characters (optimally 16)+).
- π Composition: large and small letters (A-Z, a-z, figures (0-9), symbolism (!@#$%).
- π Exclude: dates of birth, names, dictionary words, repeating characters (1111, qwerty).
- π Do not use: standard passwords like admin, password, 12345678.
Examples of strong passwords:
| Password type | Example | Level of security |
|---|---|---|
| Random set | kL9#pQ2$vR1! | βββββ |
| Replacement phrase | K0tVd0m@2026! | ββββ |
| Combination of words + symbols | Winter!Forest 77@ | ββββ |
| Weak password (do not use it!) | qwerty123 | β |
You can use password managers (KeePass, Bitwarden) or online services like Passwords Generator to generate a password. Don't store your Wi-Fi password in plain sight, write it down on paper and hide it in a safe place.
π‘
Never use the same Wi-Fi password and router admin panel. If a hacker hacks into the network, they will have access to all the router settings!
Typical errors and their solutions
When you change your password, you often have problems, and we'll look at the most common ones.
Problem 1: After changing the password, devices do not connect to Wi-Fi.
- πΈ Make sure the new password is entered correctly (registration is important!).
- πΈ Restart the router and the device that is not connected.
- πΈ Check if the router is on the filter. MAC-Addresses (wi-fi section) β Additional settings).
Problem 2: Control panel does not open (miwifi.com does not load).
- πΈ Check if you are connected to a router network (not mobile internet!).
- πΈ Try another browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge).
- πΈ Clear the browser cache or use incognito mode.
- πΈ If the router is new, it may require initial setup via the Mi Wi-Fi app.
Problem 3: The router issues a 502 Bad Gateway error while saving the settings.
- πΈ Reboot the router with the Power button.
- πΈ Update the router firmware (System section) β Update of the PO).
- πΈ If the error repeats, reset to factory settings (Section 4).
β οΈ Note: On Xiaomi routers with OpenWRT firmware, a 502 error may indicate a lack of memory.
7. Additional security settings
Changing your password is just the first step to protecting your network, and you should also set up:
- π‘οΈ Turn it off. WPS: This protocol is vulnerable to brute force attacks. β Additional settings and deactivate WPS.
- π‘οΈ Turn on the filter. MAC-Addresses: Allow connection only to trusted devices (wi-fi section) β Filter MAC).
- π‘οΈ Change the name of the network (SSID): Don't use the standard. Xiaomi_XXXX β It gives the router model to hackers.
- π‘οΈ Update the firmware: in the System section β Update the software check the relevance of the version.
- π‘οΈ Disable Remote Access: In the System β Remote management deactivate the option if you do not use it.
For advanced users:
- π§ Set up a guest network with a separate password for friends (wi-fi section) β Guest network).
- π§ Include DDoS protection in security β Network protection.
- π§ Use it. VPN on a router for traffic encryption (available on models with OpenWRT).
If your router supports WPA3 encryption (like the Mi Router AX6000), turn it on in your security settings. This is the most advanced security standard to date.
