Accidental deletion of important images is a stressful situation familiar to many smartphone owners. Often users notice data loss too late when the gallery is empty and the device’s memory may already be overwritten with new files. However, it’s too early to panic: the Android operating system and Xiaomi cloud services leave several ways to save your digital memory.
In this article, we will discuss the current methods for returning images, ranging from built-in system tools to the use of specialized software. The effectiveness of recovery depends on how much time has passed since the deletion and whether data synchronization has been used before.
Before we take action, we need to understand how the file system works: a deleted file doesn't disappear instantly, it's only marked as available for recording new information, and it's this time gap that gives us a chance to recover what we lost.
Checking folders Recently deleted
The easiest and often ignored way is the standard Recycle Bin in the gallery, where the MIUI and the new HyperOS wrappers don't erase the deleted photos permanently, but instead move them to a buffer where they store a certain amount of time.
Typically, the storage period is 30 days, but in some versions of firmware it can be as long as 60 days or even longer if cloud sync is enabled, a buffer zone that developers have created specifically for this kind of event.
To find your photos, open the Gallery app and go to the Album tab. Scroll down to the bottom of the list, where the Recently Deleted section is located. Here you will see all the images deleted over the last period.
Pick the files you want, click Restore, and they'll go back to their original albums, and if the folder is empty or the photo isn't there, you'll have to move on to more sophisticated methods.
⚠️ Note: If you manually clean the “Recently Deleted” folder or the 30-day deadline expires, the files will be permanently destroyed from sync servers and will no longer be accessible by standard methods.
💡
Turn on the display of hidden albums in the gallery settings to make sure that the basket folder is not hidden by the space saving system.
Recovery through Mi Cloud
Xiaomi account holders have access to their own cloud storage, which often automatically syncs the gallery, and even if the photo is removed from the phone, a copy of it can be stored on the company’s servers for a long time.
To check, go to the official i.mi.com website via a browser on your computer or other device. Sign in using your Mi Account and the password you entered on your smartphone.
Once you log in to the cloud interface, select the Gallery section, which shows all the images that have been uploaded to the cloud, and users often forget that they have autosynchronization enabled, and they find the missing photos here.
- 📸 Go to the Gallery section on the Mi Cloud web portal.
- ⏳ Check the “Recently Deleted” folder inside the cloud web interface.
- 💾 Select the desired images and press the restore button.
Syncing can take time if you have a weak Internet connection, so wait a few minutes after you log in, and if the photo was deleted and from the cloud more than 30 days ago, you can’t recover it this way.
Use Google Photos and other clouds
Many Android users use Google Photos by default, a powerful tool that often runs in the background, even if you don't know it, and checking out the service is a must.
Open the Google Photos app or go to photos.google.com. Log in under the same Google account that was tied to your Xiaomi smartphone.
In the menu on the left or bottom, look for the Library section and then the Recycle Bin. Files are stored for up to 60 days if they are photos, or up to 30 days if they are screenshots or images from other apps.
Also, check other popular services like Dropbox, OneDrive or Yandex.Disk if they were installed on a device. Often social media programs like Telegram or WhatsApp also create their own copies of media files.
Hidden folders of messengers
If you find the image you want in the Google Recycle Bin, select it and select Restore. The photo will return to the main feed and device memory if sync is active.
Analysis of local files and hidden copies
Some apps create temporary copies or thumbnails that remain in the phone’s memory even after the original is deleted, and this is especially true for social networks and instant messengers.
Using the built-in Explorer or third-party file manager, go to the root folder of the device. Pay attention to the directories DCIM, Pictures and Android/data.
Cached images can be stored inside folders of specific applications (such as Instagram or Viber), and while their quality may be lower than the original, it is often better than a total loss.
It's also worth checking the.thumbnails folder inside DCIM. This is a system folder that stores reduced copies of all photos for quick gallery loading. The files here have the.jpg extension, but their names are made up of hash sums.
| Location. | Type of file | Probability of success |
|---|---|---|
| DCIM/.thumbnails | Miniatures. | Tall. |
| Android/media | Cashy social media | Medium |
| MIUI/Gallery/cloud/cache | Cloud cache | Low. |
☑️ Search for hidden copies
Using PC software for deep scanning
If standard methods don't work, you can use specialized software on your computer. Programs like Dr.Fone, Tenorshare UltData, or free Recuva (when you connect your phone as a drive) can do deep scanning.
Most of these utensils require USB debugging mode enabled to work. To activate it, go to Settings → About Phone and press the MIUI build number seven times until the message “You’re a developer” appears.
Then, in the Additional → For developers menu, activate the Debugging by USB. Connect your smartphone to your PC via a quality cable and start a recovery program.
⚠️ Note: Most programs require Root rights to scan internal memory deeply, and obtaining these rights voids the warranty and may result in the loss of all data if the process fails.
The scanning process can take anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours depending on the amount of memory, and once completed, the program will show you a list of the files found that are available for recovery.
💡
The less you use your phone after deleting the photo, the better the chances of reenactors finding the undamaged data.
Prevention and backup
The best way to combat data loss is to back it up regularly, setting up automatic syncs will take a couple of minutes, but will save your memories in the future.
It is recommended to use a combined approach: cloud synchronization for important photos and periodic copying of the entire data array to an external hard drive or computer.
In MIUI settings, you can set the automatic backup schedule. Go to Settings → Advanced Settings → Reservation and Restore.
- ☁️ Set up autosynchronization in Mi Cloud or Google Photos.
- 💻 Copy the folder once a month. DCIM computer.
- 📲 Use third-party backup apps like Syncthing.
Remember to check the health of backups by periodically opening files from the archive. A broken archive is worse than no archive at all.
