The term “brick” has long been a household name for Xiaomi users, which refers to the condition where the smartphone stops responding to buttons, does not turn on, is not determined by the computer — in short, turns into a useless “piece of plastic and metal.” But why does this happen? Most often, it is due to bad firmware, malfunctions during software updates or hardware damage. In 80% of cases, “bricking” is the result of the user’s actions, not factory defects.
In this article, we will look at all the possible reasons why Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO can become a brick, learn how to recognize symptoms in the early stages and, most importantly, look at recovery methods, from simple (reset via Fastboot) to complex (reflashing through EDL). If your phone is no longer showing signs of life, do not rush to bring it to the service: in most cases, the problem is solved by yourself.
What is a “brick” and what are the types
“Brick” is not an official term, but a slang term for total or partial loss of performance of a device, and in the case of Xiaomi smartphones, there are three main types:
- 🧱 Soft Brick: The phone turns on but only loads to the Mi logo or hangs on the screensaver. Sometimes responds to Fastboot or Recovery.
- 🧱 Hard Brick: The device doesn't turn on at all, doesn't respond to charging, doesn't detect the PC.
- 🧱 Bootloop: The phone is constantly rebooting without reaching the desktop.
The most dangerous option is a hard brick, as it often requires special equipment (for example, a hard brick, EDL-Soft brick, by contrast, is usually treated by flashing through Fastboot or resetting through Recovery.
Interestingly, some Xiaomi models (such as the Redmi Note 10 Pro or POCO F3) have “brick protection” – they automatically go to Fastboot mode when a critical failure occurs.
The main reasons why Xiaomi becomes a brick
Most of the bricks are the result of user error, but there are also hardware problems.
- Bad firmware through Fastboot or Recovery, for example, if you tried to install custom firmware (like LineageOS), but forgot to unlock the bootloader or downloaded a file not for your model.
- Interrupted Software Update: If power is turned off during an update via OTA or Mi Flash Tool, the phone may lose critical partitions.
- Errors when unlocking the bootloader: Using unofficial tools (like XiaomiTool) or incorrect sequence of fastboot oem unlock commands.
- File system damage: Often occurs after a factory reset or system files are deleted via Root.
- Hardware failure: Fall, moisture, overheating or failure of flash memory (eMMC).
Critical error: firmware file persist.img This section stores unique data from the device (IMEI, MAC-If you overwrite it, the phone will lose communication, Wi-Fi and may completely refuse to turn on.
| Reason. | Type "brick" | Can I restore it on my own? |
|---|---|---|
| Failed firmware through Fastboot | Soft/hard | Yes (via Mi Flash Tool) |
| Interrupted OTA-update | Half-brick. | Yeah (recovery reset) |
| Damage persist.img | Hard. | No (needs EDL or service) |
| Hardware failure (memory, motherboard) | Hard. | No (repair only) |
⚠️ Note: If the phone has become a brick after being upgraded via Mi Community, don’t try to flash it through Fastboot – first check if Xiaomi is blocking the downgrade firmware for your model. For example, on Redmi Note 12, after upgrading to HyperOS, return it to the back. MIUI 14 can only be done through EDL.
Signs that Xiaomi is turning into a brick
Bricks rarely come on suddenly, usually preceded by symptoms that you can see in advance.
- 🔄 Logo fixation (infinite download more than 10 minutes).
- 📵 Does not respond to the power button, but vibrates when charging.
- 🖥️ Defined by a computer as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (mode) EDL).
- 🔋 Charges but does not turn on (indicator on, screen black).
- 📲 Issues a mistake This MIUI version cannot be installed on this device in Recovery.
These are signals that the device is on the verge of bricking, and at this stage, you can still save the situation, for example, by rebooting in Fastboot (Power + Vol Down) or Recovery (Power + Vol Up).
The symptom is especially dangerous when the phone vibrates when connected to a PC, but is not defined as a drive, which is a sign that the boot or recovery partition is damaged, and you can not do without firmware.
💡
If Xiaomi is stuck on the logo, try to press the power button for 20-30 seconds, sometimes it helps to get out of the loop without firmware.
How to Restore Xiaomi After a Soft Brick
If the phone turns on but doesn't load beyond the logo, or goes into Fastboot/Recovery, it's a soft brick, and you can restore it in a number of ways:
Method 1: Resetting through Recovery
Suitable if the phone enters Recovery Mode (on most models - clamp Power + Vol Up when the device is off).
- Select a language (if menu is available).
- Go to Wipe Data → Wipe All Data (full reset).
- Confirm the action and wait for the completion.
- Choose Reboot. → Reboot to System.
If after resetting the phone again stuck on the logo, it means that the firmware is damaged - proceed to the next method.
Method 2: Fastboot (Mi Flash Tool)
You'll need:
- 💻 Windows computer.
- 🔌 Cable USB Type-C (preferably original).
- 📁 Fastboot firmware for your model (download from the official Xiaomi website).
- 🛠️ Mi Flash Tool (last version).
Step-by-step:
☑️ Preparation for firmware through Fastboot
- Turn your phone to Fastboot (Power + Vol Down)
- Connect to your PC and check that the device is determined (the device manager should have Android Bootloader Interface).
- Launch the Mi Flash Tool, press Select and specify the folder with the unpacked firmware.
- Select Clean All (complete cleaning) or Clean All and Lock (if you want to lock the bootloader after you have firmware).
- Press Flash and wait until it is completed (usually 5-10 minutes).
If the process ends with a critical partition flashing error is not allowed, then you have the bootloader blocked.
⚠️ Note: On models with a MediaTek processor (e.g. Redmi) 9A or POCO C31) The firmware on Fastboot may not work. SP Flash Tool and scatter.txt file.
Recovery after a “hard brick» (EDL-regime)
If the phone doesn't respond to buttons, doesn't charge, and is defined by the computer as a Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008, it's a hard brick. It can only be recovered through Emergency Download Mode (EDL).
This will require:
- 🔌 EDL-cable (or a lintel on the motherboard for forced transfer to the EDL).
- 💻 Mi Flash Tool or QFil (for Qualcomm).
- 📁 Firmware in.mbn or firehose format (for your model).
- 🔧 Qualcomm drivers (manually installed via Device Manager).
The recovery process through EDL is more complicated than through Fastboot and requires care:
- Put the phone in mode. EDL: With help. EDL-cable (close the contacts) GND and EDL plug-in USB). Or through the command adb reboot edl (if ADB still working).
Mi Flash Tool
Clean All
Flash
After successful firmware, the phone should automatically restart.
Important: Firmware through EDL drop off IMEI And the serial number, and they're going to have to be restored separately with tools like this. MTK Engineering Mode or QCN-file.

Frequent Recovery Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Even experienced users sometimes make mistakes that make things worse, and here are the most common ones:
| Mistake. | Effects of consequences | How to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| The firmware is not for its model | Hard brick, loss of IMEI | Check the firmware name (for example, toco_global for POCO X3 Pro) |
| Use the old version of the Mi Flash Tool | Sahara or Firehose errors | Download the latest version from the official website |
| Interrupting the firmware | Partition damage, complete loss of data | Use a laptop with a charged battery or UPS |
| Firmware without unlocking the loader | Anti-rollback error or blocking | First, unlock the bootloader via fastboot oem unlock |
Another common problem is the anti-rollback error, which occurs when you try to flash an older version of software than the one already installed. For example, on the Xiaomi 11T Pro, you can't return a MIUI 12 if you already have a MIUI 13, and only the firmware through the EDL with a full cleanup will help.
⚠️ Note: On models with a MediaTek processor (e.g. Redmi) 10C) firmware SP Flash Tool can lead to loss of IMEI, unless NVRAM Always back up through MTK Droid Tools before the firmware!
When recovery is not possible: hardware causes
It's not always a software problem, and if the phone doesn't respond to EDL, doesn't warm up when charging, and isn't detected by the computer even as an unknown device, it's the hardware.
- 🔋 Failure of flash memory (eMMC or eMMC) UFS). Symptoms: The phone vibrates when connected to a charger, but does not turn on.
- 🔌 Short circuit on the motherboard, which can happen after a failed firmware, if there was a voltage surge.
In these cases, self-repair is not possible, you need a diagnosis at the service center.
- Replacement eMMC/UFS: from 3 000 before 8 000 ₽.
- Interpling of chips: from 5 000 to 15 000 ₽.
- Power controller repair: 2,500 to 6,000 ₽.
Before you bring your phone to the service, try to warm it up with a dryer (60-70°C for 5-10 minutes). Sometimes this temporarily restores contact with the chips that have fallen off, and the device turns on for a few minutes - enough to make a backup of data.
💡
If Xiaomi doesn't respond to charging, buttons and PCs don't -- 90 percent of the time, it's a hardware problem. Don't waste time on software recovery methods.
