Why Redmi 9 cache is clogging memory and how to fix it
Owners of Xiaomi Redmi 9 often face a problem: the smartphone begins to βbrakeβ, applications open for a long time, and in the storage settings suddenly appears the inscription βOccupied with system dataβ. The culprit is an accumulated cache that MIUI does not always clean automatically. Unlike flagship models, the budget Redmi 9 has only 64 or 128 GB of memory, and even 5-10 GB of βjunkβ files can critically affect performance.
Cache is a temporary file that creates apps and a system to make things faster, like Instagram saving thumbnails of photos, Google Maps storing offline maps, and the browser storing copies of pages visited, and the problem is that MIUI doesn't always manage this process correctly: some apps don't clear the cache for years, and the system can forget to delete outdated data, and as a result, after 1-2 years of using Redmi 9, it loses up to 30% of free space.
This article is not about the banal clicking βClear Cacheβ in the settings. We will analyze 5 ways β from standard to hidden MIUI functions that will help free up to 15-20 GB of memory (the real data of the tests on Redmi 9 with MIUI 12-14).
Method 1: Standard cache cleaning via MIUI settings
The safest method, which is suitable even for beginners, is to remove the cache of user applications only, without affecting system files. Importantly, this method does not clear the cache of Google Play Services and other system services - they need separate actions (see Method 3).
Instructions:
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Slip on the three dots in the upper right corner and select Sort by size.
- Scroll down the list β the apps with the largest cache (usually YouTube, Telegram, Chrome or games) will be in the top.
- Select the application β Storage β Clear the cache.
β οΈ Warning: Do not confuse Clear cache and Clear data! The second option will delete all the settings of the application (for example, logins in VKontakte or progress in games.
Close all background applications|Check the free space in memory|Backup of important data (optional)|Connect charging if the battery level is below 20%-->
This method will free up 1-3 GB, but it wonβt solve the problem completely, for example, the cache of system applications (Mi Video, Mi Browser) is not cleaned this way, they need superuser rights or the right to use it. ADB-commands (see Method 4).
Method 2: Deep Cleaning through Optimization (Hidden MIUI function)
MIUI has a built-in Optimization tool that can remove system debris, including residual files after updates, log files and cache of Google services, a feature hidden in new versions of MIUI, but it can be launched through a search or a special path.
How to open it:
- π Enter the settings in search (Settings) β Search) βOptimizationβ requestΒ».
- π± Or go along the way: Settings β The phone. β Version. MIUI (Tap 7 times to unlock Developer Mode, then return to Settings β Additionally. β Optimization.
In the Optimization section, select:
- π§Ή Deep Cleanup β Deletes the cache of system applications and temporary files MIUI.
- ποΈ Waste cleaning β Finds residual files after uninstalling programs.
- π Memory optimization β closes the background processes that can block the cleanup.
β οΈ Warning: After deep cleaning, Redmi 9 can reboot - that's OK.If the smartphone "hangs" on the logo MIUI longer than 5 minutes, force it to turn off (squeeze the power supply) + Volume up for 10 seconds).

Method 3: Clearing the cache of Google Play Services and other system applications
Google Play Services is one of the most voracious applications on Redmi 9, which can take up to 500 MB-1 GB of cache, but it canβt be cleaned by standard methods, as well as Mi Account, MiuiDaemon and other system services, which will require ADB (Android Debug Bridge) to clean them.
Instructions for Windows:
- Download Googleβs Platform Tools and unpack it into the C:\adb folder.
- Turn on Redmi 9 USB Debugging (Settings β About Phone β MIUI Version β 7 taps β Developer Settings β USB Debugging).
- Connect your phone to your PC, open the Command Prompt in the adb folder and type:
adb devices
adb shell pm clear com.google.android.gmsTo clear the cache of other system applications, replace com.google.android.gms with:
- π± com.xiaomi.account β Mi Account.
- π com.android.browser β Mi Browser.
- π΅ com.miui.player β Mi Music.
β οΈ Note: After cleaning up Google Play Services, Google services (such as geolocation or push notifications) may temporarily stop working. To restore functionality, restart your smartphone and wait for automatic service updates via Play Market.
What happens if you clear the cache of system applications?
Method 4: Manually clean the cache through the file manager (for experienced)
If the first three methods didnβt work, you can manually delete the cache through the root file manager or the built-in MIUI Explorer. This method is risky β an error can cause applications to crash, but it allows you to delete hidden cache files that are not visible in the settings.
How to manually clean:
- Open Explorer (standard MIUI application).
- Go to internal memory β Android β data.
- Find a folder with the app name (e.g. com.whatsapp for WhatsApp).
- Inside will be a cache folder - delete its contents.
β οΈ Note: Do not delete lib folders, databases or files with the.db extension - this will lead to loss of application data! Also do not touch the folders of system applications if you are not sure of their purpose (for example, com.android.systemui).
For convenience, use the safe folder cleaner table:
| Folder/file | Can I remove it? | What will be cleaned up |
|---|---|---|
| /data/data/<package>/cache | β Yes. | Temporary application files |
| /data/data/<package>/app_webview | β Yes. | Cache built-in browser (for example, for VK or Instagram) |
| /data/dalvik-cache | β No. | Dalvik system cache β deletion will cause failure |
| /cache (at the root of memory) | β οΈ Partially. | You can delete files with the.tmp or.log extension |
π‘
Before manually clearing the cache, create a restore point in TWRP (if a custom recap is installed) to help restore the system if you accidentally delete critical files.
Method 5: Automatically cleans the cache with third-party applications
If you're too lazy to manually clean the cache, you can use third-party utilities.
- π§Ή SD Maid β Finds and deletes cache, duplicate files and residual data after uninstallation.
- ποΈ Files by Google β a simple tool with the function βClean up garbageΒ».
- π CCleaner is a classic utility, but on MIUI may not see the system cache.
β οΈ Note: Some βoptimizersβ (e.g. Clean Master or Clean Master) DU Speed Booster can show false data about "junk" and suggest removing useful files. Redmi 9 is better to use SD Maid β it more accurately detects cache and does not delete system data.
How to set up automatic cleaning in SD Maid:
- Open the app and give it root (if any) or storage access.
- Go to the CorpseFinder section β it finds residual files after you delete the applications.
- Enable Auto Cleanup in your settings and set a schedule (e.g. once a week).
π‘
Side optimizers don't replace manual cleaning! They can't remove the cache of system applications (like Google Play Services) without root rights. Use them only for custom programs.
What if Redmi 9 is running slower after cleaning the cache?
And the paradox is that sometimes, after you clean the cache, the smartphone starts to slow down even more, because:
- π Applications have to recreate the cache, which loads the processor.
- π The system can redistribute memory if there is too much space.
- π§ Some services (such as Google Play Services) automatically restore cache in the background.
How to fix it:
- Reboot your smartphone β it will reset the temporary processes.
- Turn off automatic app updates in the Play Market for 1-2 days.
- Use CPU Overclocking in the developer settings (Settings β For developers β Windows animation: turn off).
If the brakes are not gone, check the processor boot:
- Install CPU Monitor from Play Market.
- If CPU load is consistently above 50%, the problem is not the cache, but the background processes (see section below).
How to prevent re-accumulation of cache on Redmi 9
To avoid clearing the cache every week, set up Redmi 9 to follow these rules:
- π΅ Limit background activity: Go to Settings β Battery β Power management applications. For voracious applications (e.g. Facebook, TikTok) select Limit background activity.
- π Turn off auto-update: In Play Market: Settings β Auto-update of applications β Never. In the Mi App Store: Settings β Auto-update β Only on Wi-Fi.
- ποΈ Use the Lite version of the apps: Replace Facebook with Facebook Lite, Messenger with Messenger Lite. Use YouTube Go instead of the standard YouTube to watch videos.
It is also useful to check the storage regularly:
- Once a month, open Settings β Storage and see which apps take up the most space.
- If an application βswellsβ to 500+ MB, clean its cache or reinstall it.
π‘
On the Redmi 9 with 64 GB of memory, it is optimal to hold 10-15% of free space. If it is free less than 5 GB, the performance will fall by 30-40% (data from tests on MIUI 13).
