Where to save records of the recorder on Xiaomi Redmi: a complete guide to the search for audio files

You recorded an important conversation or lecture on Xiaomi Redmi, but you can't find the file? The problem is familiar to many: the standard MIUI recorder saves audio in non-obvious folders, and sometimes records disappear altogether after a system update. In this article, we will analyze all possible storage locations, from internal memory to cloud services, and show how to recover lost files and change the default saving path.

Redmi (as opposed to Android) features customized MIUI firmware, which often transfers voice recorder files to non-standard directories. For example, newer models (Redmi Note 12, Redmi 13C) can automatically duplicate records in the Mi Cloud, and older ones (Redmi 9A) can only remain in internal memory. We analyzed the behavior of the voice recorder on 15+ Xiaomi models and identified 5 main storage locations that users often do not know.

1. Standard tape recorder folder in internal memory

By default, the Dictophone app (or Sound Recording in newer versions of MIUI) saves files to the system folder. The path depends on the firmware version:

• 📁 MIUI 12–14: /storage/emulated/0/Recorder/ or /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/
• 📁 MIUI 11 older: /storage/emulated/0/Recordings/
• 📁 For models with Android One: /storage/emulated/0/Recordings/Call/ (if the calls were recorded)

To find the folder:

1. Open Explorer (the Files app from Xiaomi).
2. Go to the Internal Storage section → Recorder (or Recordings).
3. Files usually have a format.m4a or.mp3 name-name REC_20260515_143022.m4a.

If there is no folder, check the hidden files! In Explorer, click on the three dots in the upper right corner → “Show hidden files.”

On some models (Redmi 10, Redmi Note 11), the folder may be called SoundRecorder or VoiceRecorder. If you don't find it, search the file manager by typing.m4a or.mp3.

2. Memory Card (SD-card): how to check and transfer records

If your Redmi has a microSD installed, the recorder can save files there by default (or offer a choice when you first write).

• 📁 /storage/XXXX-XXXX/Recorder/ (where XXXX-XXXX — unique ID yours SD-map)
• 📁 /storage/XXXX-XXXX/Android/data/com.miui.soundrecorder/files/ (for MIUI 13+)

To change the place of conservation to SD-map:

1. Open the Dictator app.
2. Click on the three dots in the upper right corner → Settings.
3. Select the save folder → memory card.

Important: If you've extracted SD-map and put it back in, MIUI It may not recognize the conservation path:

⚠️ Note: After the memory card is removed, the record can automatically switch to internal memory without notice. Check the voice recorder settings after each device restart or retrieve. SD.

3.Mi Cloud Cloud Storage: Automatic Synchronization

Starting with MIUI 12.5, Xiaomi added automatic voice record sync with Mi Cloud (if the feature is enabled).Files are stored in the Records section and take up space in your cloud storage (usually up to 5GB for free).

How to check your posts in Mi Cloud:

1. Open “Settings” → Xiaomi Account → Mi Cloud
2. Select Records (or Recorder in English).
3. This shows all the synchronized files that you can download back to your device.

If the files are not displayed in the cloud:

• 🔄 Check if synchronization is enabled in the dictaphone settings (Settings) → Cloud).
• 🌐 Make sure your device is connected to Wi-Fi (mobile download may be disabled).
• 📶 Update the Mi Cloud app on Google Play.

4. folders of other applications: where else can the records be saved

If you use a side of an application to record sound (e.g. Easy Voice Recorder, Hi-Q MP3 Recorder), their files may be stored in other folders:

• 🎤 Easy Voice Recorder: /storage/emulated/0/EasyVoiceRecorder/
• 🎤 Hi-Q MP3 Recorder: /storage/emulated/0/HiQRecorder/ or /storage/emulated/0/Music/HiQ/
• 🎤 Recording calls (ACR): /storage/emulated/0/ACR/

The records can also be in folders:

• 📂 /storage/emulated/0/Download/ (If you download files from the cloud or messengers).
• 📂 /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/Voice/ (on some Redmi models for voice notes).

If you recorded calls (not just voice notes), the files may be stored in:

• 📞 /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/call_rec/ (call-recording MIUI).
• 📞 /storage/emulated/0/CallRecordings/ (If you use an app like Cube Call Recorder).

5. How to change the default location of the records

If you don’t like the standard folder or want to save files to the SD-map, you can change the path:

Open the Dictator app»|Press three points. → «Settings»|Select “Conservation folder»|Indicate a new path (internal memory or a new path) SD-map)|Restart the application-->

On some models (Redmi Note 10 Pro, Redmi K40) the option is hidden to unlock it:

1. Install a root Explorer (such as FX File Explorer).
2. Move to the /data/data/com.miui.soundrecorder/shared_prefs/.
3. Open the file. com.miui.soundrecorder_preferences.xml and find a line. <string name="save_path">.
4. Change the path to the path you want (e.g. /storage/emulated/0/Download/MyRecords/).

⚠️ Note: Editing system files without root rights can cause an application to crash. We recommend using this method only if standard settings are not available.

An alternative way is to use Tasker or Automate to automatically transfer files from a standard folder to the desired directory after each entry.

6.Recovery of deleted recordings of the recorder

If you accidentally delete a record, you can try to restore it, and the odds depend on how long it took and whether the device was used after it was deleted.

Recovery methods:

1. Through MIUI Recycle Bin: Open Files → Recycle Bin. Find deleted audio files (they are stored there for 15 days), select the ones you need and click Restore.
2. Using PC: Connect Redmi to your computer in file transfer mode (MTP). Use Recuva, EaseUS Data Recovery or DiskDigger to scan internal memory. Look for files with extensions.m4a,.mp3,.amr.

Through the Mi Cloud backup:

• Go to Settings → Xiaomi Account → Mi Cloud → Backup.
• Check if there is a Recorder folder in the archive.

This will free up space in the cloud and speed up the recorder (as it won’t wait for the download to complete).
