Accidental deletion of an important number is a stress familiar to every smartphone owner. Especially frustrating when it comes to Xiaomi contacts that may have disappeared after a setting reset or careless swipe. Fortunately, the MIUI operating system and the Android ecosystem have many data protection mechanisms that many users are unaware of.
Data recovery is possible through cloud services, local backups, or even through SIM-It is important to act quickly and not write new data on top of old data so as not to overwrite memory sectors. In this article, we will discuss all working methods for returning lost numbers, from simple built-in functions to advanced tools.
Before we go to radical measures, it's worth checking the basic sync settings. Often the number is not gone, but simply stopped showing because of a filter failure or an account disabling, and understanding where your address book is stored will be key to successfully solving the problem.
Checking the display and synchronization settings
The first thing to do is make sure that the contact is actually deleted, not just hidden. In the Contacts app on Xiaomi, there is a convenient filtering feature that can limit the list of visible records. SIM-Map or local storage, numbers from the cloud will become invisible.
To check, open the app and find the settings menu, usually hidden under three dots or a gear. Under "Make contacts" select "All contacts" option, which will force you to update the list and show all the records currently available to the system.
Also worth checking is the status of your Google account. If sync has been disabled or authorization has failed, new numbers may not be saved or old numbers may not be loaded. Go to Settings → Accounts and Sync and make sure the slider opposite Contacts is active.
If you see your account but you don't have data, try manual sync. Click on your account name and select Sync, which can take a few minutes depending on the number of records and the speed of the Internet connection.
Restore through Google Contacts (Web-interface)
The most reliable way to recover lost data is to use Google's built-in archiving feature, Google Contacts automatically backs up every 24 hours, allowing the address book to roll back up to 30 days, which works even if the phone was reset to factory settings.
To perform the recovery, you'll need a computer or any browser on another device. Go to contacts.google.com and log in under the same account used on the Xiaomi smartphone. On the left menu, find the gear icon and select Restore.
⚠️ Note: When you restore from Google archive, all contacts added after the selected date will be deleted. Make sure you don't lose important new numbers that have appeared in the last day.
The system will suggest you to choose a time stamp: 10 minutes ago, 1 hour, yesterday or a specific date. Once confirmed, the rollback process will begin. On the Xiaomi smartphone, you need to wait for automatic synchronization, which will return all the numbers to their places.
This method is especially effective if you accidentally delete a group of contacts or an entire address book at once, and it allows you to instantly fix the error without requiring you to connect a cable or install third-party software.
Using the Mi Cloud to Recover Data
Xiaomi device owners have access to their own Mi Cloud storage, and if your device has activated a Mi Account account and enabled contact synchronization, a copy of your address book is stored on the company's servers, which is a Google-independent backup channel.
To check for a backup, go to i.mi.com via your browser. Log in to your Mi Account. In the cloud interface, select Contacts. Here you will see a list of all saved numbers. If the desired number is not here, then the sync was not enabled in advance.
If contacts are in the cloud but not in the phone, the problem lies in the sync process. Make sure that the phone settings (Settings → Mi Account → Sync) have the Contacts switch on blue. Also check if the correct storage is selected for default.
💡
Always keep Mi Cloud sync for contacts enabled, even if you use Google. This will create a double backup and protect data in the event of a Google account being blocked.
Importantly, Mi Cloud allows you to recover contacts piecemeal or in groups directly from the web interface, after which they automatically pull up to the phone, which is convenient if you need to return only a few specific records without affecting the rest of the database.
Import and export via VCF file
Local backups in.vcf (vCard) format are a universal way to store contacts. Many Xiaomi users periodically export contacts to phone memory or to the phone. SD-card without even realizing it when you make a backup through a standard application.
To import, open the Contacts app, go to settings, and select Import/Export Contacts. Next, select the source “Import from device memory” or “Import from storage.” The system will automatically find files with the.vcf extension.
If the automatic search didn’t produce results, use the file manager. Find a backup file (often called contacts.vcf or has a creation date in the title) and click on it.The system will prompt you to open the file with the Contacts or Save Contacts application.
| Method | Where it's stored | Storage period | We need the Internet. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Contacts | Google Cloud | Up to 30 days (archive) | Yes. |
| Mi Cloud | Xiaomi's Cloud | Indefinite (as long as there is room) | Yes. |
| VCF file | Phone/SD memory | Before deletion of the file | No. |
| SIM-map | SIM chip | Indefinitely | No. |
Once the file is selected, the system will suggest selecting an account to which you want to save the imported numbers, and it is recommended to choose a Google account to avoid future data loss problems when changing phones.
Recovery of data from SIM-map
The old but effective method is the test. SIM-Some users still store numbers directly on the operator's chip, when you reset your phone or rearrange it. SIM-cards to the new Xiaomi, these numbers may not automatically appear if the import is not performed.
The process is simple: in the contact management menu, select “Import with” SIM-The phone will scan the available space on the chip. SIM-Cards have limited memory and often crop long names or do not support additional fields (addresses, emails, etc).
⚠️ Note: When importing with SIM-Make sure you copy the contacts instead of moving them if you want to leave a copy on the chip. Although standard procedure usually creates a duplicate, rechecking will not hurt.
If the numbers are SIM-If the card is damaged or not readable, try pasting the card into another phone (preferably an old button or Android of another brand) and exporting them from there to a file, then transfer the file to Xiaomi.

Third-party recovery applications
If built-in methods don't work, you can use specialized software, applications like Dr.Fone, DiskDigger or GT Recovery scan the internal memory of a device for remote records, but their effectiveness depends heavily on access rights.
Without Root rights, these programs are limited in scope, they can only find data that is left in the cache or temporary files of the system, and if the phone was actively used after deletion, the memory sectors could be overwritten with new information, making recovery impossible.
Most powerful restorers require a USB connection to your PC and debugging mode. In the Settings → Menu, you need to press the build number 7 times to activate “Developers” and then turn on “Debugging over USB.”
Why do recovery programs not always work?
Using such software carries security risks, as you give third-party software access to all personal information. Use only proven solutions from known vendors and only in extreme cases.
Preventing future contact loss
To never face the problem of losing numbers again, you need to set up an automatic backup system, the best strategy is a combination: synchronize with Google for quick access and periodically export to the file for cold storage.
Configure your phone to store new contacts by default to your Google account, not your phone’s memory, and this is done in the Contacts app settings under Account for New Contacts, and every number you add will instantly go to the cloud.
It is also useful once a month to manually export the entire database to the file and send it to your messenger or save it to a separate folder of the cloud drive (for example, Yandex.Disk or Dropbox). This will take 10 seconds, but will save you in a critical situation.
💡
Automatic sync with Google is the only way to guarantee 100% safety of contacts in case of loss or breakage of a Xiaomi device.
Check regularly if sync is active, and sometimes after updating the MIUI firmware, privacy settings may be reset and background data loading is stopped, and control over this process should be constant.
