Why does the MIUI update notification appear over and over again?
Xiaomi Redmi smartphone owners regularly face the same problem: even after turning off automatic updates, the system stubbornly reminds of the new version of MIUI through notifications. It's not just annoying - constant alerts eat up battery power, distract from work and can accidentally start the upgrade process if you click the wrong way.
The reason is Xiaomiβs aggressive policy of promoting new firmware, which has integrated a forced notification mechanism at the system service level that is not always amenable to standard settings, and after some updates to MIUI 12/13/14, these alerts have even appeared on devices with the Internet disconnected, the system caches information about available versions and shows it at the earliest opportunity.
In this article, we will discuss 5 working methods, from basic to advanced, including hidden settings and ADB commands. You can choose the method depending on your Redmi model (for example, Redmi Note 10 Pro, Redmi 9T or POCO X3) and the level of technical training. Importantly, some solutions will require unlocking the bootloader or root rights, but we will show you where you can do without them.
Method 1: Standardly disable notifications in MIUI settings
Let's start with the simplest method, which works on most devices without any additional manipulation, and this is a good way to do it if the notification appears sporadically and does not block work.
Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management. In the search box, type "System Update" (or com.android.updater in English firmware). Open the app and select Notifications.
- π Show notifications (main switchboard)
- π₯ Download updates (if any)
- π New versions available
On some versions MIUI 14 Ways may be different: Settings β The phone. β Updating the system β βοΈ (gear) β Notification settings. When you turn off, restart the device to help you fix the changes.
β οΈ Attention: On firmware MIUI Global may reset these settings after resetting or updating through Recovery. Check them after any system changes.

Method 2: Limiting background activity for System Updates
If the standard shutdown didn't work, the reason could be the background activity of the system application. Xiaomi often runs a covert update check even when you can't see it. To stop it, you need to restrict the rights of the application.
Open Settings Again β Applications β Application Management β System Update. Here, do the following:
- Press the Battery. β Limit background activity.
- Select AutoRun and turn it off.
- In the Permissions section, prohibit Internet access (Wi-Fi and mobile data).
- In Warehouse, click on βClear Cacheβ and βClear Dataβ (this will remove downloaded service packs).
These measures will not remove the com.android.updater app itself, but will prevent it from checking for updates and showing notifications, a minus of the method: if you ever want to upgrade, you will have to temporarily refund permissions.

If the notification disappeared after cleaning the data, but returned after a day, check if the automatic synchronization in the Mi Account is turned on. Disable it in Settings β Accounts β Mi Account β Synchronization.
Method 3: Disconnect via ADB (without root)
For users who are ready for more complex manipulations, there is a reliable method using ADB (Android Debug Bridge), which does not require root rights, but requires a computer and enabled debugging over USB.
First, prepare the device:
- Activate Developer Mode: Go to Settings β About Phone and click on MIUI Version 7 times.
- Return to Settings β Additional β For developers and enable βDebugging by USBβ.
- Connect the smartphone to the PC, confirm the debugging permission.
Now run the command in the terminal (or Command Prompt on Windows):
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.updaterThis command completely disables the System Update app for the current user. To return it back, use:
adb shell pm enable com.android.updaterβ οΈ Note: Some Redmi models (e.g. Redmi Note 8 Pro) may miss the update option after this command. To update in the future, you will have to temporarily turn the application back on.
What if the ADB does not recognize the device?
Method 4: Remove the service pack via TWRP (for advanced)
If you have a custom TWRP recap, you can radically remove the system update app, a method that is suitable for users who are confident that they will never be updated through standard MIUI tools.
Instructions:
- Boot to TWRP (turn off the phone, then press Power + Volume up).
- Go to Advanced β File Manager.
- Open /system/priv-app/Updater (or /system/app/Updater on older versions).
- Delete the Updater folder or the Updater.apk file.
- Reset the device.
After that, System Update will disappear from the settings menu and notifications will not appear forever, but remember: for future updates, you will need to use fastboot or custom firmware.
| Method | Need root? | You need a PC? | Reversibility | Risks. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Disabling notifications | β No. | β No. | β Yes. | May be reset after the update |
| Background restriction | β No. | β No. | β Yes. | The application can restore rights |
| ADB-team | β No. | β Yes. | β Yes. | Can hide the update item in the settings |
| Removal via TWRP | β Yes. TWRP) | β Yes. | β No (no backup) | Loss of ability to update via MIUI |
Method 5: Use of third-party utilities (for root)
If you have root rights, you can use applications like Titanium Backup or App Systemizer to freeze or delete com.android.updater.
- π§ Freeze the application (stop it without deleting it).
- ποΈ Delete completely (with the risk of losing the functionality of the updates).
- π Recovery in case of errors.
For Titanium Backup:
- Open the app and find System Update in the list.
- Click on it and select Freeze.
- Confirm the action and restart the device.
The advantage of this method is flexibility: you can unfreeze the application at any time, but remember that root is unwarranted and can disrupt the Mi Account (for example, Find Device will stop working).
π‘
Use βfreezeβ instead of deleting β this will allow you to return the functionality of the updates in one click, if necessary.
What do you do if nothing helps?
If you have tried all the ways, but the notification keeps coming, the problem may be:
- π Cached data β try clearing the cache in Settings β Warehouse β Clear cache for all applications.
- π± Firmware with bugs - some builds MIUI (for example, MIUI 12.5 Enhanced) have bugs in the update service. 4PDA or XDA Developers for your model.
- π§ Hidden services β Xiaomi with HyperOS (new firmware) notifications can come via com.miui.systemAdSolution. ADB.
The last measure is a complete reset β apply only if the notification is critically disruptive. Before reset, back up through Settings β Additional β Backup and Reset.
If you use Xiaomi Redmi at work and notifications block important alerts (such as from Microsoft Teams or Zoom), consider switching to custom firmware like LineageOS or Pixel Experience.
