Owners of the popular Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone often wonder about the possibility of using contactless technology, which allows not only to pay for purchases with a single touch, but also instantly exchange data with other devices. However, before looking for settings in the menu, you need to understand the hardware compatibility of your particular gadget.
The global version, known as the Redmi Note 4X, often featured an NFC module, while the Chinese version of the Redmi Note 4 (Helio X20) lacked this hardware capability in most cases. Understanding this difference is the first and most important step before any software manipulation.
If you try to find a switch in a system that is not physically on the board, it will only lead to a waste of time. In this guide, we will discuss in detail how to identify your modification, where to look for hidden settings and what software methods for emulating those cases where the module is still present, but hidden by firmware.
Verification of hardware compatibility of the device
The first thing you need to do is determine which modification you have in your hands, and Xiaomi has been releasing a device codenamed nickel (Chinese version with MediaTek processor) and miden (Global version with Qualcomm processor), and whether or not you have an antenna and a communication chip depends on that platform, and you can visually distinguish them by the processor specified in the specification or by the box.
The most reliable way to check is to use specialized diagnostic applications, programs like CPU-Z or AIDA64 scan hardware and give you a complete list of available sensors and communication modules, and if the sensor list does not mention NFC Controller or NXP, then unfortunately, the physical module in your phone is not installed.
β οΈ Warning: Trying to reflash the device from one version to another (for example, from Chinese to global) for the sake of appearance NFC will not give results if the chip is physically absent on the motherboard.
It is also worth paying attention to the tray for SIM-In some revisions of the global version, the antenna contact is located right there. If you see specific contacts on the end of the tray, the chances of having a function are significantly increased. In Chinese versions, these contacts are often absent or not connected to the board.
Search for settings in the MIUI interface
If you're convinced that there's a module, the next step is to find a software switch. In the MIUI shell, settings can be located in different places depending on the Android version and the firmware region. The standard path is usually through the main system settings menu. You need to find the partition responsible for wireless networks.
Often, users overlook the Quick Settings Panel. Swipe down from top to bottom, you see lots of icons. If the NFC icon isn't there, try pressing the edit button (usually a pencil or three dots) to add it to a prominent place. This is the fastest way to activate the module without diving deep into the menu.
In some cases, especially on older versions of MIUI 8 or 9, the setting may be hidden in the "More" or "More" menu. The path may look like: Settings β More β NFC. If after you navigate this path you see a blank screen or a message about the lack of service, this confirms the absence of drivers or hardware module.
- π± Go to Settings and select Connections and Sharing".
- π‘ Find the switch. NFC And activate it with a slider.
- π³ On the menu. NFC Select βSecure Itemβ and specify your payment service (e.g. Google Pay or Mi Pay).
Activation through the Engineering Menu
For advanced users who are confident in the chip but can't find it in the normal interface, there is an engineering menu, a hidden part of the system that is designed to test hardware, and you can log in through the standard Phone app by typing in a special code. MediaTek devices often have #3646633###, and Qualcomm's code #4636##.
Care must be taken after you log in. Changing the settings incorrectly can cause the radio module to work unstable. You need to find the Connectivity or Telephony tab, where all available communication functions are listed. If there is NFC on the list, make sure that the tick is ticked or the switch is in the On position.
It's important to understand that the engineering menu doesn't create a function out of nothing. Even if there's no option or no sulfur in the deepest level of access, the system can't see the controller, which can be a sign of a software failure or, more often, a hardware component being missing.

Configuring contactless payments
Once the module is successfully activated, you need to configure it to pay, which is the main use case for the technology in today's world. Payments require not only NFC enabled, but also the right "Secure Item" in the NFC settings, look for the Safe Item Location.
To use Google Pay (or its analogues) you need to select the option HCE Wallet, which is the mode that allows you to programmatically emulate a bank card. SIM-card, phone will try to use the operatorβs services, which in most cases are no longer relevant or do not support banking applications.
| Parameter | Recommended value | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Safety element | HCE Wallet | Used for Google Pay and banking applications |
| NFC-marker | On/off | Allows reading labels, can be turned off for savings |
| Android Beam | Off | Older file transfer function not needed for payments |
| Reading mode | On | Necessary to work with transport cards and bonuses |
Donβt forget to include the function as well. NFC-If you plan to read points from loyalty cards or transport cards, however, correct adjustments are sufficient for payments. HCE. After setting up, it is recommended to restart the device so that all services start correctly.
Software emulation and Root rights
Owners of the Chinese versions of Redmi Note 4 often look for ways to software enable NFC. There are methods that require superuser rights (Root), the essence of the method is to manually edit the system configuration files, where the system is informed of the presence of the module, but if the chip is not physically, this method will not make it appear.
To do this, you need to unlock the bootloader and install TWRP Recovery. Once you get the Root rights through Magisk, you can try to emulate the host, but remember, emulation won't create a radio signal. This only works if there's a chip on the board, but it's blocked by regional firmware restrictions.
β οΈ Warning: Getting Root rights and unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty and may result in banking applications failing due to security integrity breaches.
There are also card emulator apps that don't require rights, but they're extremely limited in functionality, that can read tag UIDs or transmit simple text data, but they're useless for emulating a payment token without hardware support for cryptographic keys.
Diagnostics and troubleshooting
There are times when a module was, but it stopped being defined. This can be due to a system failure, an unsuccessful upgrade, or physical damage. The first step should always be to completely reset the network settings. Go to Settings β Advanced Settings β Recovery and Reset β Reset Wi-Fi, mobile Internet, and Bluetooth.
If the reset didn't work, check if the installed software is blocking the module. Some battery-saving applications can aggressively turn off NFC background processes. It's also worth checking the list of applications that have access to NFC in the appropriate settings section. Make sure your payment application is allowed to run in the background.
In the case when the phone has stopped responding to tags after falling, the probability of the antenna plume leaving is high. In Redmi Note 4, the antenna module is often integrated into the back cover or connected by a separate connector to the board, in which case only disassembling the device and checking contacts will help.
- π Perform a device reboot in safe mode to eliminate the impact of third-party applications.
- π Check for system updates in the About Phone section.
- π Make sure the power saving mode does not turn off the communication module when the screen is locked.
