Have you plugged a flash drive into a Xiaomi phone but can't find it? Or does your smartphone not respond to an external drive at all? This problem is familiar to many brand users, especially after MIUI updates or when you first connect. Unlike older Android devices where the flash drive was displayed right in the root directory, modern Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO hide it in non-obvious sections.
In this article, we'll look at all the possible places your flash drive might be hiding, from the standard file manager to the system settings, and explain why the phone sometimes doesn't see the drive, and how to fix it without resetting to factory settings. OTG-adapter or microSD card, the instructions below are suitable for both cases.
1. Standard method: MIUI file manager
The first place to look for a flash drive is Xiaomi's built-in file manager, which is simply called Files and is usually installed by default. The app icon looks like a blue folder with a white tick. If you deleted it or can't find it, download the official version from Google Play.
How to find a flash drive through the "Files":
- 📂 Open the Files app and go to the Device tab (or Local Storage»).
- 🔍 Scroll down the list – the external drive should show up as a separate section with the name USB-accumulator, SD-map or portable device.
- 📁 If the flash drive is connected through OTG, The name may be the same as the manufacturer's name (e.g. SanDisk or Kingston).
- ⚙️ If there is no partition, click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select Show Hidden Devices».
In some versions of MIUI (e.g., MIUI 14 on Xiaomi 13 or POCO F5), the flash drive may not be immediately displayed. Try reconnecting it or restarting the phone. If that doesn't work, read on.
Check the physical connection (cable/adapter)
Reboot the phone.
Update the Files app on Google Play
Try another file manager (e.g. Solid Explorer)-->
2. Alternative file managers: if the standard does not show the flash drive
Xiaomi’s built-in manager doesn’t always work properly with external drives — especially if the flash drive is formatted in NTFS or exFAT. In such cases, a third-party app will help. We tested the following options on the Redmi Note 12 and POCO X5 Pro:
- 🛠️ Solid Explorer is a paid, trial-period. OTG, cloud storage and encryption.
- 📂 FX File Explorer – Free, with Support ROOT-Access (if the phone is unlocked).
- 🔧 Total Commander – a classic plugin manager for rare file systems.
How to check the flash drive with Solid Explorer:
- Install the app from Google Play and open it.
- In the side menu, select "Storage".
- Scroll down – the external drive will be marked with a USB or SD icon.
- If there is no flash drive, click on three dots → “Connect as” and select “Portative device”.
If you can't see the flash drive here, it could be the developer's settings or access rights, and you can read about that in the next section.

3.System settings: why Xiaomi doesn't see the flash drive
Sometimes the problem is not the flash drive itself, but the phone’s settings. Xiaomi based on Android 12+ (such as Xiaomi 12T or Redmi K50) can block access to external drives due to security policies.
Step 1: Permits for USB-device
- 🔄 Go to Settings. → Connections and sharing → USB.
- 📌 Select "Connect How» → «Portable device" (or "Flash drive»).
- ⚠️ If you don’t have an option, try another cable or adapter (some cheap ones). OTG-Transfers do not support data transfers).
Step 2: Developer settings
If the flash drive is defined but not mounted:
- Activate Developer Mode: Settings → About Phone → MIUI version (click 7 times).
- Back to Settings → Additionally. → For developers.
- Find the option "Configuration" USB by default and select "File transfer».
Step 3. Clear the cache
Sometimes it helps to reset the settings of applications responsible for working with USB:
- Go to Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Find the "Storage" and «USB-setting» (USB Settings).
- In each of them, click “Clear Cache” and “Reset Settings”.

4. Verification through notifications and control panel
When you connect the flash drive to Xiaomi through OTG, In the top notification panel, a type message should appear «USB-If it's not there, it could be a problem:
- 🔌 Cable/adapter (try another one).
- 🔋 Power (some flash drives require additional power – use a hub with an external source).
- 🛠️ porte USB-C (Check for debris or damage).
How to check the connection through the control panel:
- Connect the flash drive and swipe down from the top edge of the screen to open the notification bar.
- If the notification “USB for file transfer” appears, click on it.
- Select File Transfer (File Transfer) mode.
- If there is no notification, try reconnecting the flash drive or using a different port (on some models, for example, Xiaomi). 11T Pro, just one. USB-port OTG).
Important: on some Xiaomi phones (e.g. Redmi) 10C or POCO M4 Pro) notification of connection USB It may not appear if the settings are disabled «USB-Notifications. To enable them, go to Settings → Notifications → Additionally. → System notifications and activate the option «USB».
5. Search for hidden folders and system partitions
Sometimes the flash drive is plugged in, but its contents are not displayed due to hidden files or MIUI features. For example, on Xiaomi 13 Ultra, external drives can be mounted in the /storage/usbDriveA folder, which is hidden by default.
Method 1. Through a file manager with ROOT-access
- 🔓 Install Root Explorer or FX File Explorer.
- 📁 Enable the display of hidden files (in the application settings).
- 🔍 Go to the root directory (/) and find the mnt, storage, or usbDrive folders.
Method 2. via ADB (for advanced users)
If you have experience with ADB, you can check the mounting of the flash drive through the command line:
adb shell
ls /storageIf you have folders like usbDriveA or UDisk in the output, your USB drive is mounted there. To access it without ROOT, use the command:
adb pull /storage/usbDriveA/ ~/Downloads/(Replace the path with the current one).
| Xiaomi model | Typical path to the flash drive | Need a ROOT? |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 12/13 Series | /storage/usbDriveA or /mnt/media_rw/usb | No. |
| Redmi Note 10/11 | /storage/UDisk | Sometimes. |
| POCO F3/F4 | /mnt/usb_storage | Yes. |
| Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite | /storage/emulated/0/usb | No. |
💡
If you often work with external drives, add a shortcut for quick access: open the file manager, find the folder with the flash drive, click on three dots → “Add to the main screen”.
Problems with formatting and compatibility
One of the most common reasons Xiaomi doesn't see a flash drive is because of an incompatible file system. Android phones work best with FAT32 and exFAT, but may not support NTFS or EXT4.
How to check the file system of the flash drive:
- 🖥️ Connect the flash drive to the computer (Windows/macOS/Linux).
- 📊 On Windows: Open “This Computer” and right-click on the flash drive → «The file system is listed in the tab "General».
- 🐧 Nana Linux/macOS: execute the command df -h terminally.
How to reformat the flash drive for Xiaomi:
- Save all important data from the flash drive (formatting them will delete!).
- On Windows: Open Disk Management (Win + R → diskmgmt.msc). Find the flash drive, right-click → Format. Select FAT32 (if up to 32 GB) or exFAT (if more).

⚠️ Note: if the flash drive is formatted in NTFS, Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi) 9A or POCO M3) They won't be able to read it. Also, avoid the file system. EXT4 — It is designed for Linux and is not supported by Android.
Once formatted, reconnect the flash drive to your phone. If the problem persists, check it on another device (such as Samsung or Huawei), and if it doesn't work there, the drive may have failed.
7 Hardware problems: when it is not the fault of software
If none of these things worked, the problem could be the hardware, and here are the most common reasons:
- 🔌 Faulty. OTG-Adapter – Try another one (preferably original from Xiaomi).
- 🔋 Damaged. USB-Port – check if it is contaminated or if the contacts are bent.
- 💾 Broken flash drive, plug it into your PC, and if your computer can't see the drive, it's probably out of order.
- 🔄 Power shortages – some flash drives (especially 128GB capacity)+) It takes more power than a phone can give. OTG-feed-in.
How to check the USB port on your phone:
- Connect your phone to charge. If it's not charging or charging slowly, the port could have failed.
- Try connecting another device via an OTG (like a mouse or keyboard) if it doesn't work, the problem is in the port.
- Check the connector for debris or oxidation. Clean it carefully with a toothpick if necessary (do not use metal objects!).
⚠️ Warning: If you suspect a problem is in the port USB-C, Do not attempt to repair it yourself - this could damage the motherboard. contact Xiaomi Service Center or a trusted wizard.
If the phone doesn’t see the microSD card (rather than the flash drive via OTG), check:
- 📱 Is the card inserted correctly in the tray (on some models, for example, the Redmi Note 8 Pro, the second slot supports only microSD, not the second one) SIM).
- 🔧 Card-to-phone compatibility (some older Xiaomi models don’t support cards over 256GB).
- 🔄 Formatting a card directly in the phone: Settings → Memory. → Memory map → Format.
💡
If the flash drive works on other devices but not your Xiaomi, the problem is most likely in the phone settings or malfunctioning. OTG-If it doesn't work anywhere, the drive fails.
