You searched your Xiaomi or Redmi for an album called "Personal" but couldn't find it in the gallery? This folder is one of the most mysterious features of MIUI that pops up and disappears for no apparent reason. Unlike standard albums (Camera, Screenshots, Downloads), "Personal" doesn't always appear in the main interface of the Gallery, although files in it continue to occupy space on the device.
In this article, weโll look at all the possible storage locations for the Personal album on Xiaomi smartphones, including hidden system folders, features of different versions of MIUI, and explain why it may disappear after updates or resets, and how to restore access to files if the album suddenly disappeared, and what applications can block its display.
Warning: the path to the folder depends on the firmware version, phone model and even regional settings, so we have prepared universal methods that work on most devices, from Xiaomi Mi 8 to Redmi Note 12.
What is a โPersonalโ album on Xiaomi and why you need it
The Private Album (in the English version of MIUI) is a secure storage for photos, videos and documents, which is by default hidden from prying eyes.
- ๐ Password/fingerprint protection: Access only after authentication.
- ๐ Separate Storage: Files are not displayed in the main gallery.
- ๐ Synchronization with Mi Cloud: Optional Backup.
- ๐ซ Screenshots blocked: you canโt take a screenshot inside the album.
Initially, the feature was intended for confidential data, but many users are faced with a problem: the album appears in the menu Gallery โ Albums, then disappears after the update MIUI. The reason lies in the changes in privacy policy and moving the folder to deep system directories.
For example, in MIUI 12/13, the album โPersonalโ could be in the โSecurityโ section, and in MIUI 14+ it was moved to โPrivacyโ, in addition, on some models (for example, POCO F4) it is not at all by default and requires activation through hidden settings.
Where to look for a personal album in the standard gallery MIUI
Before you go through the system folders, check the obvious locations. Depending on the MIUI version, the path to the album may vary:
- MIUI 14 and newer: Open Gallery โ Albums โ Scroll down. If there is a Personal album, it will be in the Private section (under lockdown).
- MIUI 12/13: Go to the gallery. โ Albums. โ Press three points (โฎ) โ Private albums, your folder may be hiding here.
- Old versions (MIUI 11 and below): Check Settings โ Privacy โ Personal Album. In some firmware, it is made separately.
If the album doesn't show up, try updating the gallery through Google Play or clearing its cache (Settings โ Apps โ Gallery โ Storage โ Clear cache). Sometimes this returns hidden folders.

On some models (such as the Redmi Note 10 Pro), the Personal album only appears after the first file is added to it. Try moving any photo there via the Share menu.
Hidden Paths to the Personal Album via File Manager
If you don't see the album in the gallery, you can find it manually through the system folders, using the built-in Files by Xiaomi or third-party managers (such as Solid Explorer).
| MIUI version | The way to the folder | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MIUI 14/13 | /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/PrivateAlbum/ | Requires permission to access hidden folders. |
| MIUI 12 | /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/.PrivateAlbum/ | The folder can be empty if the album is not activated. |
| MIUI 11 and below | /data/media/0/MIUI/Private/ | Access only with root rights. |
| POCO Launcher | /storage/emulated/0/Pictures/Private/ | Sometimes it is duplicated in DCIM. |
To see hidden folders (starting from a dot, such as.PrivateAlbum), enable the display of hidden files in Explorer:
- Open Files by Xiaomi.
- Press three lines (โฐ) top-left.
- Select Settings โ Show hidden files.
If the PrivateAlbum folder is empty but you are sure the files were there, check MIUI/Backup/Private/ - sometimes the system moves the data when updates are made.
What to do if the folder is password protected?
Why the album โPersonalโ disappears and how to get it back
The album may be missing for several reasons, and here are the most common ways to eliminate them:
- ๐ Update MIUI: After major updates (for example, with the MIUI 13 by 14) folder structure changes. Solution - check new paths from the table above.
- ๐ฑ Setting reset: When reset to factory settings, the album is deactivated. Solution - go to Settings โ Privacy โ Album "Personal" and turn it on again.
- ๐ Mi Account Block: If you logged out of Xiaomi, private data may be closed. Solution - log in again.
- ๐๏ธ Clearing gallery cache: Sometimes the cache contains the location of the album. The solution is to clear the gallery cache (see instructions above).
A critical feature of MIUI 14+ is that the album "Personal" can be completely deleted if you turn off the "Privacy" function in the security settings, in which case the files are not lost, but the folder becomes invisible even through the Explorer, to return it:
- Go to Settings โ Privacy โ Additional settings.
- Activate the "Private Album" switch.
- Reset the device.

If the album disappeared after the update, check your privacy settings first, rather than manually deleting files, which could result in them being lost.
