Cloning applications on Xiaomi: why it is necessary and how to configure

Many smartphone owners face the need to use two accounts in one app, such as one phone number for work and another for personal use. On Xiaomi devices with MIUI shell or the new HyperOS, this problem is solved at the system level thanks to the cloning feature, you do not need to install third-party programs or constantly log out of your profile to switch to another account.

Essentially, cloning creates an exact digital copy of an already installed application, and this copy works as a completely independent module: it has its own data, its own caches, and its own login settings. For the system, it looks like you installed the same program twice from different sources, even though technically it is the same installation file running in an isolated container.

In this article, we will discuss in detail how this technology works, what are the limitations and how to properly set up a second account in popular messengers. The principle of Dual Apps technology

A feature known as Dual Apps uses the isolation mechanism of Android processes. When you activate a clone, the system creates a separate user profile for that particular application. All the data that the cloned version records is stored in a separate memory area without intersecting with the original. This ensures security: if one application crashes, the second one will remain stable.

It's important to understand that cloning isn't available for all programs. The developers of the MIUI shell make a special list of compatible applications, most often social networks and instant messengers such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber and WeChat. Attempting to clone system utilities or games is often impossible without obtaining superuser rights (Root), since they do not have the appropriate permissions in the system manifest.

Technically, the process is as follows: the system replaces the packet IDs for the second copy. Once you've successfully created a copy, you'll see a new label on your desktop, which will be visually different from the original by having a small yellow tag in the corner of the icon, which is a standard MIUI token that allows you to quickly distinguish the main account from the secondary one. If you don't see the yellow tag, check the theme of the design — some third-party themes may be hiding the indicator.

It’s worth noting that for some apps, such as Facebook or Messenger, the system may offer not just a clone, but the installation of a separate official Lite app or a special version, if one exists, but most popular messengers use a built-in emulation mechanism.

Set up notifications and energy saving

One of the most common problems with cloned applications is the lack of timely notifications. Android and the MIUI shell are known for their aggressive energy saving policies, and they can automatically kill secondary applications processes, considering them less important than the main ones.
