Why Xiaomi files are lost and how to find them quickly
Have you downloaded an important document, photo or video, but can't find it in your phone's memory? This problem is familiar to many Xiaomi owners, especially after upgrading to MIUI 14/15. The fact is that the system automatically distributes downloads to different folders depending on the source: browser, messenger, mail or third-party application. In addition, starting with MIUI 12, Xiaomi hides some system directories from the user in the standard file manager, which complicates the search.
In this article, we will not only show you all the possible storage locations for downloaded files, but also teach you:
- ๐ Use built-in search by smartphone memory
- ๐ Enable the display of hidden folders in Xiaomi Files
- ๐ Transfer files between internal memory and SD-card
- ๐ ๏ธ Recover โlostโ downloads through your computer
We will focus on the differences between pure Android models (such as the Xiaomi A3) and MIUI devices, which have fundamentally different file storage algorithms, and why some files can disappear after restarting or clearing the cache.
Standard folders for downloads on Xiaomi
By default, all files downloaded through the browser or most applications fall into one of the three main directories, and their location depends on the firmware version and smartphone model:
| File type | The way to MIUI 14/15 | The path to MIUI 12 and older | The Way to Xiaomi with a Clean Android |
|---|---|---|---|
| From the browser (Chrome, Mi Browser) | /storage/emulated/0/Download | /sdcard/Download | /storage/emulated/0/Downloads |
| From messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp) | /storage/emulated/0/Android/media/... | /sdcard/Android/media/... | /storage/emulated/0/Android/media/... |
| From the mail (Gmail, Mi Mail) | /storage/emulated/0/Download/Attachments | /sdcard/Download/Attachments | /storage/emulated/0/Downloads/Attachments |
| System updates | /storage/emulated/0/Downloaded_rom | /sdcard/Downloaded_rom | No standard folder. |
Note that on newer versions of MIUI, the /sdcard path is replaced by /storage/emulated/0, but it's the same directory -- just different ways of displaying it. If you plug your smartphone into your computer, you'll see the sdcard folder.
โ ๏ธ Note: Some models (e.g. Redmi Note 12 Pro)+) Download folder can be hidden if you've never downloaded files through your browser. To make it appear, you just need to download any file once.
How to find downloads through the built-in file manager
The easiest way is to use the standard Files app (yellow folder icon) and open it and follow the instructions:
- On the home screen, select the Device tab (or Local Storage on older versions).
- Scroll down to the Category section and click Downloads.
- If there is no file, tap on the three dots in the upper right corner โ Show hidden files.
- To search by name, use the magnifying glass icon at the top.
If you use Google Files (a blue icon app), the algorithm is different:
- ๐ Open the tab Review
- ๐ Enter the file name in the search or select the Download category
- ๐ To access system folders, click Internal Memory โ Android โ data
โ๏ธ Search for files through Xiaomi Files"
On the POCO F5 and Xiaomi 13T models with MIUI 14, a new option has appeared in the file manager menu โ Recent. It shows all the files you accessed in the last 7 days, regardless of their location.
Where files from popular applications are stored
Each application on Xiaomi creates its own folder for downloads. Here are the most common options:
- ๐ฑ Telegram: /storage/emulated/0/Telegram/Telegram Documents or /.../Telegram Images
- ๐ฌ WhatsApp: /storage/emulated/0/WhatsApp/Media (Inside the WhatsApp Images subfolder, WhatsApp Video)
- ๐ง Gmail: /storage/emulated/0/Download/Attachments or directly to Download
- ๐ต Spotify: /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.spotify.music/files
- ๐บ YouTube: /storage/emulated/0/YouTube/Downloads (Only for Premium Users)
The files from Mi Community and Mi Video are stored in closed system folders:
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.xiaomi.channel/files
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.miui.video/filesโ ๏ธ Attention: Folders inside /Android/data/ They are only available through root access or when connected to a PC. Even Xiaomi's file manager won't show their content without special permissions.
How to access hidden application folders?
Searching for files via computer (for experienced users)
If the file is not located via a smartphone, connect Xiaomi to a PC or Mac.
- Use the original. USB-cable (cheap cables may not transmit data).
- On your phone, select File Transfer Mode (not Charging!).
- On Windows, open This Computer โ Find Xiaomi Device โ Go to Internal Memory.
- On a Mac, use Android File Transfer (download from Google website).
The advantage of this method is:
- ๐ฅ๏ธ All folders are visible, including hidden system folders
- ๐ You can search throughout the storage (including.nomedia files)
- ๐ค It is easier to transfer files of large sizes (video, backups)
If the computer can't see the phone:
- ๐ Check it out. USB-cable
- ๐ Reboot both devices
- ๐ฑ On the phone, turn on the debugging. USB In Settings โ The phone. โ Version. MIUI (tap 7 times) โ Additionally. โ For developers
- ๐ฅ๏ธ Install Mi drivers PC Suite from the official Xiaomi website
๐ก
If you often work with files on Xiaomi, install Mi Phone Manager on your PC. It not only shows all folders, but also allows you to manage SMS, contacts and backups directly from your computer.
What to do if files are โdisappearedโ after the MIUI update
After major updates (e.g., from MIUI 13 to MIUI 14), users often complain about missing downloads.
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Files are available but not displayed in the gallery | Created a.nomedia file in a folder | Delete.nomedia through the file manager |
| Download folder is empty | The storage path has changed (from /sdcard to /storage/emulated/0) | Check both directories or use a search by name |
| Files are missing after resetting settings | Cleaning internal memory | Restore from Mi Cloud backup or through DiskDigger |
| Documents are not opened. | App associations dumped | Set the program by default in Settings โ Applications โ By default |
If files are missing after clearing the cache (e.g., via Settings โ Storage โ Clean), try recovering them using:
- ๐ DiskDigger (Scans memory for deleted files)
- โ๏ธ Mi Cloud (if synchronization was enabled)
- ๐พ Recuva (when connected to a PC)
โ ๏ธ Attention: On Xiaomi models 12S Ultra and Redmi K60 Pro with the function "Extended memoryยป (RAM Expansion) files can be temporarily cached in RAM. After rebooting, they are automatically transferred to the drive, but in rare cases this process will fail. 10 minutes, check the folder. /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/Cache.
How to Change the Default Downloads Folder
If you don't like the standard file layout, you can change it.
For Chrome:
- Open the browser โ three points โ Settings
- Select Downloads โ Folder to download
- Specify a new path (e.g. /storage/emulated/0/MyDownloads)
For Mi Browser:
- Launch your browser โ โฎ โ Settings โ Additionally.
- Select the Downloads folder and specify the new directory
For Telegram:
- Open Settings โ Data and memory
- Select the Download Folder and change the path
On pure Android models (such as the Xiaomi A2 Lite), the default path changes through system settings:
Settings โ Storage โ Other settings โ Default download folder๐ก
Changing the download folder by default does not transfer files already downloaded โ only new ones will be saved in the new location.
