Why you can’t see the recording of a conversation on Xiaomi and where to look for it
You had a big phone call, you turned on the record — and now you can't find the file in your smartphone memory? This problem is familiar to many owners of Xiaomi, Redmi, Poco and Black Shark. The fact that the MIUI system stores audio recordings not in the standard downloads or music folder, but in hidden directories, access to which depends on the firmware version and device model.
Moreover, since MIUI 12, Xiaomi has tightened its privacy policy: by default, call records can be automatically deleted after 30 days if you don’t change your settings. In some regions (e.g., the EU), the recording feature is completely disabled due to legal restrictions. Before searching for a file, make sure that the record is saved at all, as we will discuss below.
Method 1: Standard record storage in MIUI
If you used a built-in voice recorder or call recording feature in the Phone app, the files must be in one of these folders:
- 📁 /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/call_rec/ — call-recording (MIUI 10–14)
- 📁 /storage/emulated/0/Recordings/Call/ — Alternative path in new versions
- 📁 /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.android.providers.media/files/ — If the recording was made via Google Drive
To open these folders:
- Launch the Explorer (the Files app).
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner → “Show hidden files”.
- Then, follow the path and follow the path.
Check the recording settings in the "Phone" application"|Make sure that the recording icon is active during the conversation.|Try searching for the file through your computer (plug the phone over the phone). USB)|Check out cloud services (Google Drive, Mi Cloud)-->
If the folder call_rec If it's missing, it means that the record is either not saved, or your Xiaomi model uses a different path. F5 files may lie in /storage/emulated/0/CallRecords/.
Method 2: Search through the Phone App
In the latest versions of MIUI, the call records are integrated directly into the call log to find them:
- Open the phone application (pipe icon).
- Go to the tab "Journal".
- Find the right contact or number → tap on the recording of the conversation.
- If the conversation was recorded, an icon will appear on the right. 🎤 Or it says "Record." Press it.
Note that on some models (e.g. Redmi Note 12 Pro+), this feature only works for incoming calls, and outgoing conversations may not be saved unless you manually activate the recording before the call starts.

Method 3: Verifying Cloud Services
If you're logged in to Mi Account or Google, the records could automatically sync to the cloud.
- 🌥️ Mi Cloud: Go to Settings» → «Mi Account» → «Mi Cloud» → «Call records».
- 🌥️ Google Drive: Open the app → «Menus» → «Backup copies» → «Call records».
- 🌥️ Yandex.Disk or Mail.ru Cloud, if you configured autoboot.
Important: Mi Cloud only stores records for 30 days unless you include extended storage (paid). In Google Drive, files can take up space in your cloud storage - check if they are deleted due to lack of space.
💡
If you record calls often, set up automatic cloud upload. Go to Settings → Apps → Phone → Record calls → Autoboot and select service.
Method 4: Search through a computer (if the phone doesn't show files)
Sometimes Xiaomi Explorer doesn’t display hidden files, even if you turn on the option, in which case, connect your phone to your PC or Mac via USB and follow these steps:
- Select file transfer mode (MTP or File Manager).
- Open Windows Explorer or Finder (on Mac).
- Go to the phone folder. → Internal storage (internal memory).
- In the search bar, type.amr or.mp3, which are the formats in which call records are saved.
If the search didn’t yield results, try using third-party utilities to restore files, such as:
- 🛠️ Recuva (Windows)
- 🛠️ DiskDigger (Android)
- 🛠️ EaseUS MobiSaver (Mac/Windows)

Method 5: Verifying Third-Party Applications for Recording
If you used third-party programs (such as Cube Call Recorder, ACR or Boldbeast) instead of a standard Xiaomi voice recorder, the records can be stored in their own folders:
| Annex | The path to the records | File format |
|---|---|---|
| Cube Call Recorder | /CubeBackup/ or /CallRecorder/ | .mp3, .ogg |
| ACR (Another Call Recorder) | /ACR/ or /CallRecordings/ | .amr, .mp4 |
| Boldbeast | /Boldbeast/ or /BBRecordings/ | .mp3, .wav |
| Google Drive (auto-recording) | /Android/data/com.google.android.apps.docs/files/ | .mp3, .m4a |
If you don’t remember which app you used, check the installed list in Settings → Apps → Application Management. Sort by installation date – most likely, the recorder was installed recently.
Why Call Records May Not Be Available
If you are sure you have included the recording but the file is not found, the reasons may be as follows:
- ⚠️ Legal restrictions: in some countries (EU, India) recording calls is prohibited without the consent of the interlocutor.
- ⚠️ Memory Lack: If your phone has less than 10% of the available space, the system can automatically delete old records.
- ⚠️ Application failure: if during the conversation “Phone” or voice recorder closed emergency, the record will not remain.
- ⚠️ Privacy settings: in Settings → Confidentiality → Special permissions may be disabled access to microphone for recording application.
💡
Starting with MIUI 13, Xiaomi blocks the recording of calls through third-party apps without rooting permissions. If you use ACR or Cube Recorder, give them permission to access notifications in the security settings.
⚠️ Note: If you record calls for legal proceedings or business correspondence, make sure that this is permitted by the legislation of your country. In Russia, recording of a conversation without the consent of the interlocutor can only be used in court as circumstantial evidence (Article 138 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Russian Federation).

To avoid problems in the future, set up an automatic record of important conversations:

The Poco X5 Pro, Redmi K60 and later also have a “Notice of Record” option, which plays a voice message at the beginning of a call (“This call is being recorded”), which will help avoid legal problems.
💡
If you make frequent calls to other countries, turn off automatic recording for international numbers, and some carriers (such as AT&T in the US) block such calls.
