Have you ever lost a photo on Xiaomi, even though you remember exactly what you took a picture? Or suspect someone hid files in a hidden album of your smartphone? There are several levels of media hiding in MIUI firmware, from the standard feature βHidden Albumsβ to system folders that do not appear in the gallery by default. This article will help you understand exactly where hidden photos are stored on Xiaomi, how to find them and why they may be lost to view.
The manufacturer does not advertise all the possibilities of hiding content, and some features (for example, Private Safe in older versions of MIUI) were removed altogether without replacement. We analyzed current methods for MIUI 12/13/14, including the Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Xiaomi 13T and others. Importantly, some of the hidden data can be encrypted β their recovery will require additional actions.
1.Standard Hidden Album in Xiaomi Gallery
The most obvious way to hide a photo is to use the galleryβs built-in feature, which works on all Xiaomi smartphones with MIUI 11 and newer, but the path to it has changed depending on the firmware version. Recent updates have simplified the algorithm, but many users still donβt know where to look.
To open the hidden album:
- Launch the Gallery app (flower icon).
- Slip along three horizontal lines in the lower right corner (menu).
- Select the Album item β Scroll down to the Hidden section.
- The system will ask for a password, fingerprint, or pattern lock (if you set it).
If the Hidden section is not on the menu, it means:
- πΉ You never hid a photo through a gallery.
- πΉ The function is disabled in the settings (see the next section).
- πΉ You have an outdated version. MIUI (11.0, where the hidden album was called Private Safe.

If you forget the password from the hidden album, you can reset it only through a full reset of your smartphone settings (all data will be deleted).
2.How to turn on the display of a hidden album if it is missing
Sometimes the Hidden section disappears from the gallery after the MIUI update or reset, and it's not a bug, it's just a feature that's disabled in the privacy settings to get it back:
Go to: Settings β Apps β Gallery β Permissions β Additional Permits β Access to Hidden Albums.
If the switch is active but the album is still not visible, try:
- Clear the cache of the gallery (Settings β Applications β Gallery β Storage β Clear the cache).
- Reboot the smartphone.
- Update the Gallery app via Google Play (if you have global firmware).
Attention! On some models (e.g. POCO F4), the hidden album may be called Secure Files and be located in the Gallery's main menu Tools section. Also check the.hidden folder through the file manager - sometimes files are duplicated there.
3.System Hidden Folders: Where Xiaomi Hidden Files from Users
MIUI creates several hidden directories where media files from certain applications automatically move (e.g., screenshots from Incognito Mode in the browser or photos from Telegram with Save to the Gallery disabled) These folders are not visible in the standard gallery, but can be accessed through the file manager.
Open Explorer (or install Solid Explorer from Google Play) and enable the display of hidden files:
- In Explorer, tap three points β Settings β turn on Show hidden files.
- Go to the root directory of internal memory (/storage/emulated/0/).
- Look for folders with a dot at the beginning of the title:.thumbnails β photo thumbnails (sometimes the originals remain)..hidden β hidden media files..nomedia β files excluded from the scanning gallery. MIUI/Extra β backups and temporary files.
Important: The Android/data/ folder contains an app cache, including hidden media from messengers. For example, photos from WhatsApp can be located in /Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/.Statuses.
What do I do if the folders are empty?
4.Private Safe (older versions of MIUI)
Before MIUI 12, Xiaomi smartphones had a Private Safe feature, a separate password-based storage where files could be moved from the gallery, and after the update, many users lost access to this data because the feature was removed without migrating.
If you have used Private Safe and canβt find files now:
- Check the /MIUI/PrivateSafe/ folder through the Explorer.
- Install the old APK Gallery app (versions 2.0-3.5) from a reliable source (e.g. APKMirror) and try to open the safe through it.
- Use Root Access to Retrieve Files from /data/system/private_safe/ (technical skills required).
β οΈ Attention! Private Safe files could have been encrypted with a link to your Mi Account. If you reset your smartphone without a backup, it's almost impossible to recover them.
| MIUI version | Name of function | The path to files | Do you need a password? |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIUI 9β11 | Private Safe | /MIUI/PrivateSafe/ | Yes. |
| MIUI 12β14 | Hidden albums | Inside the gallery database | Yes. |
| All versions. | System hidden folders | /storage/emulated/0/.hidden/ | No. |
| MIUI for POCO | Secure files | /MIUI/Gallery/cloud/private/ | Yes. |
5 How to hide photos on Xiaomi: alternative ways
If a standard hidden album doesnβt suit you, there are more reliable methods of hiding files:
- π Archiving with a password: use RAR or 7-Zip You can create a secure archive, and the file will not be displayed in the gallery, and you can open it only with the password.
- π Move to.nomedia folder: Create a folder with that name and move photos there β the gallery will ignore them.
- βοΈ Cloud Storage with Encryption: Google Photos (in the Archive) or Mega with Client Encryption.
- π Third-party applications: KeepSafe, Vaulty or 1Gallery (safe-deposit").

6. Recovery of deleted hidden photos
If the hidden photos are missing after resetting or updating, you can try to restore them. Note: the more you use your smartphone after deleting, the lower the chances of success.
- Stop recording new data: Do not install apps or take photos.
- Use specialized programs: DiskDigger (for Android) - scans internal memory. Recuva (for PC) - if you connect Xiaomi as a drive. PhotoRec (for power users) - works with raw data.
- Check backups: Google Photos (Batchbox or Archives) and Mi Cloud (if sync was enabled).
β οΈ Attention! Recovery programs require Root access for deep scanning. On modern Xiaomi, unlocking the bootloader erases all data! Before using such utilities, back up via adb backup:
adb backup -apk -obb -shared -all -f backup.ab7. Frequent mistakes and how to avoid them
Users often experience problems with hidden albums on Xiaomi, and here are the typical mistakes and solutions:
- β "Hidden album doesn't open after reset" β You did not link it to your Mi Account. You can only restore it through a backup copy.
- β "Photos disappear after update MIUI" β Check the folder. /MIUI/Gallery/cloud/private/old/ β Sometimes files are transferred there.
- β "I can't hide the video" β Xiaomi Gallery only hides photos by default. Use archived or third-party apps for video.
- β "Hidden files are visible through the PC" β This is normal: the concealment function only works in the gallery. MIUI. For complete confidentiality, encrypt the files.

Starting with MIUI 14, hidden albums are tied to a Xiaomi account, and you can transfer them over the cloud when you change your device, but only if you are logged in on both smartphones.
