Why canโt Xiaomi change the name of the contact?
Are you trying to edit the name in the phone book, but the save button is inactive? Or is the old data coming back after the changes? This problem is familiar to many Xiaomi owners, and the reasons may lie in different nuances of MIUI.
โ Synchronization with Google: if the contact is linked to the account, changes are blocked due to conflict versions. โ Duplicates: the system can โhangโ on old entries from the account SIM-Maps or messengers. - Limitations MIUI: In some versions of the shell, editing is possible only through the original Contacts app, and not through third-party clients like Truecaller.
In this article, weโll look at all the working methods, from basic to hidden MIUI 14/15 features, that will help even if the standard method doesnโt work, and how to avoid losing contacts when editing and why some names donโt want to change.
Method 1: Editing through the standard โContactsโ app
The most obvious, but not always working method: on Xiaomi Redmi Note 12, POCO X5 and other models with MIUI 14+ algorithm is:
- Open the Contacts app (an icon with a personโs silhouette).
- Find the right contact through search or scroll.
- Slip it โ click Edit (pencil in the upper right corner).
- Change the name in the name field (sometimes called the full name).
- Press Save (check or diskette).
โ ๏ธ Note: If the Save button is inactive, check:
- ๐ฑ Version MIUI: on old firmware (below) MIUI (12) confirmation may be required through SMS.
- ๐ Sync: Disable it in your Google account settings while you edit.
- ๐ Type of contact: SIM-The contacts are edited separately (see Method 3).

Is the Contacts app updated to the latest version on Google Play?-->
On some models (for example, Xiaomi 13 Lite) after saving the change is not immediately applied. To speed up the process, restart the application or smartphone.
Method 2: Change via Google Contacts (for synchronized records)
If the contact is linked to a Google Account, editing it through MIUI is problematic due to conflicting versions.
- Open your browser and go to contacts.google.com.
- Sign in with the same account as on your phone.
- Find contact through search or manually.
- Click on it โ Edit (pencil icon).
- Change your name and keep it.
Important: Changes to Google Contacts donโt sync to your phone instantly โ it can take up to 10 minutes. To speed up the process, manually update your contacts on Xiaomi: open Settings โ Accounts โ Google โ Sync โ Contacts and tap Sync.
| Problem. | Decision |
|---|---|
| Changes not applicable | Turn off sync with Google while editing |
| Duplicate contacts | Use the Unify function in Google Contacts |
| No sign of the Save button. | Try another browser (Chrome, Firefox) or clear the cache |
| The old version of the contact is back. | Remove the cache of the app Contacts on Xiaomi |
๐ก If you edit contacts frequently, add Google Contacts to your bookmarks or home screen, which will save you time, especially if you have multiple accounts.

Method 3: Editing contacts to SIM-map
Contacts saved on SIM-They're edited separately. They have limitations:
- ๐ Name and number are stored in text format + Numbers (without emojis, special symbols).
- ๐ Maximum length of name โ 15-20 Symbols (depending on operator).
- ๐ No additional fields (email, address) are supported).
Instructions for Xiaomi:
- Open Contacts. โ three-point (โฎ) โ Contact management.
- Choose Import/Export โ Contacts SIM.
- Find the right contact โ click on it โ Edit.
- Change your name and keep it.
โ ๏ธ Note: Some models (e.g. Redmi) 10C) editing SIM-Contacts are only possible through the call menu:
- Open the Phone app.
- Go to the Contacts tab.
- Tap it on three points. โ Contacts SIM.
Why? SIM-Contacts disappear after editing?
Method 4: Use MIUI-chips (hidden functions)
MIUI offers a few non-obvious contact editing methods that work even when standard methods fail:
1. Developer's Mode
If contacts โhangโ after the MIUI update, turn on the developer mode and clear the cache of system applications:
- Go to Settings. โ The phone.
- Slip 7 times on the MIUI version.
- Back to Settings โ Additionally. โ For developers.
- Find Do Not Save Actions and turn it off.
- Clear the cache for Contacts and Contact Warehouse applications.
Annex โSecurityโ
In some versions of MIUI 13-14, editing blocked contacts is possible through:
- Open Security. โ Optimization.
- Select Contacts โ Management of duplicates.
- Find the contact you need and edit it through the menu.
๐ง Technical nuance: On POCO F5 Xiaomi 12T This method only works if the contact is not tied to the Mi Account, otherwise there will be an error Not enough rights.
Method 5: Export, edit and import via VCF file
If the contact is not amenable to any of the ways, export it to a.vcf file, edit it to a PC and import it back, which works even for corrupted records:
- Open Contacts. โ โฎ โ Imports/Exports โ Export to file.
- Select your contacts for export (or all) and save the file to your device.
- Connect Xiaomi to your PC and copy the contacts.vcf file.
- Open the file in Notepad or Excel (via Data Import).
- Find the line with the desired contact (format: FN:Name) and edit it.
- Save the file and import it back to the phone.
โ ๏ธ Note: When editing.vcf manually:
- ๐ซ Don't delete the lines. BEGIN:VCARD and END:VCARD โ It'll break the file structure.
- ๐ For Cyrillic names, use encoding UTF-8.
- ๐ Before importing, make a backup of original contacts.
๐ก
If an error occurs when importing "Inappropriate format", try opening the VCF file in Google Contacts (contacts.google.com โ Import) and syncing with Xiaomi from there.
Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Even after successful editing, contacts on Xiaomi can be โresetโ or duplicated, and here are the most common problems and solutions:
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The name goes back to the old version. | Sync conflict with Google or Mi Account | Turn off sync for editing time |
| Change cannot be sustained. | Read-only contact (from messenger) | Copy the contact into local memory |
| Disappeared contacts after the MIUI update | Resetting the cache of system applications | Restore from Google backup |
| Duplicate contacts | Automatic connection disabled | Include in Contact Settings โ Combine duplicates |
๐ Diagnosis of complex cases:
- ๐ฑ If the problem only occurs with one contact, check for hidden characters (such as spaces at the beginning of a name).
- ๐ If the failure occurs after the update MIUI, Reset the Contacts app settings (Settings) โ Annexes โ Contacts โ Warehouse โ Reset).
- ๐ง If the contact came from WhatsApp or Telegram, it can be protected from editing. Copy it manually.
๐ก
Before any manipulation of contacts, back up your data via Settings โ System โ Backup. This will save your data in case of crashes or accidental deletion.
