How to configure Xiaomi 4A Gigabit Edition router via computer: from connectivity to fine optimization

Why to configure a router through a computer and what you need for this

Xiaomi Router 4A Gigabit Edition is one of the most popular Gigabit routers in Xiaomi’s lineup thanks to its combination of price, performance and functionality. Computer-based setup offers a number of advantages over the Mi Wi-Fi mobile app: greater fine-tuning, greater screen-friendliness, and access to advanced options that are often hidden in the mobile version.

In this article, we'll go through the whole process, from physical connectivity to network optimization for game consoles, IPTV or remote work. You don't need any special knowledge: the manual is tailored for users of any level, but the main thing is to follow the steps consistently and not miss details, especially if you're setting up a router for the first time.

What you'll need:

  • πŸ–₯️ Computer or laptop with an Ethernet port (or USB-to-Ethernet adapter if there is no port)
  • πŸ”Œ Cable LAN (It's complete with a router)
  • πŸ“‘ Xiaomi router 4A Gigabit Edition with power supply
  • πŸ“Ά Internet access from the provider (cable or data for the PPPoE/L2TP)

If you already have another router connected, we recommend resetting the Xiaomi 4A Gigabit Edition to the factory before starting. To do this, press the Reset button on the back for 10 seconds until the indicator starts flashing orange.

πŸ“Š How do you usually set up routers?
Through the mobile app
Through a web interface with a PC
Calling a specialist.
I do not use default parameters.

Step 1: Connecting the router to your computer and network

The first step is to physically connect the devices, and it's important to not confuse the ports and connect the cables correctly. On the back of the Xiaomi 4A Gigabit Edition, you can see:

  • πŸ”΅ WAN-port (blue) - for cable from the provider
  • 🟑 LAN-ports (yellow, 3 pieces) – for connecting a computer or other devices
  • ⚑ Portage
  • πŸ”„ Reset button (reset)

Sequence of action:

  1. Turn off the router power (if it was connected).
  2. Connect the cable from the provider to WAN-port).
  3. One end. LAN-insert the cable into any yellow port of the router, the other into the network card of the computer.
  4. Connect the power supply to the router and turn it on the socket.

Wait for the blue light on the front (meaning the router is ready to set up).If the indicator flashes orange, check the cables connection or try rebooting the device.

If your computer doesn’t have an Ethernet port, use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter. For stable operation, choose Realtek RTL8153 or ASIX AX88179 adapters – they are best compatible with Xiaomi routers.

Step 2: Log in to the router’s web interface

After you connect, you need to open the router control panel through the browser.

  1. On your computer, open any browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge).
  2. In the address bar, type 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com and click Enter.
  3. If the page does not open, check the network settings on your computer: πŸ”§ Open the control panel. β†’ Network control centre β†’ Change of adapter parameters. πŸ”„ Find a connection on the local network, right-click β†’ Properties. πŸ“‹ Select. IP version 4 (TCP/IPv4) β†’ Properties. πŸ”’ Set the boxes on Get IP-Address automatically and get the address DNS-server.

If the management page still doesn’t open after these actions, try:

  • πŸ”„ Restart router (turn off power for 30 seconds).
  • πŸ–₯️ Use a different browser or clear the current cache.
  • πŸ”Œ Connect to the router via another LAN-port.

When you first log in, the system will ask you to create an administrator account, and come up with a strong password (at least 8 characters, with numbers and capital letters) that you will need for all subsequent inputs to the settings.

What to do if an orange indicator flashes?
Orange flashing LED on Xiaomi 4A Gigabit Edition usually indicates a lack of Internet connection. The reasons can be different: - Incorrectly connected cable from the provider (check out the Internet connection). WAN-ISP-side issues (call support). – Connection type mismatch (e.g. PPPoE selected and ISP uses DHCP). - Firmware failure (solved by resetting to factory settings).

Step 3: Basic Internet Configuration (WAN)

Once you log in to the web interface, the first thing you need to do is set up your Internet connection. Go to the Internet section on the left menu. Here, select the type of connection your ISP uses.

Type of connectionWhen usedWhat data are needed
DHCP (Auto)If the provider issues IP automatically (most often at home rates)No (just connect the cable)
PPPoEIf the provider requires a login / password (Rostelecom, Beeline, MTS)User name and password (specified in the contract)
Static IPIf the provider has issued a fixed IP-addressIP, subnet mask, gateway, DNS
L2TP/PPTPRarely, usually for corporate networksServer address, login, password

For most users, DHCP or PPPoE will work. If you are not sure, check the connection type with the provider. After choosing the type, enter the required data and save the settings with the Apply button.

If the internet doesn't work,

  • ❌ Check if the username/password is correctly entered (registration is important!).
  • πŸ”„ Restart the router and computer.
  • πŸ“ž Contact your provider – it is possible that your link has been activated. MAC-address (to be cloned) MAC Old device in router settings).

Step 4: Set up a Wi-Fi network (name, password, channel)

Now, to configure the wireless network, select Wi-Fi (Wireless) from the menu.

  • πŸ“› Name of the network (SSID) β€” Create a unique name so you don’t confuse it with your neighbouring network.
  • πŸ”’ Password – minimum 8 characters, preferably with numbers and special characters.
  • πŸ“Ά Channel and channel width – for stable operation, select Auto or manually specify the least loaded channel (for example, 6 or 11 for 2.4 GHz).
  • πŸ”„ Mode of operation – for maximum compatibility, select 802.11 b/g/n/ax (If there are older devices 10 years, leave b/g/n).

For the net. 5 GHz (if your router supports it) repeat the settings separately. 5 GHz provides more speed but less coverage. If you have a larger apartment, it’s best to keep both networks active but with different names (e.g., a large apartment, MyWiFi_2G and MyWiFi_5G).

To avoid connection problems:

  • ❌ Don't use it in the network name (SSID) Cyrillic or spaces – some devices do not support them.
  • πŸ”„ If after changing the password, the devices do not connect, restart the router.
  • πŸ“‘ For a better signal, place your router in the center of the apartment, away from metal objects and microwaves.

πŸ’‘

For maximum network speeds of 5GHz, choose 80MHz channel width (if your devices support it). However, in apartment buildings, this can lead to interference - in which case, go back to 40MHz.

Step 5: Advanced settings (IPTV, port forwarding, parental controls)

After basic setup, you can optimize the router for your tasks.

1. IPTV setup

If your provider provides IPTV (for example, Rostelecom or MTS), you need to link the port for the TV:

  1. Go to the IPTV on the menu.
  2. Choose IGMP Proxy or Bridge (depending on provider).
  3. Indicate. LAN-port to which the TV or console is connected (e.g. port 4).
  4. Save the settings and restart the router.

2. port forwarding (port forwarding)

It's necessary for remote access to cameras, game servers or torrent clients.

  1. Run uTorrent on your computer and recognize the port in the settings (by default 6881).
  2. In the router’s web interface, go to Redirect β†’ Port Forwarding.
  3. Add a rule: πŸ“Œ Name: uTorrent πŸ”’ Outer port: 6881 πŸ”’ Inland port: 6881 πŸ–₯️ IP-Device address: specify local IP computer (can be found via ipconfig in the command line). πŸ”„ Protocol: TCP/UDP.

Save and restart the router.

Parental control

It allows you to limit Internet access to certain devices by time or block sites, for example, so that your child is not online after 22:00:

  1. Go to Parental Control.
  2. Add the device to the MAC-Address (you can find it in the list of connected customers).
  3. Set a schedule (for example, from 22:00 to 8:00 access is blocked).
  4. Apply the settings.

πŸ’‘

If, after setting up, IPTV The channels are down, check if Multicast is on in your TV or set-top box settings, and make sure the cable is connected to the correct one. LAN-port (which you have specified in the router settings).

Step 6: Update firmware and reset settings

Regular firmware updates fix vulnerabilities and improve stability. To update the Xiaomi 4A Gigabit Edition:

  1. Go to the System. β†’ Firmware update.
  2. Click Check for updates.
  3. If a new version is available, download and install it.

⚠️

Warning: Do not turn off the router during the upgrade! this can lead to permanent damage to the firmware, and the device will have to be restored through the TFTP-Regime (requires special knowledge).

If after updating the router is unstable (often restarted, the Internet disappears), reset to factory settings:

  1. Press the Reset button for 10 seconds.
  2. After restarting, reconfigure the router according to this instruction.

You can do this in the Internet section β†’ DNS settings.

πŸ”Ή How to limit Internet speed for a particular device?
In the web interface, go to bandwidth control β†’ Rules of limitation. Add a rule to indicate MAC-Device address and speed limits (e.g. 10 Mbps) are useful if someone at home eats up all traffic.
πŸ”Ή Can I use Xiaomi? 4A Gigabit Edition in repeater mode (repiter)?
No, this model does not support repeater mode. To expand the Wi-Fi network, you can use a Mesh system (for example, Xiaomi Mesh Router) or connect a second router via cable in AP mode (access point).
