Determining the release year of a Xiaomi Redmi smartphone is a task that users face when buying a used device, warranty repairs or checking the originality. The manufacturer does not always indicate this information in a prominent place, and the data in the settings can be misleading (for example, showing the activation date, not production). In this article, we will discuss 5 working methods, including analyzing the serial number, checking the box, using service codes and even physical inspection of the board β with nuances for different generations of Redmi (from Redmi 4A to Redmi Note 13 Pro+).
It's important to understand that the year of release and the year of launch of the model are different things. For example, the Redmi Note 10 Pro announced in March 2021, but a specific instance could be released in June 2022. Also, some methods (for example, IMEI verification) do not work for all regions, we will warn you about this separately. If you need to not only know the year, but also verify the authenticity of the device, move to the section on originality verification.
Serial number: decoding of the date of production
The most reliable way is to analyze the serial number (S/N), which contains encoded information about the build date. Xiaomiβs serial format has changed over time, but for most Redmi models (2016-2026), the rule is that the first 4-6 characters indicate the week and year of release.
Example: Serial number K6L5C19A05000123 stands for:
- π K6L5 β Plant and model code (not important for date).
- π’ C19A: C is the 12th letter of the alphabet = 2019 (A)=2010, B=2011,..., L=2021, M=2022, etc.... Week 19 to Week 19 (May).
| Letter of the year | Year of release | Examples of models |
|---|---|---|
| J | 2019 | Redmi Note 7, Redmi 7A |
| K | 2020 | Redmi Note 9 Pro, Redmi 9C |
| L | 2021 | Redmi Note 10, Redmi 10 Prime |
| M | 2022 | Redmi Note 11 Pro+, Redmi A1 |
| N | 2023 | Redmi Note 12 Pro, Redmi 12C |
β οΈ Attention: C 2023 Xiaomi has started using a new serial number format for some models (e.g. Redmi). 13C), where the date is coded differently. If your serial begins with 2308 Or something like that, it's a year and a week (23 = 2023, 08 = August).
2. Check on box and documents
The original Xiaomi Redmi box contains several production date markers, but you need to be able to read them. First, look at the barcode sticker (usually on the end of the box).
- π¦ Date of production in format YYYY-MM-DD or YY/MM/DD (for example, 22/05/15 = 15 may 2022).
- π Plant code (e.g, IND for India, CHN for China) β indirectly indicating the region and approximate period of release.
- π Serial number (repeats the one on the phone) β it can be decrypted using the method from the previous section.
If there is no box, check the warranty card or check: there is sometimes a sales date, note that between production and sale can take from 1 to 6 months (especially for models released for New Year's Day or large sales).
How to distinguish a fake Xiaomi box?
β οΈ Warning: Replicas of grey phone boxes are common in markets, and if the date on the box and the serial number on the phone don't match year-to-year, this is a reason to check the originality of the device (see Section 5).
3. Service codes and engineering menu
For advanced users, there is a way to find out the production date through the engineering menu.It doesnβt work on all models, but for most Redmi based on Qualcomm (for example, Redmi Note 8 Pro, Redmi 9T), the following method is suitable:
- Open the phone app and enter the code: ##4636##
- Go to the tab Information about the phone.
- Scroll down to the Build Date block, where the firmware compilation date will be specified (example: Mon Jun 12 2023).
This date does not always coincide with the physical build of the device, but usually differs by no more than 1-2 months. For models on MediaTek (for example, Redmi 10A), try the code:
##36446337##Find the Hardware Info β Manufacture Date.
Enter service code | Find the tab "Phone Information" | Write down the build date (Build Date) | Compare to the serial number-->
β οΈ Note: Not all service codes work on new models (e.g. Redmi Note 13) If nothing happens after you enter the code, your firmware has blocked access to the engineering menu.
Physical inspection: board and battery
If you've got experience disassembling phones, you can look under the case. The motherboard and battery often have YYWW (year + week) production date on it.
- π On the battery: 2135 = 35-I'm a week. 2021 year (August-September).
- π₯οΈ On board: 2020.12.15 or 2228 (28th week 2022).
To get to the fare:
- Turn off the phone and remove it. SIM-map.
- Heat the back cover with a hairdryer (60β80Β°C) or use a suction cup for careful removal.
- Unscrew the screws (usually T3 or T4) and remove the metal screen.
- Look for the labeling next to the processor or on the back of the board.
π‘
If you're afraid of damaging your phone when you disassemble, take a picture of the board through the magnifying glass without removing it. The date is usually visible without being completely dismantled.
β οΈ Warning: Disassembling the phone will void the warranty (if it is still valid), and on new models (for example, Redmi Note 12), the board can be protected by an additional adhesive layer - it will require a special tool (spudger) to remove it).
5. Verification of originality and related data
It is not enough to know the year of release - you need to make sure that the phone is not fake or "repackaged" (when the old model is passed off as a new one).
- Check IMEI through Xiaomiβs official service: Go to mi.com/global/verify. Enter IMEI (you can find it in Settings β About Phone β General Information or on the box). Check the model and activation date with the data on the phone.
Mi Check
Google Play
- π± Exact model (e.g, M2101K7AG For the Redmi Note 10 Pro).
- π Loader Unlock Status.
- π οΈ Information on the guarantee (if applicable).
If the data from the Xiaomi website and the serial number differ by more than 3 months, this is a cause for suspicion.
- π Build quality: the original Redmi has no backlashes between the body and the screen, and the buttons have a clear stroke.
- πΆ Networks: Fakes are often not supported 4G/5G or have a weak signal.
- π Battery capacity: check in Settings β Battery β if it is much lower than the stated (for example, 3500 mAh instead of 5000), the battery could be replaced.
π‘
Even if the year of release coincides with the stated, check the originality through IMEI. Counterfeiters often copy serial numbers from real devices.
6. Alternative methods: firmware and logs
If none of the above methods worked, try analyzing the system logs or firmware date:
- CPU-Z (System β Build Date)
These methods are less reliable, since the firmware date can be updated when software upgrades are made, but if the phone has never been updated, it will be close to the release date.
β οΈ Attention: Use ADB requires on-set debugging USB (Settings β The phone. β Version. MIUI β 7 times press to unlock developer options. Incorrect commands can cause system failure.
