Accidental photo deletion is one of the most common and painful problems for smartphone owners: You could just swipe your finger in the wrong direction, clear your memory in a hurry, or face a software failure of the MIUI system. At this point, it seems that valuable photos are lost forever, but it is far from it.
Modern Android operating systems, which are equipped with devices Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco, have built-in mechanisms of data protection. Often information does not disappear forever, but only disappears from the user’s eyes or moves to a special buffer. Understanding how the file system works will help to recover what is lost.
In this guide, we will look at all the current recovery methods, from standard shell tools to the use of specialized software on your computer, the main thing is to act quickly and consistently so that you do not overwrite memory sectors with new data.
Checking the cart in the gallery and cloud Mi Cloud
The first step should always be to check the built-in Recycle Bin feature, which in the MIUI shell and the new HyperOS, deleted images are not erased instantly, but are moved to a special album where they are stored for 30 days, a kind of security buffer that gives you time to think.
To access this feature, open the Gallery app and go to the Albums tab. Scroll down to the bottom where you find the Deleted folder. This is where all the media you manually removed is stored. If you can't see this folder, it may be hidden or the sync function has been disabled before.
It's important to note that the bin is limited, so if you deleted a huge amount of heavy videos, the system could automatically clean the old files to make room, so you don't have to delay the check.
- 📸 Open the Gallery app on the home screen.
- 📂 Go to the bottom tab of "Albums" and scroll down.
- 🗑️ Find the Remote folder (sometimes called the Recycle Bin»).
- ↩️ Select the desired photo and click "Restore».
The Mi Cloud service deserves special attention. If you had gallery sync enabled on your device, copies of photos could be saved on the company's servers even after being deleted from the phone itself. Go to the Mi Account settings and check the cloud storage partition through the browser on your computer.
⚠️ Note: Files in the basket are automatically deleted after 30 days. After this period, it is impossible to restore them using standard methods.
💡
Enable sync with Mi Cloud right now, even if photos have already been deleted – this can help restore folder structure when resetting settings in the future.
Use of Google Photos and Backups
Many users ignore the standard Google Photos app, and it is in vain. On most Xiaomi smartphones, it is installed by default and often has an activated “Outload” feature, which means that your photos could be saved to your Google account unnoticed.
Check the Library -> Recycle Bin folder inside the Google Photos app. Remote objects here are stored for 60 days, which is significantly longer than a standard Xiaomi gallery, which gives you an extra chance to save important moments.
It's also worth checking your sync settings. Sometimes photos are deleted from your device to free up space, but they stay in the Google cloud. Go to the app's settings and make sure that the sync status is active.
- ☁️ Launch the Google Photos app (Color Windmill icon).
- 🔍 Click on the profile avatar and select “Photo on the device».
- ♻️ Check the “Basket” section in the Library menu».
- ✅ Select a photo and click "Restore».
If you’ve used other cloud services, such as Yandex.Disk or Dropbox, be sure to check them too. Often social media apps (Telegram, WhatsApp, Viber) also back up media files in their folders, which can be found through the file manager.

Analysis of messengers and app cache
Often the original photo may be lost, but the copy remains in messengers. If you sent this image to someone on WhatsApp, Telegram or Viber, it is saved in chat, and it is a simple but effective way to return the picture, albeit in a compressed format.
In modern versions of Android, messenger files are stored in specific directories, the path to them can be hidden from normal viewing. You will need a file manager with access to system folders, for example, MIUI File Manager or Total Commander.
Look at the Android/media or Android/data folders, and they have the directories of the installed applications inside them, and find the folder of the messenger you want, and look for the Images or Media subfolders.
⚠️ Attention: In Android 11 and above file access Android/data Limited. Viewing files may require a third-party file manager with extended rights.
And social media cache, too, because if you've uploaded a photo to a story or a wall, a draft or a downloaded version can stay in the app's memory for a while, but extracting data from the cache is a complex process that requires root rights or special tools.
Recovery through computer and software
If software methods fail, heavy artillery comes to the rescue, a specialized software for the PC, programs like Dr.Fone, DiskDigger (PC version) or Recuva are able to conduct deep scans of the device's memory.
To work with these utilities, you need to enable USB debugging on your phone, and this is done in a hidden developer menu, without this permission, the computer will not be able to access the file system at a low level.
How to enable debugging by USB
The process of recovery is like this: you plug your smartphone in with a cable, run a scan, wait for results, it looks for traces of deleted files, and the less you use your phone after deleting, the better the chance of success.
| Programme | I need a Root. | Type of scan | Efficiency |
|---|---|---|---|
| DiskDigger | No (basic) | Superficial | Medium |
| Dr.Fone | Yes (for deep) | Deep. | Tall. |
| Recuva | No (card mode) | Standard. | Low. |
| Undeleter | Yes. | Complete. | Tall. |
It's important to understand that no program gives you a 100% guarantee, and if the memory sector has been overwritten with new data, the photo will disappear physically, so once you find a loss, stop downloading files or shooting new videos.
Search for hidden and protected files
Sometimes users hide their photos without ever having to remember it, and MIUI has a Hidden Album feature that is accessed through a special gesture in the Gallery app, and see if your images have been accidentally taken.
To open a hidden album, open the Gallery, go to the Albums tab, and pull the album list down until the lock icon appears. The system will ask you to enter the password or fingerprint you set earlier.
Files can also be hidden through a file manager. Some applications allow you to label files as hidden by adding a dot before the file name (e.g..image.jpg).
- 🔒 Open the Gallery and pull down the album list.
- 👁️ Enter a password or use biometrics to log in.
- 📂 Check if you have the right files in the hidden section.
- ⚙️ In the file manager, enable the display of hidden files in the settings.
Preventing Data Loss in the Future
The best way to recover is to back up regularly. Don't rely on luck. Set up automatic sync with Google Photos or Mi Cloud right now while you're holding your phone.
Use external drives. Periodically upload the photo archive to your computer or external hard drive. Rule 3-2-1 says three copies of data, on two different media, one of which is elsewhere.
Be careful with memory cleaners. Popular applications like Clean Master or built-in optimizers can aggressively remove cache and thumbnails, considering them garbage.
⚠️ Warning: Do not install recovery apps directly on the same memory you need to save. USB-accumulator.
The best chance of getting a photo back is in the first hours after deleting it, until the system indexes and records new data on top of old sectors.
💡
Regular synchronization with the cloud is the only way to guarantee data retention in case of a smartphone breakdown or loss.
