Where to look for personal photos on Xiaomi phone: 7 hidden storage places

You lost important photos on your Xiaomi smartphone and don't know where to look for them? Even if you deleted the photos from the main gallery, they could be saved in one of the hidden storages of MIUI or automatically uploaded to the cloud. In this article, we will analyze all possible places where your Redmi, POCO or Mi can store personal photos - from standard folders to system caches.

The manufacturer uses its own backup services, so photos are often duplicated in several places at once. For example, pictures from messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp) are stored separately from the main gallery, and the Private Safe feature in MIUI can hide files from prying eyes. We will show you how to find all these folders - even if you have never set them up manually.

1. Standard MIUI Gallery: Where all photos are stored by default

Xiaomi's main photo storage app is the Gallery app, which automatically sorts photos by album, date, and even facial recognition, but not everyone knows that the gallery displays not only photos from the phone's memory, but also:

• 📁 Local files – photos taken on the main camera (DCIM/Camera)
• ☁️ Cloud Albums – Photos from Mi Cloud, Google Photos, or other synchronized services
• 🔒 Hidden folders – if you have activated Private Safe

To see all the albums available, open the gallery and tap three horizontal lines in the upper right corner, and you'll see even folders that are usually hidden from quick access. You'll notice the Device section, which stores photos that are physically located in your phone's memory, as opposed to cloud-based copies.

If the gallery doesn't show fresh photos, try updating the media library: open Settings → Apps → Gallery → Storage → Clear cache. After rebooting the application, the pictures should appear.

Important: MIUI does not default to file files from folders with a dot at the beginning of the name (e.g..thumbnails). These folders contain thumbnails and cache, but sometimes the original deleted photos remain there. To see them, you will need a file manager (about this in the next section).

2. File Manager: manual search for photos by system folders

If you don't have photos in the gallery, you can find them through the standard Files by Google or the built-in MI File Manager.

Open the file manager and go to the "Internal Memory" section.

The MIUI Private Safe feature allows you to hide photos, videos and documents from outsiders, which are not displayed in the standard gallery or search-indexed, and to access them:

1. Open the Gallery app.
2. Flick down to the Albums section.
3. Put it on the "Personal Safe" icon.
4. Enter a password, fingerprint, or pattern lock (if configured).

If you have forgotten your Private Safe password, you can only restore access through your Mi Account (provided that the safe was linked to your account).

1. Go to Settings → Mi Account → Cloud → Personal Safe
2. Click "Restore Access."
3. Confirm the action via SMS or email.

Important: After resetting the files from the Personal Safe are deleted irrevocably – they can not be restored even through a PC. If you plan to sell or rent your phone for repair, be sure to transfer the hidden photos to another storage in advance.

4. Cloud Storage: Mi Cloud, Google Photos and more

Xiaomi automatically syncs photos with cloud services if this feature is enabled.

Note: If you delete a photo from the cloud, it may disappear from your phone the next time you sync. To avoid loss, turn off automatic sync in the Mi Cloud settings → Gallery → Autoboot.

5. Recycle bin and temporary files: how to recover deleted photos

If you accidentally delete photos, you can return them from the cart or through system tools. MIUI has two types of baskets:

1. Gallery basket - stores deleted photos for 30 days (path: Gallery → Recycle Bin).
2. File Manager Recycle Bin - Stores all deleted files for 10 days (path: Files → Recycle Bin).

To recover the photo:

1. Open the Gallery → go to the Cart.
2. Select the desired files with a long tap.
3. Press "Restore" (the icon with the arrow up).

If the cart is empty, try using the built-in recovery:

1. Open Settings → Memory → Cleaning.
2. Select "Deep Cleanse" → "File Recovery".

Recovery works only if the place where the photos were stored has not been overwritten with new data. After deleting, do not install applications or take new pictures - this reduces the chances of success.

4. Copy the photos you want to see in DCIM/Camera so they can be displayed in the gallery.

7. Backups and third-party applications

If you use third-party backup apps (e.g. Titanium Backup, Swift Backup), the photos may have been saved in their archives.

1. Open the file manager and find the application folder (e.g. SwiftBackup).
2. Check files with the.zip or.tar extensions, which may contain photo archives.
3. Remove the archive with RAR or 7-Zip (on PC).
