Why does the Redmi button fail?
Broken power buttons on Xiaomi Redmi smartphones are more common than they seem, ranging from mechanical damage (fall, moisture) to software failures. For example, after the MIUI update, some users note that the button stops responding to presses or requires excessive effort. Other times, wear and tear of contacts becomes the fault β especially for Redmi Note 4/5 models, where the button eventually βdrowsβ in the case.
It's important to understand that without physical repair, you can't restore the button, but you can reboot the phone without it. The main thing is not to panic or try to disassemble the device yourself (this can lead to loss of warranty or damage to the plumes). Below we will discuss all the available methods, from the simplest to the most technically complex, that will help to revive the Redmi even with an out-of-work power button.
Spoiler: If the phone is empty, most of the ways you use it won't work, so you'll have to force the battery to be charged first (in a separate section).
Method 1: Reboot via the Power Menu (if the screen is running)
The most obvious, but often ignored, method is that if the Redmi screen turns on (for example, after connecting to a charge) and the power button does not respond, use the software reboot:
- Connect the phone to charge and wait for the lock screen to appear.
- Unlock the device (by fingerprint, PIN-code-key).
- Hold the blank area of the screen (not on icons!) for 2-3 seconds until the context menu appears.
- Click Settings (cog icon) β About phone β Reboot.
On some MIUI firmware, the path may differ: Settings β System and device β Additional β Reboot.
Battery level (minimum 10%)
Lack of important unsaved data
Wi-Fi connection (if you plan to upgrade after reboot)
Closing background applications (to speed up the process)
-->
If the Reboot menu is missing, try an alternative path: Settings β Applications β Application Management β Three dots (menu) β Reboot the system.
β οΈ Attention: On Redmi with unlocked bootloader, this method can cause a looped reboot. If the phone has previously been flashed by custom firmware, use other methods.
Method 2: Forced reboot via button combination
Even if the power button doesnβt work, most Xiaomi Redmi models are reset by a hardware keyboard combination, which simulates battery extraction (which is not possible on non-removable batteries).
Instructions:
- Hold the Volume Up button + Volume Down button at the same time.
- Without letting them go, connect the phone to the charger (or USB-port).
- Hold the buttons for 10-15 seconds until the screen goes out and reboots.
For Redmi Note 8/9/10 and later models, you may need to hold the buttons for up to 20 seconds. If nothing happens, try charging before holding the buttons.
| Model Redmi | Button combination | Retention time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redmi 4/5/6 | Volume Up + Volume Down | 10-12 sec. | It only works when connected charging. |
| Redmi Note 7/8/9 | Volume Up + Power (non-working) | 15-20 sec. | It can work even without the power button. |
| Redmi K20/K30 | Volume Down + Power | 8-10 sec. | Pre-charge (minimum 5%) is required |
| Redmi 10/11/12 | Volume Up + Volume Down + Charging Connection | 25 seconds | New firmware may require several attempts |

If the combination doesn't work, try holding the volume buttons after you plug in the charger, not before. Sometimes the sequence matters!
Method 3: Reboot through ADB (for advanced users)
If Redmi has USB debugging enabled (in the developer settings), you can reboot it via your computer using the Android Debug Bridge (ADB), a method that requires pre-setting, but works even with a completely non-functioning power button.
Step-by-step:
- Install Platform Tools (the official package from Google) on your PC.
- Connect Redmi to your computer via USB-cable (preferably original).
- Open the command line (Windows) or terminal (macOS/Linux) in the adb folder.
- If the phone is selected (the serial number will appear), continue. If not, check the driver or cable.
- Run the reboot command: adb reboot For forced reboot (analogue to battery extraction): adb reboot bootloader
If Redmi does not respond to adb devices, try:
- π Reconnect the cable to another USB-port (preferably) USB 2.0).
- π Restart your computer (sometimes the drivers will freeze").
- π± On the menu phone. USB-Connection to select File Transfer (MTP).
β οΈ Attention: Adb reboot bootloader or fastboot reboot commands can run your phone in Fastboot mode, which is difficult to exit without a working power button. Use them only if you are sure of the next steps!
What if the ADB canβt see the phone?
Method 4: Use of service codes (USSD-team)
Little-known life hack: Xiaomi Redmi (as well as other Android devices) has hidden USSD-This method works even without a PC connection, but requires the screen to be active.
Try the following commands (enter phone as a number in the standard app):
- π ##7780## - soft reset (does not delete data, but restarts the system).
- π *2767*3855# β full-reset to factory settings (β οΈ delete all data!).
- π ##0000## - Check the firmware version + Reboot option (on some firmware).
After entering the code ##7780##, the phone should offer a reboot confirmation. If the screen goes out without a reaction, wait 1-2 minutes, then try to wake the device with the volume buttons.
On the Redmi Note 10 Pro and newer USSD-The codes can be disabled by the manufacturer, in which case use alternative methods.
Method 5: Forced Charging + Rebooting (if the phone is discharged)
The most difficult situation is when the Redmi is completely discharged and the power button is not working, in which case you first need to "revive" the battery for at least some menu to appear on the screen.
Algorithm of action:
- Connect your phone to the original charger (or powerful Power Bank).
- Leave at least 30-40 minutes on charging (even if the indicator does not burn).
- After 20 minutes, try holding Volume Up + Volume Down for 15 seconds.
- If the screen doesnβt respond, turn off charging for 10 seconds, then plug in again and repeat button retention.
On some models (Redmi 7/8), the following trick helps: plug in charging β hold Volume Down 10 seconds β let go β hold Volume Up 10 seconds right away.
β οΈ Warning: If after 1 hour of charging the phone does not show signs of life (does not warm, does not vibrate), the power controller is likely to break down.

What do you do if nothing helps?
If all of these methods fail, there are two options:
- Service center β official Xiaomi centers will replace the power button in 1-3 days (cost: 1,500-3000) β½ The warranty is maintained if the phone is not disassembled independently.
- Self-repair only if you have experience with soldering equipment. The power button on the Redmi is soldered to the motherboard, and it requires care to replace it. The price of a new button is from 200. β½ AliExpress.
Before the service visit:
- π Backup your data (if the phone is switched on somehow).
- π Keep a check or a warranty card (if any).
- π Charge your phone to at least 30% β the service can check the battery performance.
If you decide to repair yourself, pay attention to the following nuances:
- π§ On the Redmi Note 9 Pro and newer, the power button is combined with a fingerprint sensor β you will have to change the entire module.
- π₯ When soldering, use No-Clean flux and a soldering iron with a thin sting (power no more than 40 W).
- π οΈ For disassembly, you will need a plastic spatula and a suction cup (the Redmi body is glued together, not assembled on latches).

If the phone is on but the power button is not working, use software methods (ADB, USSD, menus). If the screen is dead, try button combinations + charging. At the very least, a service center.
