Why recordings of conversations can "disappear" and where to look
Did you have an important phone conversation, turn on the record, but now you can't find the file? Or accidentally deleted the audio and need to recover urgently? Xiaomi smartphones based on MIUI offer several ways to record calls, but it is not always obvious where these files are stored and how to find them. The problem is complicated by the fact that depending on the model (Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Xiaomi 13T, etc.) and the versions of the storage path firmware may differ.
In this article, we will look at all possible storage locations, from the standard Dictaphone application to hidden folders of the system, and also tell you how to recover deleted files if they are not already overwritten. MIUI 14 or more new versions where the logic of conservation has changed.
If you have used third-party recording apps (such as Cube Call Recorder or ACR), the search algorithm will be different โ read about this in a separate section.
Method 1: Standard Dictator app โ the first place to search
Most Xiaomi users don't even know that their phone has a built-in voice recorder with call recording function, which automatically saves audio files to a specific folder, but access to it is not always intuitive.
- ๐ฑ Open the Dictaphone app (a microphone icon on a blue background). If it's not on the home screen, search through App Search (swipe down on the desktop).
- ๐ Go to the Records or Calls tab (depending on version) MIUI). This is where all the saved conversations are displayed.
- ๐ If the recording is not visible, tap the icon. โฎ (three-point) โ Settings โ The save folder is the file path (usually). /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/call_rec/).
It's important (POCO F5, Redmi K60) Call records are kept separate from regular audio notes. If you can't see the Call tab, check the folder. /MIUI/voice_recorder/ through any file manager (e.g. Files by Google or embedded Files).
๐ก
If the record is not played, try copying the file to your computer and opening it through VLC Media Player โ sometimes codecs in MIUI work incorrectly.
Method 2: Search through File Manager โ Manual Method
If the Dictaphone app doesn't show the recording you want, or you've used another program, you'll have to search for files manually. Here are the exact ways MIUI can store audio conversations:
| Type of record | The path to files | File format |
|---|---|---|
| Standard call recording. | /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/call_rec/ | .m4a or.amr |
| Recording through Dictaphone | /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/ | .mp3 or.wav |
| Records of third-party applications | /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/[application package]/files/ | Depends on the program. |
| Hidden system records | /data/media/0/MIUI/voice_recorder/ (root) | .ogg or.3gp |
To open these folders:
- Run a file manager (such as Total Commander or Built Files).
- Enable the display of hidden files: โฎ โ Settings โ Show hidden files.
- Go down one of these paths. Record files usually have names of the kind. call_20260515_143022.m4a (date).
What to do if the MIUI folder is missing?
Critical information: in MIUI 14+, call records can be saved by default to the Mi Cloud (if sync is enabled). Check the web version of the cloud at https://i.mi.com in the Records section.
Method 3: Recover deleted records โ if the file is missing
Did you delete the record by accident? Don't despair -- you have a chance to get it back if the file hasn't been overwritten by the new data. Here are 3 working methods:
- ๐๏ธ Recycle Bin in File Manager: Open Files โ The basket and check if there's any remote audio in there. MIUI Files are stored in the cart for up to 30 days.
- ๐ Recovery Programs: Use DiskDigger, Recuva (on PC) or GT Recovery (for Android) Important: Do not write new files to your phone until you recover!
- โ๏ธ Cloud Backups: If you have automatic backup enabled in Google Drive or Mi Cloud, check the archives in the Backups section.
Warning: If you used memory card formatting or reset your phone to factory settings, the chances of recovery are close to zero, and only professional software like R-Studio (requires root rights) will help in such cases.
Method 4: Search for records from third-party applications (Cube ACR, Boldbeast, etc.)
If you installed special programs to record calls (such as Cube Call Recorder ACR, Boldbeast or Call Recorder by Lovekush), the search algorithm changes. These applications store files in their folders, which are often hidden from the user.
Here's how to find the records:
- Open the application that was recorded (for example, Cube ACR).
- Go to the Records or History section, and there should be a list of all the saved conversations.
- If the records are not displayed in the interface, check the application folder: /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.cubecallrecorder/files/or /storage/emulated/0/CallRecorder/
Attention! Some apps (e.g. Boldbeast) require root permissions to record calls on new versions of Android. If you are not recording, check the program settings and permissions in Settings โ Special Features โ Call Recording Apps.

Method 5: Search through MIUI system settings (for advanced)
In some versions of MIUI (especially on Xiaomi for the Chinese market), call records can be stored in system partitions that are not available without additional permissions.
- ๐ง Go to Settings. โ System applications โ Calls. โ Call recording. This might be a save folder option with a precise path.
- ๐ Use it. ADB (Android Debug Bridge to access hidden folders. Connect your phone to your PC and execute the command: adb shell ls /data/media/0/MIUI/voice_recorder/ (Developer Mode and Debugging Required USB).
- ๐ Check the call log: sometimes the records are tied to specific contacts. Open the phone. โ Journal โ [Choose a contact] โ Record badge.
โ ๏ธ Note: Modifying system files through ADB If you are not sure about your actions, you should contact the Xiaomi service center.
