The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 fitness tracker remains one of the most popular trackers even years after its release, thanks to its reliability, sensor accuracy and compatibility with most smartphones. However, the process of connecting it to the phone often raises questions: the application does not find the device, Bluetooth refuses to work, the data does not sync. In this article, we will analyze all the stages of connection from bracelet preparation to notification settings, and also consider typical errors and how to fix them.
It is important to understand that the Mi Band 3 supports two official applications from Xiaomi: the outdated Mi Fit (no longer updated) and the current Mi Fitness (formerly Zepp Life). We will use the second one - it works more stable with modern versions of Android and iOS. If you have a bracelet stitched with custom firmware (for example, Amazfit or Notify & Fitness), the instructions may differ - we will discuss this in a separate section.
1. Preparation of the bracelet and phone before connection
Before you start syncing, make sure both devices are ready to go. Xiaomi Mi Band 3 comes in sleep mode - it needs to be "waked up" and charged. Here's what you need to do:
- π Bracelet charging: Connect the tracker to the charging cable (magnetic connector should fit tightly to the contacts on the back). Charging up to 100% takes ~1.5-2 hours Indicator: on the screen of the bracelet will appear the icon of the battery with an animation of charging.
- π± Update of the phone OS: On Android, check the version in Settings β About the phone, on iOS - in Settings β Mainstream β Software update: For stable operation of Mi Fitness requires Android 6.0+ or iOS 12.0+.
- π Reset bracelet (if used before): Press the touch button under the screen for 10-15 seconds until the vibration and the words Reset appear.
Pay special attention to Bluetooth permissions. On Android, open Settings β Applications β Mi Fitness β Permits and turn on:
- π Location (required for scanning Bluetooth devices)
- π Bluetooth (access to connection)
- π Storage (to save training data)
π‘
If you have an iPhone, turn off Charge Saving mode in Settings β Battery before connecting. In this mode, iOS limits background Bluetooth operation, which can interrupt sync.
2. Installation and configuration of the Mi Fitness application
The official Mi Fitness app (formerly Zepp Life) is the only reliable way to connect the Mi Band 3 to your phone.
- π€ Android: Google Play (version 5.0)+)
- π iOS: App Store (version 4.6)+)
After installation, follow the following steps:
- Sign in/register: Open the app and log in via Xiaomi Account, Google or Apple ID. Without an account, synchronization between devices is impossible β the bracelet will only work as a pedometer without a history.
- Select device: Click Add device β Bracelet β Mi Smart Band 3.
- Permissions: Give the app access to notifications, contacts (for incoming calls) and physical activity (for Apple Health/Google Fit).
If the app does not find the bracelet, check:
- π Bluetooth: Is it enabled on your phone and is Mi Band 3 visible on the list of available devices (see Settings) β Bluetooth).
- πΆ Distance: The bracelet should be no further than 1 meter from the phone.
- π Reboot: Reboot both devices if the connection is not established.
3. Step-by-step connection instruction
Now, to the synchronization process itself, follow the instructions in strict order, and skipping the steps can lead to errors.
Install Mi Fitness and register|Turn on Bluetooth on your phone|Wake up the bracelet by pressing the button|Start searching for the device in the application|Confirm the pairing on the phone and bracelet|Update the firmware (if requested)-->
Step 1 Activation of the bracelet
Press the touch button below the Mi Band 3. The Mi logo and vibration should appear. If the screen doesn't respond, put the bracelet on charge for 5-10 minutes - perhaps the battery is completely discharged.
Step 2: Find the device in Mi Fitness
In the app, click Add Device β select Mi Smart Band 3. Scan starts. When the bracelet appears on the list, tap it. The phone will have a Bluetooth pairing request, confirm it.
Step 3. Confirmation on the bracelet
The Mi Band 3 will have a 6-digit code on its screen. Compare it to the Mi Fitness app and click the tick on the bracelet (swipe up or press a button). If the codes don't match, click Cancel and search again.
Step 4: Update the firmware
Once connected, the app may suggest updating the bracelet firmware. We recommend that you agree that new versions fix synchronization errors and add features. The process will take 3-5 minutes. Do not interrupt the update and turn off Bluetooth - this can lead to "bricking" the bracelet.
What to do if the update is suspended?
4.Configure the main functions of the bracelet
Once successfully connected, we will configure the key settings of the Mi Band 3 for comfortable use, most of the options are available in the Device Profile section of Mi Fitness.
| Function | Where to set up | Recommendations |
|---|---|---|
| Call notifications | Notifications β Incoming calls | Turn on the bracelet to vibrate when you call. iPhone requires additional permission in Settings β Bluetooth β Mi Band 3 β Allow notifications. |
| Alerts from the annexes | Notifications β Annexes | Choose messengers (WhatsApp, Telegram) and social networks. On Android, you can configure the filter by keywords. |
| Automatic sleep recognition | Sleep β Auto-tracking | Turn on the sleep phases for analysis. Turn off if you sleep less than 4 hours, the data will be inaccurate. |
| Raising your hand to turn on the screen | Display β Lifting up your wrist | Conveniently, but it reduces the battery life by 10 to 15 percent. It's better to use a button. |
| Activity targets | Goals β Steps/Calories | Set realistic values (e.g., 8,000 steps instead of the standard 10,000 steps). |
Pay special attention to setting alarm clocks, and in Mi Band 3 you can create them directly on the bracelet:
- Flick the bracelet screen up to the alarm point.
- Press the button to add a new alarm clock.
- Set the time with swipes up/down.
- Choose the days of the week (default β daily).
- Save it by clicking the box.
π‘
To save charge, turn off unnecessary notifications and reduce the brightness of the bracelet screen to 2-3 divisions, which will increase the autonomy from 7 to 10-12 days.
5. Solving common problems
Even with the right connection, users are faced with errors, and let's look at the most common ones and how to fix them.
β οΈ Warning: If the bracelet doesn't vibrate or respond to taps, check if the phone is on Do Not Disturb or Energy Saving. These modes block the background Bluetooth operation.
Problem 1: The app doesn't find the bracelet
- π Reboot both devices.
- π± Remove Mi Band 3 from the list of associated devices in Settings β Bluetooth.
- π Check the bracelet charge (less than 10% may prevent the connection).
- π οΈ Install an alternative software - Notify & Fitness for Mi Band (available on Google Play).
Problem 2: Data is not synchronized
- πΆ Check your Internet connection β Xiaomi needs mobile traffic or Wi-Fi to sync with the cloud.
- β³ Manually update data: open Mi Fitness, pull the screen down for updates.
- π Disable and reconnect the bracelet in the application settings.
Problem 3: The bracelet discharges quickly
- π¦ Reduce the brightness of the screen and turn off the Raise the wrist.
- π΅ Disable notifications from unnecessary applications.
- π Update the firmware β in new versions optimized battery consumption.
π‘
If the bracelet stopped vibrating at notifications, check the Sound and Vibration settings in Mi Fitness. Sometimes resetting the bracelet settings (via Additional β Reset) solves the problem.
6. Alternative ways of connecting
If the standard Mi Fitness method doesn't work, you can use third-party solutions that are suitable for advanced users willing to sacrifice official support for additional features.
1 Notify and Fitness for Mi Band
This app supports Mi Band 3 and adds features that are not available in the official software:
- π Advanced sleep statistics (phase schedules, time of falling asleep).
- π Set up vibration for each application separately.
- π¨ Screen Customization (Changing fonts, icons).
To connect:
- Install Notify & Fitness.
- Open the app and select Mi Band 3.
- Follow the instructions on the screen (you will need to turn off the bracelet from Mi Fitness).
Method 2: Mi Band 3 Tools (for firmware and recovery)
The Windows/macOS utility allows you to reflash the bracelet if it is βburiedβ after a failed update. Use with caution β wrong actions can permanently disable the device.
You can download it on GitHub. You'll need to:
- π₯οΈ Computer with Bluetooth 4.0+.
- π Bracelet charging cable (for recovery mode).
- π Firmware file (e.g, mi_band_3_firmware_1.0.1.84.bin).
β οΈ Note: Firmware via Mi Band 3 Tools voids Xiaomi warranty. If bracelet warranties, contact service center.
7.Restore the bracelet after failure
If the Mi Band 3 stopped turning on, stuck on the logo or does not respond to charging, try the following recovery methods.
Method 1: Hard discharge
- Connect the bracelet to the charger.
- Press the touch button for 20-30 seconds until you feel the vibration.
- Release the button and the bracelet should reset.
Method 2: Firmware through Gadgetbridge
If the reset does not help, you will need to re-flash the bracelet:
- Install Gadgetbridge on your PC.
- Connect the bracelet to charging and start the utility.
- Choose Mi Band 3 β Install firmware.
- Please specify the path to the firmware file (you can download here).
- Wait until the cable is completed (donβt turn off the cable!).
Method 3: Contacting the Service
If the bracelet does not respond to firmware, hardware malfunctions are possible:
- π Bloating or battery failure.
- π§ Infection of moisture (despite water resistance) IP68, salt or chlorine can damage your contacts).
- π§ Damage to the screen plume.
In this case, contact an authorized service center Xiaomi. the cost of repairing the Mi Band 3 usually does not exceed 1500-2000 rubles, but it is often cheaper to buy a new bracelet.
