Why the Downloads folder disappears on Redmi and where to look for it
Have you downloaded a photo from a messenger, a document from an email or an up-file from a browser but can’t find it on your phone? the Download folder on Xiaomi Redmi smartphones often “hide” due to the features of the MIUI shell. Unlike “pure” Android, where downloads are stored in one place, here files can be distributed to different directories – depending on the application, firmware version and even regional settings.
Complicating the problem is that MIUI is regularly updated, and the path to the folder can change. For example, in MIUI 12-13 downloads were saved by default to /storage/emulated/0/Download, and in MIUI 14+, some files are automatically sorted by type (images in Pictures, documents in Documents), and some applications (such as Telegram or WhatsApp) create their own download folders, which further confuses users.
In this article, we’ll look at all possible storage locations for uploaded files on Xiaomi Redmi, including hidden system paths, and learn how to customize file saving to your convenience. If you haven’t found a folder through a standard file manager, don’t worry: below you’ll learn how to access it through ADB, Windows Explorer, and even the command line.
Method 1: Standard path to the Downloads folder in MIUI
In 90% of cases, downloaded files are stored in one of two ways:
- 📁 /storage/emulated/0/Download — main folder for all downloads (browser, mail, messengers).
- 📁 /storage/emulated/0/Downloads — Alternative version (found on older versions) MIUI).
To open it up:
- Open the Files app (Blue folder icon).
- Go to the Device (or Internal Memory) tab.
- Scroll down and find the Download (or Downloads) folder.
If the folder is not in the visible list, try:
- 🔍 Enable the display of hidden files: click on the three dots in the upper right corner → «Settings» → «Show hidden files».
- 🔄 Update the list: Pull the screen down for an update or click on the update icon.
💡
If you connect your phone to your computer, the Download folder can appear as Downloads (in English) or Downloads (in English) – these are the same directory.
Method 2: Search through the MIUI file manager
If the folder is not displayed in the root directory, use the built-in search function:
- Open the Files app.
- Slip on the magnifying glass icon (🔍) top-of-screen.
- Enter Download or Download request (depending on the system language).
The system will show all the folders and files that contain this word in the title, and note that if you searched in Russian and the system is configured in English (or vice versa), the folder may not be found.
- 🌐 Check the system language: Settings → Additionally. → Language and input.
- 📌 Try both titles (Download and Download).
If the search didn't work, maybe the folder was moved or renamed, and then method 3 or 4 will help.

Method 3: Verifying alternative paths for different applications
Not all apps save files to the Download folder. Here's where to look for downloads from popular services:
| Annex | Storage folder | Example of a path |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome, Firefox, Edge | Download | /storage/emulated/0/Download |
| Telegram | Telegram or Telegram Documents | /storage/emulated/0/Telegram/Telegram Documents |
| WhatsApp Media | /storage/emulated/0/WhatsApp/Media | |
| Gmail, Outlook | Downloads or Attachments | /storage/emulated/0/Download/Attachments |
| Xiaomi Cloud | MiCloud or Xiaomi | /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/XiaomiCloud |
To quickly find the right folder:
- Open the Files» → «Categories».
- Select the file type (e.g., “Images”, “Documents”).
- Click on three dots next to the file → “Info” → look at the path in the Location section.

Method 4: Access via PC (if the phone is not visible as a drive)
If you connect Redmi to your computer, but the Download folder doesn't show up, the problem may be the connection settings. Here's how to fix it:
Enable debugging on USB (Settings → The phone. → Version. MIUI → 7 times to tap → Back to Settings → Additionally. → For developers → Debugging by USB)|Install Xiaomi drivers (download from the official website)|Select file transfer mode (when connecting swipe down and tap on the notification)|Unlock the phone screen (without unlocking access to files is limited)-->
After connection:
- Open “This Computer” (Windows) or “Finder” (Mac).
- Find the Redmi device in the list of connected drives.
- Go to the Internal Storage → Download folder.
If the folder is not:
- 🔌 Try another one. USB-cable (not all cables support data transmission).
- 🖥️ Update Xiaomi drivers on PC (download from the official website).
- 📱 Restart your phone and PC.
💡
If your computer can’t see your phone at all, check if File Transfer is enabled» (MTP) In the connection settings. On Redmi, it's done via swipe down the notification panel. → Tap on notification "Charging through" USB» → Selection of the “Transfer of files” mode».
Method 5: Search through ADB (for power users)
If standard methods don't work, you can use Android Debug Bridge (ADB), a tool for accessing system folders, which is suitable if:
- 🔒 Folder hidden or protected.
- 📱 The phone does not connect to the PC.
- 🔄 You want to reassign the download path.
Instructions:
- Enable debugging over USB (see checklist in method 4).
- Download Platform Tools from the Android site and unpack.
- Connect your phone to your PC and open the command prompt (cmd) in the ADB folder.
- Enter the command to search for Download folder: adb shell ls /storage/emulated/0/ | grep -i download
If the folder is found but not available, check the rights:
adb shell ls -la /storage/emulated/0/DownloadNote: on some MIUI firmware, the path to internal memory may be different. For example, on the Redmi Note 10 Pro with MIUI 13, downloads are sometimes stored in /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.android.providers.downloads/files.
adb pull /storage/emulated/0/Download C:\Users\YourName\Downloads(substitute C:\Users\YourName\Downloads on the right path on your computer).-->
Method 6: Restore the Remote Downloads folder
If the Download folder has been deleted or damaged, it can be restored:
- Open Files → Press + (Create a folder).
- Name a new folder Download (registration is important!).
- Reboot the phone.
If the system does not recognize the new folder as a place to download:
- 🔧 Set up file saving manually: In Chrome: ⋮ → Settings → Downloads. → The download folder: ⋮ → Settings → Data and memory → Download folder.
- 🔄 Reset the Files app settings: Settings → Annexes → Application management → Files. → Warehouse → Clear the data.
Note: If the folder was deleted along with the files, you can only restore them through specialized programs (for example, DiskDigger or Recuva), however, the chances of success depend on how much data was written to the phone after deleting.
💡
On Redmi with MIUI 14+, the Download folder can be automatically archived if not used for more than 30 days. Check the archive at /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/Backup/AllBackup.
How to Change the Default Location Save
To save new files to a folder convenient for you:
- Open "Settings» → «Warehouse».
- Select “Device Memory” → “Storage settings”.
- Click Download Folder and specify a new path (e.g. /storage/emulated/0/MyDownloads).
For individual applications:
- 🌐 Browsers: in the settings, find the section “Downloads” or “Downloading».
- 📧 Mail: Usually the attachment settings are in “Account Settings».
- 💬 Messengers: look for the option “Folder for media files».
If you do not have the right option, you can use the automatic sorting rule in the MIUI file manager:
- Open the Files» → «Categories».
- Tap on «⋮» → «Settings» → «Smart sorting».
- Turn on the option and select folders for different file types.
