The power button on Xiaomi is one of the most vulnerable elements: it fails more often than the display and battery. If your Redmi Note 10, POCO X3 or Mi 11 stopped responding to a press, do not rush to carry it into the service. In 70% of cases, the problem can be solved independently, from the trivial cleaning of contacts to the replacement of the plume. But first you need to determine the cause: it can be both a software failure and a mechanical failure.
We've put together all the working methods, from the simplest (ADB reboot) to the most complex (body disassembly and soldering). Importantly, some methods require special tools, such as a mediator to open the case or a multimeter to check the circuit. If you've never disassembled a smartphone, start with secure software solutions. And if the button only reacts at a strong press or at a certain angle, this is a sure sign of wear and tear, and you can't do without physical repairs.
1. Diagnostics the problem: why the power button is not working
Before you fix it, you need to understand what exactly broke. The power button on Xiaomi may not work for 5 main reasons:
- π Software failure β the system does not recognize the press due to firmware errors (often after updating) MIUI).
- π Battery discharge β if the charge is below 3%, the smartphone may not respond to the button.
- π§ Contact contamination β dust, moisture, or oxidation interfere with normal chain closure.
- π§ Mechanical wear β over time, the spring mechanism of the button wears off (typical for devices older than 2 years).
- π Trail damage β breakage or detachment of contacts on the motherboard (often after falls).
How do you tell a software problem from a hardware problem? Try these tests.
- Connect your smartphone to charge for 15 to 20 minutes. If you see a charging indication (even without a button), the battery isn't the problem.
- Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, sometimes it forcefully restarts the device.
- Connect your phone to your PC via USB, and if the computer recognizes it (connection sound, display in Device Manager), it's more of a software problem.
If none of the tests worked, move on to the next section. If your smartphone has any response, try software recovery first.
2. Software ways to enable without a power button
If the button doesnβt work, but the smartphone is basically βliveβ (reacts to charging or connecting to a PC), you can turn it on in alternative ways, which are suitable for most Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO models based on Android 10-14.
Method 1: Forced reboot via button combination
On most Xiaomi devices, a combination of:
Hold the power button + increase the volume 10-15 secondsIf it didn't help, try:
Hold the power button + volume reduction for 20 secondsOn some models (e.g. Mi 10T or POCO F3), you may need to press all three buttons simultaneously: Power + Increase + Volume Reduction.
Method 2: Enable via ADB (if USB debugging is enabled)
If you previously activated Developer Mode and enabled USB Debugging, you can turn on your smartphone via your computer:
- Connect your phone to your PC via USB.
- Open the command line (Win + R β enter cmd).
- Enter the command: adb devices If the device appears in the list, execute: adb shell input keyevent 26 (this emulates the press of the power button).
π‘
If the adb device command does not work, update the Xiaomi drivers through the official website or use the Mi PC Suite program.
Method 3: Recovery via Fastboot
If the smartphone loads into Fastboot mode (black screen with a rabbit and the inscription Fastboot), but does not respond to the power button, you can try to reflash it:
- Download the official firmware for your model from the MIUI Download website.
- Unpack the archive and find the file. flash_all.bat.
- Connect the phone to the PC, holding Power + Volume Down.
- Launch it. flash_all.bat on behalf of the administrator.
β οΈ Note: Fastboot firmware erases all data on the device. If your phone had important files, try extracting them first. ADB or TWRP (if established).
3. Mechanical button cleaning: when it helps and how to do
If the power button sometimes works (for example, when pressed at a certain angle or with force), the problem is likely to be contamination of the contacts.
- π§ Plastic mediator or guitar mediator (to open the body).
- 𧴠Isopropyl alcohol (90% and above) or a special liquid for cleaning contacts.
- ποΈ Soft brush (for example, for drawing) or cotton swabs.
- π Lube or magnifying glass (optional, for accuracy).
Step-by-step:
Turn off the phone and remove it. SIM-map|Carefully tuck the back cover with the mediator, starting at the corner next to the power button|Apply a little alcohol to the cotton swab and clean the button contacts (don't rub too much!)|Blow the button with compressed air (for example, a canister to clean the keyboard)|Collect the case and check the operation of the button-->
If the button is better after cleaning, but the problem is still there, it may be because the silicone pad is wearing under the button, and if that happens, it's just a change of button or plume.
What to do if the button fails or creaks?
4. Replacement of the power button: step-by-step instructions
If the cleaning didn't work, and the button doesn't press or stops, it needs to be replaced. On Xiaomi models, the power button is usually soldered to a flexible plume, which is also responsible for adjusting the volume, and it requires accuracy, but it's possible to do it at home.
You'll need:
- π οΈ Set of screwdrivers (cross and flat, preferably magnetic).
- π₯ A soldering iron with a thin sting (power 20-30 W) and solder.
- 𧲠Tweezers and antistatic bracelet (optional but recommended).
- π Loupa or microscope for soldering.
- π¦ New power button (you can buy on AliExpress or in service centers).
Replacement process:
- Remove the back cover (carefully so as not to damage the battery plumes and cameras).
- Disconnect the battery (disconnect the battery plume to avoid short circuit!).
- Find the button plume β it is usually located next to the motherboard and is fixed with a metal frame.
- Unfilter the old button: Put the flux on the contacts. Carefully heat each contact with a soldering iron until the solder melts. Remove the button with tweezers.
- Set a new button: Place it in place, align the contacts. Salt each contact without overheating the plume.
Get your phone together.
| Xiaomi model | Difficulty changing a button | The cost of a new button (RUB) | Repair time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 8/9/10 | Medium (solding required) | 300β500 | 40-60 minutes |
| POCO X3/X4 | Tall (thin plumes) | 400β600 | 60-90 minutes |
| Mi 11/12/13 | Very high (complex disassembly) | 600β1000 | 90β120 minutes |
| Redmi 7A/8A | Low (button on a separate module) | 200β350 | 20-30 minutes |
β οΈ Note: On Mi 10, Mi 11 and later models, the power button is often integrated into a single plume with a fingerprint sensor. If you damage the plume when soldering, the fingerprint scanner will also stop working.
5. Alternative ways to turn on the phone without repair
If the power button is not working and you don't want to (or are afraid to) disassemble your phone, you can use your smartphone in alternative ways. Here are 3 working methods:
Method 1: Automatic on-time switching
Set up automatic turn on via Settings β Additional β Schedule on/off. Set a time when the phone should turn on daily (e.g. in the morning). Minus: this wonβt help if the phone is completely dead.
Method 2: Use of the USB-cable-function OTG
Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi Note 9 Pro) POCO F2 Pro) support inclusion through a special OTG-- I want you to connect the cable to the connector. USB-C and press the button on the adapter - this emulates the press of the power button.
Method 3: Connecting to a docking station or wireless charging
Some wireless charging devices (e.g. Xiaomi Mi Wireless Charging Pad) automatically turn the phone on when placed on them, and you can also use a docking station with automatic on (e.g. for Mi 11 Ultra).
π‘
If the power button breaks but the phone is powered on via charging or OTG, don't delay repair! prolonged use without a serviceable button can result in battery discharge to "zero" and complete data loss.
6.When to contact the service: signs of a serious breakdown
Not all power button breakdowns can be repaired by yourself. Contact Xiaomi Service Center if:
- π₯ The button sparkles or smells like a burn when pressed (a sign of a short circuit).
- π₯ The phone does not turn on at all, even through charging or ADB.
- π§ You have tried to replace the button before, but it doesnβt work after soldering (maybe the motherboard is damaged).
- π± Along with the power button stopped working other buttons (volume, fingerprint scanner).
- π¦ The phone fell into the water or was subjected to severe humidity (full diagnosis is required).
The cost of repair in official Xiaomi services:
| Type of repair | Cost (rupe) | Date(s) |
|---|---|---|
| Replace the power button (without soldering) | 800β1500 | 1β2 |
| Replacement of the button plume (with soldering) | 1500β3000 | 2β3 |
| Maternity Board Repair (in case of damage to the tracks) | 3000β6000 | 3β5 |
| Cleaning from oxidation (after moisture) | 1000β2000 | 1β2 |
Before the service visit:
- Make a backup copy of the data (if the phone is turned on somehow).
- Check if the service center has original parts for your model.
- Ask for a warranty for repairs (it is usually 6 months in official Xiaomi services).
7.Prevention: How to prolong the life of the power button
The power button on Xiaomi is designed for 50,000-100,000 clicks, but if used carelessly, it fails much earlier.
- π« Do not press the button with dirty or wet hands β this speeds up the oxidation of contacts.
- π‘οΈ Use a button-protected case (e.g. Xiaomi Original Case) to reduce dust intake.
- β‘ Do not hold the power button pressed for more than 3 seconds - this increases the load on the mechanism.
- π Regularly (every 2-3 months) clean the buttons with compressed air (an electronics canister).
- π± Set up a double touch to wake up (Settings) β Screen. β Double tap to wake up, so you can use the button less often.
If you drop your phone frequently, consider touch button models (such as the Xiaomi Mi Mix or POCO F4), where the mechanical power button is replaced with a virtual one.
π‘
On some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi Note 11), the power button can be switched off programmatically via Settings β Special features β Button management. This is useful if the button has started to stick but has not yet broken completely.
