Why donβt both Xiaomi headphones work at the same time?
When one earbud connects and the other doesn't, it means that the headphone (usually the right earbud) is lost synced with the smartphone, and then transmits the sound to the second on a separate channel, and if that chain breaks, you hear the sound in only one earbud.
The main causes of the problem:
- π A discharged battery in one of the headphones (even if the indicator is on, the charge can be critically low).
- π Failure to sync between headphones after incorrect connection or firmware update.
- π± Phone incompatibility (obsolete Bluetooth version or conflict with other devices).
- π οΈ Hardware failure (damage to contacts, microphone or speaker).
- π§ Firmware failure (relevant for models with support for updates, for example, Xiaomi Air 2 Pro).
Most often, the problem arises after:
- π Connecting headphones to another device (laptop, tablet).
- π΅ Prolonged inactivity (earphones were lying discharged for several weeks).
- β‘ Disconnecting from the phone (for example, if you pull the earphone from the ear during a call).
- π Updates to the firmware of the phone or the headphones themselves.
Method 1: Reboot and reset headphones
Start with the simplest one, forced reboot of headphones, which works 70 percent of the time and doesn't require any additional tools.
Instructions:
- Put both headphones in the case and close the lid.
- Wait 10 seconds, then open the case.
- Pull out the headphones and hold the button (touch bar) on both headphones for 10-15 seconds until the indicators start flashing red and white.
- Close the case, wait 30 seconds and reconnect.
If the reboot didnβt help, perform a full reset:
Make sure both headphones are charged |Put your headphones in the case and close the cover |Push and hold the button on the case for 20 seconds (the indicator flashes red)|Pick out the headphones and wait for automatic synchronization (the indicators must flash alternately) |Remove the headphones from the list of conjugated devices on the phone and connect again
-->
For models with touch control (for example, Xiaomi Air 2 SE or Redmi Buds 4), the reset is performed differently:
- Get the headphones out of the case.
- Touch the touchpad on both headphones 5 times in a row (with an interval of ~1 second).
- Indicators should flash red β white β red.
- Put the headphones back in the case, close the lid for 10 seconds and reconnect.
β οΈ Note: After reset, the headphones can be temporarily defined as two separate devices (Mi True Wireless Earbuds Left and Right). Do not connect them separately - wait for automatic synchronization (the indicators should flash in unison).
Method 2: Checking the charge and contacts of the case
If one of the headphones doesn't respond to the reset, the problem could be a dead battery or poor contact with the case, a point many users miss, although it's critical for stable performance.
What to do:
- π Check the charge level of the case: connect it to the charge for 30 minutes. the indicator on the case should burn red (charged) or green (fully charged).
- π Check the contacts inside the case and on the headphones: they should be clean, free of oxidation or contamination.
- π Try swapping your headphones in the case (right to left slot and vice versa) and sometimes it helps to wake up a broken earphone.
- β‘ If the case is not charging, try another cable or power supply. Some models (e.g. Haylou) GT1) low-current.
How to check if the headphone is charging:
- Put the earpiece in the case and close the lid.
- After 5 minutes, pull it out and look at the indicator: Red - charge less than 20%, need to recharge; orange - charge 20-50%; green - charge more than 50%; the indicator does not burn - the earphone does not contact the case or the battery is completely discharged.
| Symptoms. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The indicator does not burn when charging | Contact oxidation or battery failure | Clean contacts with alcohol, check the case with another cable |
| The earpiece is defined as a separate device | Failure of synchronization between headphones | Reset headphones (way 1), wait for the automatic pair |
| The sound is interrupted or disappears in one headphone | Weak Bluetooth signal or interference | Reconnect headphones, remove sources of interference (Wi-Fi routers, microwaves) |
| The earpiece makes a squeak or a crackle. | Moisture intrusion or damage to the speaker | Dry the headphone for 24 hours in rice, if it does not help β repair |
β οΈ Note: If after cleaning contacts and full charging the headphone still does not turn on, do not try to disassemble it yourself - this can lead to loss of warranty.
Method 3: Update the firmware headphones
Some Xiaomi models (such as the Air 2 Pro, FlipBuds Pro or Redmi Buds 4 Active) support firmware updates. If the headphones started to glittle after the phone or headphones were updated, the problem could be with the software.
How to update firmware:
- Install the official Mi Home or Xiaomi Wear app (depending on the model).
- Connect the headphones to the phone via Bluetooth.
- Open the app, find your headphones in the list of devices.
- Go to the Settings section β Update the firmware.
- If a new version is available, click Update and wait for the process to complete (donβt turn off the headphones!).
For models without support OTA-Updates (e.g. Redmi AirDots or Haylou) GT1) You can try manual updates through PC:
How to update firmware through PC (advanced method)
If after the update, the headphones stopped working completely:
- Perform reset (mode 1).
- Remove the headphones from the list of Bluetooth devices on your phone.
- Reboot the phone.
- Reconnect the connection.
π‘
Updating the firmware can solve connection problems, but only if they are caused by software errors. If the headphones are physically damaged, firmware won't help.
Method 4: Checking Compatibility with the Phone
Sometimes the problem isn't with the headphones, but with the phone or its settings, like older Bluetooth 4.0 smartphones that might not work properly with the phone. TWS-Headphones that require Bluetooth 5.0.
What to check:
- π± Bluetooth version on your phone: Go to Settings β The phone. β Bluetooth version. For stable operation of Xiaomi AirDots and similar models, Bluetooth 5.0 is required+.
- π Conflict with other devices: Disable all other Bluetooth devices (fitness bracelets, speakers, smart watches) Remove the headphones from the list of associated devices and reconnect.
- π Developer Mode: Activate Developer Mode in your phone settings. Enable Bluetooth Debugging (sometimes helps with connection issues).
If you have an iPhone:
- π Reset Network Settings: Go to Settings β Mainstream β Reset β Reset the network settings.
- π Forget the device: In Bluetooth settings, click on the βiβ icon next to the headphones and select Forget this device.
Important: Xiaomi headphones are optimized to work with phones on MIUI. On other brands (Samsung, iPhone) there may be problems with autoconnection or sound.
Method 5: Diagnostics of hardware malfunctions
If none of the software methods worked, maybe the problem is the physical breakdown.
Signs of hardware malfunctions:
- π There is no sound in one earphone, but the indicator is on: possibly damaged speaker or audio chip.
- π§ The earphone cracks or wheezes: moisture or clogging of the speaker.
- π Earphone discharges quickly: battery wear (relevant after 1-2 years of use).
- πΆ Permanent communication breaks: damage to Bluetooth antenna.
