Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones sooner or later face a shortage of internal memory β especially if the device is equipped with only 32 or 64 GB of internal storage. The microSD card seems to be the obvious solution, but migrating files to it to MIUI often raises questions: why some applications do not move, how to properly configure the card as internal memory, and what to do if the system gives an error βNo spaceβ despite the free space.
In this article, we will discuss all the current ways to transfer data to the SD- card in Xiaomi smartphones, from standard tools MIUI to hidden functions and circumvention of restrictions. Particular attention will be paid to the unique problems of firmware MIUI 14/15, where the transfer of applications to the memory card is blocked by default, and also consider alternative solutions for models without a slot for microSD (for example, Xiaomi 13 Pro or POCO F5 Pro).
Preparation SD-Maps: Formatting and Selection of File System
Before transferring files, the memory card must be properly prepared. Xiaomi has two options for using the SD- card:
- π Portable storage β the card works as a removable drive (files are manually transferred, applications are not installed on it).
- π Internal memory β The card extends the main storage (applications can be ported, but the card cannot be retrieved without resetting).
For most tasks (photo, video, music) portable mode is enough. If you want to move applications, you will need to format as internal memory - but note that after that the card will not be read on other devices without formatting. In MIUI, this process is run through Settings β Memory β SD Map β Set up.
It is important to choose the right file system:
| File system | Max. File size. | Max. Map size. | Support for Xiaomi |
|---|---|---|---|
| FAT32 | 4GB | 32GB | Yeah, but file restrictions. |
| exFAT | 16 EB | 128 PB | Yes (recommended) |
| NTFS | 16 EB | 16 EB | Partially (requires root) |
For cards larger than 32 GB, MIUI automatically offers exFAT, which is the best choice. If the card is already formatted in NTFS (for example, for use in a camera), it will have to be reformatted, since Xiaomi does not support this file system for writing without root rights.
Method 1: Transfer files via the MIUI File Manager
The easiest method is to use the built-in File Manager, which allows you to move files without connecting to a PC or any additional applications.
- Open the Explorer app (the folder icon on the desktop).
- Go to the Internal Memory section and select the file folder (e.g. DCIM for photo or Download for downloads).
- Press and hold the file/folder, then tap on other elements for multiple selection.
- Click Move (Scissors icon) β select SD- card β specify the target folder.
If the option to move is inactive, check:
- β οΈ The card is connected as a portable storage (in internal memory mode, the transfer works differently).
- β οΈ Files are not protected from recording (e.g. screenshots or files of some applications).
- β οΈ There is enough space on the map (in MIUI it sometimes mistakenly shows "not enough memory," even if there is space).
The card is inserted and recognized by the system|Files are not used by other applications|There is enough free space on the map (at least 10% of the volume)|The guide is updated to the latest version-->
Some MIUI firmware (especially POCO) may have a "failed to move" error when transferring large files (>1 GB).
β οΈ Warning: If files are not transferred through Explorer, try copying them to a map and manually removing the originals. Also check if power saving mode is on, which can block background operations with files.
Method 2: Use the card as an internal memory (Adoptable Storage)
Adoptable Storage (MIUI called βInner Memoryβ) allows you to βcombineβ a SD- card with the main storage. This is the only way to transfer applications to the map in Xiaomi, but there are nuances:
- π The card is encrypted and linked to the device, and once extracted, the data will not be available.
- β‘ Application speeds from the card are lower than those from internal memory (depending on the SD- card class).
- π΅ Not all applications support portability (especially system-based and high-performance applications).
How to set up:
- Insert the card and wait for the alert βNew SD- card discoveredβ.
- Tap on the notification. β Choose Set Up β Internal memory.
- Confirm the formatting (all data will be deleted!).
- After the reboot, go to Settings β Applications β Application Management, select the application and click Move to SD- card (if the option is active).
Important limitations:
- π« On the class maps below A1/U1, applications will brake or fly out.
- π« Some apps (e.g. WhatsApp, Google Play Services) are not portable.
- π« In MIUI 14/15, the application port option may be hiddenβyou need to enable it through the Developer Settings (see next section).
How to check out the class SD-map?
Method 3: Transfer applications via Developer Settings (for MIUI 14/15)
In the newer versions of the MIUI (14 and higher), Xiaomi removed the ability to port applications to the SD- card from the standard menu, but it can be returned through the developer settings:
- Activate Developer Mode: Go to Settings β About Phone and tap the MIUI version 7 times.
- Back to Settings β Additionally. β For developers.
- Find the option to Forced Allow Applications to Move to SD (or similar) and enable it.
- Reset the device.
After that, the application management menu (Settings β Applications) will have the option to Move to SD- card.
- π§ Not all applications will be portable (depending on their code).
- π§ After updating MIUI tuning may reset.
- π§ Some models (POCO X5 Pro, Redmi Note 12 Pro+) may not have the option even in developer mode.
If you donβt have an option, try an alternative method:
adb shell pm set-install-location 2This command (executed via ADB on a PC) causes the system to default to install applications on the SD- card. To return the settings back, use:
adb shell pm set-install-location 0π‘
If the app crashes after transfer, try clearing its cache (Settings β Apps β [name] β Clear the cache). Also check if the battery saving mode for this application is turned on - it can block access to the SD- card.
Method 4: Automatic photo and video transfer (camera setting)
To make new photos and videos immediately saved to the SD- card, set up the Camera app:
- Open the camera and tap the βοΈ icon (settings).
- Select a Retention Site β Memory map.
- Confirm the change (some versions of MIUI will require a camera restart).
If there is no option:
- πΈ In MIUI 13/14 for some models (Xiaomi 12T, POCO F4 GT), saving on the SD- card is blocked by default.
- πΈ On dual SIM- card devices (where the slot is paired with SD), the option may be lost when the second SIM is activated.
Automatically transfer existing photos and videos:
- πΌοΈ Use Google Photos (set up a backup to SD-map via Settings β Backup).
- πΌοΈ In Gallery MIUI select the album β More β Move β Map SD.
π‘
Setting up photo/video saving on the SD- card in the Xiaomi camera is reset after the firmware update. Check this option after each MIUI update!
Method 5: Transfer files over PC (for large amounts of data)
If you need to move tens of gigabytes of data (like movies or backups), itβs easier to use your computer. Connect Xiaomi to your PC via the USB- cable and select File Transfer Mode (MTP) in the notification curtain.
Next:
- On a PC, open βThis Computerβ β the device will appear as a removable disk.
- Copy files from the Internal Storage folder to the SD Card folder.
- Use Total Commander or TeraCopy to speed up (they support restarting an interrupted copy).
Challenges and solutions:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| PC doesn't see SD-map | The card is connected as internal memory. | Format the card as a portable storage |
| Error "Device not recognized" | MTP drivers not installed | Install Mi PC Suite or Drivers Manually |
| Slow copying | USB 2.0 or Slow Card | Use USB 3.0 and a U3/A2 card |
If Xiaomi is not defined as MTP-, the device:
- π Try another USB- cable (original from Xiaomi or with data support).
- π Enable Debugging by USB in Settings β For Developers.
- π Some models (Redmi Note 11 Pro) require unlocking OEM- in the developer settings.
Solving errors when transferring files to the SD- card
Even after setting it up correctly, you can still get errors.
1. "Not enough space on the device" (with a free card)
Reason: MIUI reserves some of the memory for system needs.
- π οΈ Clear the app cache (Settings β Memory β Clear the cache).
- π οΈ Reboot the device β sometimes MIUI miscalculates the free space.
- π οΈ If the card is connected as internal memory, try formatting it again.
2. "File not supported" or "Impossible to move"
Reason: files are protected by DRM or used by the system.
- π Copy the file to the PC and then back to the map.
- π For multimedia (e.g., purchases from Google Play Movies), transfer is prohibited under license.
- π If these are application files (e.g., Android/obb), use Root Explorer with superuser rights.
3 Apps fly out after transfer to SD- card
Reason: slow read/write speed. Solutions:
- β‘ Check the card class β applications require a minimum of U1/A1.
- β‘ Move the application back to internal memory.
- β‘ Turn off battery optimization for this application (Settings β Battery β Battery Optimization).
β οΈ Warning: On devices with MIUI Global Stable (e.g., Redmi Note 10 Pro) notifications may be lost after transferring applications to the SD- card. This is a firmware bug β the solution is only a rollback to an earlier version or waiting for an update.
Alternative solutions for devices without a slot for SD- cards
Xiaomi premium models (Xiaomi 13 Ultra, Mix Fold 3) are often devoid of microSD slots.
1. Use the OTG- drive
Connect the flash drive via USB-C OTG- Adapter (supports drives up to 2 TB). In MIUI OTG- Discs are displayed in Explorer as removable devices. Minus - flash drive sticks out of the connector, which is inconvenient for permanent use.
2. Cloud storage with offline access
Set up automatic file downloads to Google Drive, Mi Cloud or Yandex Disk, and then turn on the option βAvailable offlineβ for the desired folders. This will not free up internal memory, but will remove the originals after synchronization.
3. Wireless storage devices
Devices like Xiaomi Mi WiFi Range Extender (with USB- port) or dedicated Wi-Fi drives (like SanDisk Connect) create their own network to connect to and download/download files, which is slower than the SD- card, but there are no limits on the size.
4. Replacement of internal drive (for advanced users)
On some models (POCO F3, Redmi K40) you can replace the internal memory with a more capacious one, but this requires:
- π οΈ Disassembly of the device (risk of losing warranty)
- π οΈ Rows of a new memory chip (experience and equipment required).
- π οΈ Firmware of the modified loader.
The cost of such an upgrade is often comparable to buying a new smartphone, so the method is justified only for enthusiasts.
π‘
For models without SD- cards, the best balance of price and convenience is the OTG- drive on the 128-256 GB (for example, SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive). It is more compact than wireless solutions and cheaper than internal memory replacement.
