If your humidifier, cleaner or Xiaomi robot vacuum cleaner suddenly gives a message βMake sure the water tank is installed correctlyβ (or a similar error in English β Please ensure the water tank is installed correctly), this does not always mean that the problem is in the tank itself. Most often the failure is due to touch sensors, a weak contact or a software failure. In 80% of cases, the error can be fixed independently without going to the service center.
In this article, we will look at all the possible causes of the error on Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier, Mi Smart Humidifier, Mi Robot Vacuum and other water tank models. You will learn how to check sensors, reset your settings, update your firmware and even fix contacts at home. And if the problem turns out to be hardware, we will tell you when to carry equipment for repairs and when you can do with low blood.
Why there is a water reservoir error: 5 main reasons
A report of a tank being installed incorrectly can be displayed even when the tank is still standing and there is water in it, and these are the most common causes of failure:
- π Poor contact between the tank and the base β oxidation or contamination of metal plates through which the device detects the presence of a reservoir.
- π§ Insufficient water level β some models (e.g. Xiaomi Smartmi Air Purifier) P1) Blocking work at a level below the minimum.
- π Software failure β an error may occur after a firmware update or sudden power outage.
- π οΈ Damage to the water level sensor β ultrasonic or float sensors are most often affected.
- π Control board malfunction β if none of the methods worked, the problem may lie in the chip responsible for controlling the tank.
Interestingly, on Xiaomiβs robot vacuum cleaners (like the Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Lite), this error sometimes appears due to a clog in the mopβs water supply system. The water doesnβt pass through the filter, and the sensor βthinksβ there is no tank.
β οΈ Note: If the error occurred after a device crash or mechanical impact, do not try to repair it yourself. In this case, the probability of damage to internal components is high, and it is better to contact the service immediately.
Method 1: Reboot the device (works 60% of the time)
The simplest and most effective method is forced reboot, which helps if the error is caused by a temporary software failure.
Instructions:
- Disconnect the device from the outlet (or remove the battery if it is a robot vacuum cleaner).
- Wait at least 30 seconds β thatβs enough time for the capacitors to run out.
- Make sure the water tank is installed correctly (before clicking or fixing).
- Connect the power and turn on the device.
If the bug disappeared, the problem was a temporary system glitch. Xiaomiβs robot vacuum cleaners may need to be re-binded to the Mi Home app after such a reboot.
Method 2: Cleaning the tank contacts (for all models)
Over time, the metal contacts between the tank and the base of the device become oxidized or coated with plaque, which prevents the tank from being properly recognized, and cleaning the contacts helps in 30 percent of cases.
You'll need:
- 𧻠Cotton swabs or soft tissue.
- π§ Alcohol (or liquid for cleaning electronics).
- π Lupa (optional, to inspect small details).
Step-by-step:
- Remove the water tank from the device.
- On the basis of the device, find metal contacts (usually 2-4 pieces, located symmetrically).
- Wet the cotton swab in alcohol and gently wipe the contacts both on the tank and on the base.
- Let dry for 2-3 minutes (do not use a hair dryer!).
- Install the tank back before the characteristic click.
β οΈ Note: Do not use abrasive materials (sandpaper, hard brushes) - they can damage the protective coating of contacts, which will lead to corrosion.
Remove the tank from the device
Find metal contacts on the tank and base
Wipe the contacts with alcohol or a special liquid
Wait for complete drying (at least 2 minutes)
Install the tank back before the click-->
Method 3: Checking water levels and sensors
If the device is making an error, but the tank is installed correctly, the problem may be insufficient water or sensor failure.
1. Inadequate water levels
Some models (e.g. Xiaomi Smartmi Air Humidifier 2) block the operation if the water level is below the minimum level.
- π¦ There's a mark on the tank. MIN β Pour water above this mark.
- π« Do not use distilled water in humidifiers β it can damage the ultrasonic membrane.
- π After water is added, wait 10-15 seconds β the sensor needs time to recalibrate.
Failure of the water level sensor
If the water is higher MIN, But the bug remains, maybe the sensor failed. Xiaomi devices use two types of sensors:
| Type of sensor | Signs of malfunction | Models where used |
|---|---|---|
| Float-float | Error appears at any water level, float jamms | Mi Air Purifier 2/3, Smartmi Air Humidifier |
| Ultrasonic. | The device does not respond to changes in water level, emits extraneous sounds | Mi Humidifier 2, Viomi Humidifier |
| Capacitive | Error appears after water is added, sensor is not reset | Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop P |
To diagnose a float sensor, gently shake the tank - if a knock is heard or the float is not moving freely, the sensor needs to be replaced. Ultrasonic sensors are checked only in the service.
How to temporarily trick the water level sensor?
Method 4: Resetting settings to factory
If the error occurred after updating the firmware or changing the Wi-Fi network, a complete reset will help, which will return the device to its original state, but will delete all saved parameters (scheduling, account binding, etc.).
Instructions for different devices:
- π¬οΈ Mi Air Purifier air purifiers: Hold the power button for 10 seconds until the indicator flashes yellow.
After discharge:
- Connect the device to the Mi Home again.
- Update the firmware to the latest version (if available).
- Check to see if the error has gone away.
π‘
If the device does not connect to Wi-Fi after reset, try using the mode. AP (To do this, hold the Wi-Fi button on the device for 3 seconds until the indicator flashes quickly. Then connect to the MiAP-XXXX network from your smartphone and complete the setting.
Method 5: Update the firmware (if the error is after the update)
Sometimes the "water tank not installed" error appears after a failed firmware update, in which case:
- Recoil on the previous version (if backup is available).
- Forced flashing through Mi Home or manually.
For manual updates:
- Download the latest firmware for your model from the official Xiaomi website.
- Unpack the archive and rename the file to update.zip.
- Place the file in the root of the flash drive (formatted in the FAT32).
- Connect the flash drive to the device (some models use a connector). USB Type-C on the back).
- Hold the reset button (or button combination, see model instruction) for 5-10 seconds until the update starts.
It takes 3-5 minutes. Don't turn off the power while you're firmware!
π‘
If the error persists after the update, try flashing the device through Mi Home in Recovery mode. β Settings β Update of the PO β Rebuilding the system.
Method 6: Contact or sensor repair (for advanced users)
If neither software method worked, the problem is probably the hardware.
1. soldering iron not needed: restoration of contacts
If the contacts are oxidized or rotted, they can be repaired without soldering:
- π§ Carefully bend the contact plates with tweezers (if they bent).
- 𧴠Apply a thin layer of conductive paste (such as Contact 60) to the touchpoints.
- π¨ If the contact fell off, fix it with double-sided tape (temporary solution).
Replacement of the water level sensor
To replace the sensor will require:
- π Buy the original sensor (the article is indicated in the documentation for the device).
- π§ Torx screwdriver T5/T6 (hull-breaker).
- 𧲠Tweezers and soldering iron (if the sensor is soldered).
The following is a step-by-step guide for Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 3:
- Remove the back cover by unscrewing 4 screws.
- Disconnect the sensor plume from the board (carefully, do not damage the connector!).
- Remove the old sensor and install a new one.
- Put the device back together.
β οΈ Warning: Disassembly of the device voids the warranty. If your device is warranty, it is better to contact the Xiaomi service center.
Method 7: Contact a service center (when nothing helps)
If youβve tried all of these, but the βmake sure the water tank is installedβ error still appears, there are two options:
- The official service of Xiaomi is warranty repair (if the device is warranty) or paid diagnostics.
Before the service visit:
- π Write down the serial number of the device (located on the sticker at the back or under the tank).
Average prices for repairs (in Moscow, 2026):
| Type of repair | Cost (β½) | Date(s) |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning/repairing contacts | 800β1 500 | 1 |
| Replacement of water level sensor | 1 500β3 000 | 1β2 |
| Management board repair | 3 000β6 000 | 3β5 |
| Diagnosis (unless repairs are confirmed) | 500β1 000 | 1 |
If the device is older than 3-4 years, it makes sense to assess whether it is worth repairing, for example, replacing the control board with the Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 2 can cost 50-70% of the cost of a new cleaner.
