Installing full firmware on Xiaomiβs smartphone via the phone itself is a procedure that can be needed if there are serious system failures, a need to roll back on the old version of MIUI or switch to global firmware with Chinese. Unlike an Air Update (OTA), manual firmware via Recovery or Fastboot gives you full control over the process, but requires accuracy: an error at any stage can turn the device into a βbrickβ.
In this article, we will discuss three official ways to install firmware via your phone: System Update (for example, for the first time). ZIP-Recovery (for reset devices) and Fastboot (for deep changes) will focus on preparation, from unlocking the bootloader to checking firmware compatibility with the Xiaomi model. You will also find a table with current links to official resources and solutions for common bugs, such as Error 7 or Anti-rollback.
If youβre a beginner, start with the Preparation section β it describes all the preliminary steps, including backing up data and checking the MIUI version.
1. Preparation for firmware installation: what to do before the start
Before downloading the firmware, make sure your device is ready for the procedure. Failure to comply with at least one of the points below can lead to data loss or locking your smartphone.
- π Battery charge at least 60% When installed via Recovery or Fastboot, the phone should not turn off.
- π± Device model. Find out the exact modification in Settings β The phone. β Model (e.g. Redmi Note 12 Pro)+ 5G or POCO X5 The firmware for the Redmi Note 11 will not work for the Redmi Note 11 Pro!
- π Unlocked bootloader. Unlocking is required to install via Fastboot (instructions in the next section).
- πΎ Backup. Save contacts, photos and apps to Mi Cloud or your computer β the firmware erases data.
Also check the current version of MIUI in Settings β About Phone β MIUI version. If you install an older firmware than the one that stands now, Anti-rollback protection may work (more on this below).
β οΈ Note: If your Xiaomi was purchased in China, it may be running firmware without Google services. Installing a global version will require a full Fastboot flashing.
2. Unlocking the bootloader: a must-do step for Fastboot
The bootloader on all Xiaomi smartphones is locked by default. To install the firmware through Fastboot, it must be unlocked. The procedure takes 3 to 7 days due to the Mi Account verification.
Instructions:
- Link the device to your Mi Account in Settings β Xiaomi Account.
- Activate USB debugging: Settings β About Phone β MIUI version (click 7 times), then Settings β Additional β For Developers β Debugging over USB.
- Download the Mi Unlock Tool (official website) and run it on PC.
- Connect the phone in Fastboot mode (turn off, then press Volume Down + Power).
- Follow the instructions of the program. After sending a request, wait for the confirmation SMS (may take up to a week).
If the unlocking does not pass, check:
- π Mi Account is linked to phone and confirmed by SMS/email.
- π± The device was not unlocked earlier (limit - 1 time in 30 days).
- π₯οΈ The official version of the Mi Unlock Tool (unmodified).
β οΈ Attention: Unlocking the bootloader resets all data on the phone! Also, after it, some functions, such as Mi Pay or Find Device, may stop working.

3. Where to download the official firmware for Xiaomi
The official firmware for Xiaomi is available on three resources:
| Resource | Type of firmware | Reference | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official MIUI website | Recovery, Fastboot (stable and beta) | new.c.mi.com | Selection of model and region is required |
| 4PDA (Russian-speaking community) | Recovery, Fastboot, custom | 4pda.to | There are modified firmware with Google |
| Xiaomi Firmware Updater | Fastboot (weekly builds) | xiaomifirmwareupdater.com | Automatic updates for enthusiasts |
How to choose the right firmware:
- On the official website, type in the phone model (for example, Redmi Note 12 Pro).
- Select the region: Global (with Google), China (without Google), EEA (Europe), Russia.
- Download Recovery (to install via phone) or Fastboot (for PC).
- Check the build number: it should be newer than the current version (if you upgrade) or compatible with Anti-rollback (if you roll back).
The firmware file usually weighs 2-4 GB. After downloading, check its integrity (for example, through the MD5-sum indicated on the site).

If you download firmware via your phone, use Wi-Fi β mobile internet may interrupt the download due to traffic restrictions.
4. Install firmware through "System Update" (for ZIP-file)
The easiest way is to install it through a standard update menu, suitable for firmware in.zip format (usually Recovery ROM).
Step-by-step:
- Move the downloaded.zip file to the root folder of internal memory (not in folders!).
- Open Settings β About the phone β System update.
- Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select Select the firmware file.
- Specify the downloaded file and confirm the installation.
- Wait for the reboot (it will take 5-15 minutes).
This method does not require unlocking the bootloader and is suitable for:
- π² Updates to the new version MIUI (if available OTA).
- π System Restore after a failure (if the phone is turned on).
- π Transition from Chinese firmware to global (if allowed Anti-rollback).
β οΈ Note: If after installation the phone is stuck on startup the logo MI, Wait 20 to 30 minutes. If nothing changes, reboot to Recovery. + Power) and select Wipe data.

5. Install firmware via Recovery (for reset devices)
If your phone is not turning on or you have run Wipe data, you can install the firmware via Recovery Mode. This requires a Recovery ROM file (not Fastboot!).
Instructions:
- Download the firmware.zip and rename it to update.zip (required!).
- Transfer the file to the root of the internal memory or to the SD-card (if supported).
- Turn off the phone, then press Volume Up + Power to enter Recovery.
- Select the language (if available), then Install update.zip to System.
- Confirm the installation and wait for completion.
If you do not have Install update.zip in Recovery, you will:
- π You have customized recovery (for example) installed, TWRP). In this case, select Install and specify the file manually.
- π± Your Xiaomi model doesnβt support this method (relevant for newer devices with a newer device). MIUI 14+).
Once installed, select Reboot to System. The first run can take up to 10 minutes.

Installing through Recovery doesnβt require unlocking the bootloader, but resets all data. Use this method only if the phone doesnβt turn on or after a complete reset.
6. Install firmware via Fastboot (for power users)
Fastboot is the most reliable, but it's also the most complex, and it's suitable for:
- π§ Complete flashing of the device (for example, from Chinese to global version).
- π οΈ Recovery after a major failure (e.g. Bootloop).
- π Backtracking to the old version MIUI (risk-averse anti-rollback).
The installation will require:
- π₯οΈ Computer with drivers installed ADB/Fastboot.
- π± Unlocked loader (see section 2).
- π Firmware in.tgz or.zip format (Fastboot) ROM).
- π οΈ Mi Flash Tool (download from official website).
Step-by-step:
- Unpack the firmware in a folder on your PC (for example, C:\MIUI\).
- Turn off the phone and press Volume Down + Power to log into the Fastboot.
- Connect the device to the PC via USB.
- Launch the Mi Flash Tool, press Select and specify the folder with the firmware.
- At the bottom, select Clean All mode (complete clean) or Save user data (save data, but may cause errors).
- Press Flash and wait until it is completed (5-10 minutes).
If the process is interrupted with an Anti-rollback error, you are trying to install too old firmware.
- π Find a newer version MIUI (not older than the current).
- π§ Contact Xiaomi to Reset Anti-Rollback (Purchase Check Required).
β οΈ Note: Installing via Fastboot with the Clean all option completely erases internal memory, including folder MIUI Do not use this method without a backup copy!
7.Typical errors and their solutions
When installing firmware, you can get errors, and here are the most common ways to fix them:
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Error 7 (in Recovery) | Incompatibility of the firmware with the device | Download firmware for an exact model (e.g. Redmi Note 12 Pro) β Redmi Note 12 Pro+) |
| Anti-rollback | Attempt to roll back on the unauthorised version | Install a newer firmware or contact Xiaomi for support |
| This package is for... only | Firmware for another region | Select the firmware with the right region (Global/China/EEA) |
| Hanging on the MI logo | Incomplete installation or conflict of data | Go to Recovery and select Wipe Data |
If the phone does not turn on after firmware or gives an error No command:
- Try re-install the firmware through Fastboot.
- Check if the MIUI model and version are correct.
- If nothing helps, contact the Xiaomi service center (with a purchase check).
Also, check the MIUI version after installation, if it's different from what you'd expect, check:
- π Is the firmware chosen correctly (for example, Stable vs Developer).
- π Did the Anti-rollback work (in which case the version may be newer than you installed).
