Accidentally deleting an important video file on a Xiaomi smartphone is a stressful situation that many users face. Often we don't even notice the finger slipping, and the valuable moment goes into oblivion with the clearing of the clipboard. However, it's too early to panic: the Android file system is designed in such a way that data does not disappear instantly and irrevocably.
Recovery of deleted videos from Xiaomi's phone is possible if you act quickly and competently. It's important to understand that the success of the operation depends on how long it has been since the loss and whether the synchronization has been used. The less new information is recorded in the device's memory, the better the chances of content returning.
In this article, we will take a look at all the available methods, from built-in MIUI functions to professional PC software, where to look for “digital traces” of your records and how to properly use specialized utilities to scan internal memory.
Check the built-in basket in the MIUI Gallery
The first place that a Xiaomi or Redmi smartphone owner needs to look after a missing person is the system folder, recently deleted. The developers of the MIUI shell have provided a security mechanism that stores deleted media files for 30 days before they are permanently erased, a buffer zone that allows you to easily fix user error without connecting complex tools.
To access this repository, you just have to open the standard Gallery app, and you have to find the Albums tab in the interface, and scroll down to the bottom, and that's where the system folder usually hides, often with a basket icon or a clock that symbolizes temporary storage.
If you find the file you want, just select it and click the Recover button. The video will return to its original album, but it's worth remembering that if more than a month has passed since deleting or the phone's memory was full, the system could automatically clear the cache.
⚠️ Note: File storage period in the basket MIUI This is strictly limited to 30 days, and once this period has expired, manual recovery through the standard interface becomes impossible.
Sometimes users will clear the bin themselves, thinking they are vacating space, but in fact they are depriving themselves of a last chance for an easy data return. Always check the contents of this folder before performing any other manipulation of the file system.
Using the Xiaomi Cloud Service
The second layer of data protection is the Xiaomi Cloud service, which means that if you have activated gallery sync on your device, copies of the video can be automatically downloaded to the company’s servers before they are deleted from the phone, which is one of the most reliable ways, since the data is stored remotely and does not depend on the physical state of the smartphone’s memory.
To check, go to the Mi Account settings. In the section responsible for cloud services, you should find the "Gallery" item and make sure that the sync switch was active, then go to the official cloud storage website via the browser on your computer or phone.
Log in using your Mi Account. Search the web version for photos and videos. Often deleted files remain available in the cloud for a while or move to a separate shopping cart within the cloud itself.
- 🌐 Open your browser and go to i.mi.com.
- 🔑 Enter the login and password from your Mi Account.
- 📂 Select the "Gallery" or "Photos" section".
- ↩️ Find the right video and click the restore or download button.
It is important to note that free cloud storage is limited (usually 5 GB), and if the limit is exhausted, new video sync may not be possible, leaving only old files in the cloud, and then you will have to look for other methods.
What to do if the synchronization is disabled?
Recovery via Google Photos and other clouds
Many Android users default to Google Photos for backup. Even if you are a Xiaomi owner, this service is often pre-installed and can run in the background. Deleting a file from your phone doesn’t always mean removing it from the Google cloud, especially if Autoboot and Sync is enabled.
Go to the Google Photos app or photos.google.com. Check the Library -> Recycle Bin. As with MIUI, Google stores deleted objects for 60 days (for Google One subscribers) or 30 days (for regular users), which is a lot of recovery.
Besides the Google and Xiaomi ecosystems, it’s worth checking other installed cloud storage, such as Dropbox, Yandex.Disk or OneDrive. If you had set up automatic camera saving in these applications, the video could get there. The algorithm is everywhere similar: login to your account, search for the Recycle Bin folder or Recently deleted.
Google Photos is a smart search feature, and even if you don't remember the exact date, you can try typing keywords like "video," "last summer," or the location name if it's added to the metadata.
Analysis of backups on PC and external media
Regular backups are the gold standard of digital hygiene, and if you’re used to connecting your phone to your computer to transfer files, or using Mi PC Suite (or its modern counterparts), the video you’re looking for may be on your PC’s hard drive.
Check the folders that normally copy content from your phone. Often users create folder structures by date or event, and it's also worth checking the history of recently modified files on your computer by sorting them by date corresponding to the period of video shooting.
☑️ Checking local backups
If you've used a microSD card, the situation is simplified: Take the card out of your phone, paste it into the card reader, and connect it to your computer. Run a drive check for hidden or corrupt files that may have been tagged as deleted but physically remain on the media.
You can use specialized software to recover from a memory card or internal storage (if you have root rights), but there are limited options for working with internal memory without root rights, since modern versions of Android encrypt data.
⚠️ Note: When connecting the phone to the computer in the "File Transfer" mode" (MTP) Data recovery programs often don't see internal memory as a separate disk. For deep scanning, internal storage must be defined as a removable medium, which is only possible with root access.
Specialized software for data recovery
When embedded tools and clouds fail, heavy artillery, deep memory scanning software, comes into play, and the leaders in this niche are Dr.Fone, DiskDigger, Recuva (for memory cards) and PhoneRescue, which are not looking for the files themselves, but for their tails in the filesheet.
Most programs work in the same way: they scan sector by sector, trying to find file headers of known formats (e.g., mp4,.mov), and if the sector has not been overwritten with new information, the program will be able to reassemble the file.
It's important to understand the difference between modes of operation: Basic scanning is available without superuser rights and only finds cached thumbnails or recently deleted files. Full scanning requires root rights, which can void the device warranty.
| Programme | I need a Root. | Support for video | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| DiskDigger (Android) | Preferably. | Tall. | Low. |
| Dr.Fone (PC/Mac) | Depends on the model. | Medium | Medium |
| Recuva (PC) | No (for cards) | Tall. | Low. |
| PhoneRescue | Yes, for deep. | Tall. | Tall. |
The recovery process usually takes 10 minutes to several hours, depending on the amount of memory, and after scanning, the program will show you a list of what it found, and it is critical to save the recovered files to a computer or external drive, rather than back to the same phone so that you don't overwrite the data.
Prevention of data loss and security setting
So in the future, you don't have to worry about how to recover video, you need to set up automatic data protection, and the best way to do that is to have three copies: the original on your phone, the cloud copy, and the copy on an external medium or computer.
In MIUI settings, you can activate advanced synchronization. Go to Settings → Mi Account → Xiaomi Cloud → Gallery and make sure the switch is active. It is also recommended to configure Wi-Fi for synchronization so as not to waste mobile traffic.
Make regular full backups to your computer. Connect your phone on a USB cable once a week and copy the DCIM/Camera folder to your hard drive. It takes a couple of minutes, but it will save you memories in the event of a critical system failure or device theft.
💡
Use the "Memory Cleanup" function in the Security app with caution. Before starting the cleanup, always check which files are marked for deletion so that you do not accidentally erase important videos that the system considers "junk".
It’s also worth considering installing an additional backup app, such as from a third-party developer, that will duplicate new videos immediately after shooting in cloud storage.
💡
Timely setting up automatic synchronization in the cloud is the only 100% way to guarantee data safety, since software recovery from crowded memory does not always give results.
