Why Xiaomi Headphones May Need a Reboot
Xiaomi True Wireless Earbuds (Redmi AirDots, Mi True Wireless, Xiaomi Buds, etc.) are popular devices with excellent price-performance ratios. However, even they sometimes fail: they donβt connect to the phone, donβt sync with each other, give out distorted sound or donβt charge, and in 80% of cases, these problems are solved by a simple reset (soft reset) or a full reset (hard reset) to factory settings.
Reboot is needed when:
- π One or both headphones are not identified in the Bluetooth Devices list.
- π The sound is interrupted, wheezing or delays appear (lag)
- π Headphones do not charge in the case or discharge quickly
- π§ The left/right ear is not synchronized with the main ear.
- π± Mi Earphones app does not recognize the device
It is important to understand the difference between rebooting (temporary power outage) and resetting (complete deletion of settings). The first method is safe and recommended for starting a diagnosis, the second is an extreme measure, after which the headphones will have to be reset.
Method 1: Classic reset (soft reset)
This method works for most Xiaomi TWS models, including Redmi AirDots 3/Pro, Xiaomi Buds 3/4, Mi True Wireless Earbuds Basic 2, etc. It does not remove the conjugated devices, but resets temporary errors.
Instructions:
- Put both headphones in the charging case and close the lid.
- Wait 10-15 seconds β during this time the devices will completely shut down.
- Open the case cover and remove the headphones.
- Press and hold the touchpads on both headphones simultaneously for 10-15 seconds until the lights start flashing red and white.
- Place the headphones back in the case for 5 seconds, then pull out - they will automatically turn on and be ready to connect.
Make sure your headphones are at least 20 times charged%|

If the headphones still do not work after restarting, try an alternative method:
- Remove the headphones from the case.
- Press and hold the touchpad only on the right earpiece for 20 seconds until the indicator flashes red.
- Repeat the same for the left earpiece.
- Put both devices in the case for 30 seconds, then pull out and try to connect again.
β οΈ Note: On Xiaomi Buds 3 Pro and newer models, holding the touchpad for more than 20 seconds can trigger a factory reset. If the indicator starts flashing red and blue at the same time, release the button, otherwise all settings will be erased.
Method 2: Complete reset to factory settings (hard reset)
If soft reset doesn't work, you'll have to do a hard reset, which removes all the conjugated devices, resets the audio settings, and returns the headphones to the boxy state. Use it only as a last resort!
Step-by-step instructions for most models:
- Put both headphones in the charging case and close the lid.
- Open the lid, but don't remove the headphones.
- Press and hold the button on the back of the case (if any) or touch panels on both headphones simultaneously for 25-30 seconds.
- The headphones will flash red and white (in some models, red and blue).
- Close the case cover for 10 seconds, then open the headphones automatically reboot.
For the Redmi AirDots 2/3 and Mi True Wireless Earbuds 2, the process is slightly different:
Features of reset for AirDots 2/3
| Model headphones | Resetting method | Sign of successful discharge |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi AirDots (1st generation) | Hold the sensor on both headphones for 20 seconds. | Blinks red β white-coloured |
| Xiaomi Mi True Wireless Earbuds Basic 2 | The button in the case (clip) + retention of 15 seconds. | Case flashes red |
| Xiaomi Buds 3/4 Pro | Hold the sensor on the right earphone for 30 seconds. | Blinks red + blue |
| Redmi Buds 4 Active/Lite | Triple press on the sensor + hold 10 seconds. | Sound signal + flashing |
β οΈ Note: After hard reset, Xiaomi headphones can be temporarily defined in Bluetooth as "LE_..." or Basic_...". This is normal β after the first connection, the name will return to the standard (for example, "Redmi AirDots"). 3").
Method 3: Reboot via Mi Earphones
If the headphones connect to the phone but are not working smoothly, try rebooting them through the official Mi Earphones app (available for Android and iOS).This method is softer than manual resetting and saves settings.
Instructions:
- Install the Mi Earphones app from Google Play or the App Store.
- Connect the headphones to the phone via Bluetooth.
- Open the app and select your headphone model.
- Go to the Settings section β System information.
- Slip on the item Reset headphones and confirm the action.
You can also update your headphone firmware, which often solves connection and sound problems, to check for updates:
- Open Mi Earphones and connect the headphones.
- Go to Settings β Update firmware.
- If a new version is available, click Update and wait for the process to complete (donβt turn off the headphones!).
1. Remove the device from the Bluetooth list on the phone.
2. Turn off/on Bluetooth.
3. Reboot the phone.
4. Install the application again.

What to do if the headphones are not rebooted
If none of these things work, the problem can be even more serious, from a dead battery to a hardware malfunction.
- π Case and headphone charge: Connect the case to charge for 30 minutes, even if the indicator is on. Sometimes the power controller fails, and the real charge is lower than it shows LED.
- 𧲠External interference: Make sure there are no sources of strong electromagnetic fields (microwaves, routers) nearby. 5G, wireless charging).
- π² Phone Compatibility: Xiaomi Headphones Can Conflict with Custom Firmware (e.g, MIUI Try connecting to another device.
- π οΈ Physical damage: Check the contacts in the case and on the headphones for oxidation or dirt.
If the headphones don't respond anyway:
- Try charging them from another cable/power supply (sometimes the problem is in the system). USB-port).
- Leave the headphones in the case on charging for 12+ hours - this can "reanimate" a completely discharged battery.
- Check if the lights on the case are on when you connect to the charger. If not, the problem is in the case, not the headphones.
β οΈ Attention: On models of Xiaomi Buds 3T Pro and newer have protection against "deep discharge". If the headphones were lying without charging for more than 3 months, their battery could go into sleep mode.+ hourly) or service.
How to avoid problems in the future

- π Update your firmware regularly through the Mi Earphones app. New versions fix connection errors and improve stability.
- π Keep your headphones on when the charge drops below 20.
- π§Ό Clean contacts once a month with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol. Contact oxidation is a common cause of charging problems.
- π± Turn off Bluetooth when you're not using headphones. Constantly connecting to your phone drains your battery and can cause crashes.
- π‘οΈ Avoid extreme temperatures. Don't leave your headphones in the sun or in the cold, which is bad for your battery and electronics.
Headphones Xiaomi Buds 4 Pro and later support the function of βauto-switch offβ in prolonged inactivity (more than 5 minutes). If this feature interferes, it can be turned off in the settings of the Mi Earphones application in the Energy Saving section.
It is also worth monitoring the condition of the case:
- Do not drop the case - the impact can damage the charging controller.
- Do not use unoriginal charging cables (especially high-current cables).
- If the case began to warm up when charging - immediately turn it off and check for the presence of battery bloating.
When it's time to bring in service
If all the reboot and reset methods have not worked, it is possible that the headphones need repair.
- π One of the headphones is not fully turned on (no indication, does not respond to charging).
- π Case does not charge headphones, although it is charged from the network.
- π΅ The sound is distorted even after resetting and updating the firmware.
- πΆ Headphones are connected, but the connection is constantly broken (the problem with the Bluetooth module).
- π§ Physical damage is visible (cracks, bloated battery, oxidized contacts).
