Modern Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones cannot be imagined without precise positioning. Geolocation is necessary not only for navigation in maps, but also for the correct operation of delivery services, taxis, and also for finding a lost device. Often users are faced with a situation where applications refuse to work or maps show the wrong place, and this is due to a disabled GPS module or a failure in privacy settings.
Incorporating this feature on the MIUI shell or the new HyperOS may differ from standard Android due to the peculiarities of Chinese optimization and strict energy saving settings. In this article, we will discuss all the available ways to activate, adjust accuracy and solve typical problems when the phone “cannot see” satellites, you will learn how to manage the access of applications to coordinates and protect yourself from unnecessary battery consumption.
It’s worth noting that the correct use of geodata directly affects the user experience. If you just purchased a device or upgraded to a new firmware version, it’s recommended to check the basic parameters right away. This will take a couple of minutes, but save you from a lot of inconvenience in the future, especially if you actively use messengers to transfer a point on the map or services to order food.
Quick activation through the notification curtain
The easiest and fastest way to enable geolocation is to use the Quick Access Panel, which is universal for all current Xiaomi smartphone models and does not require a deep dive into the settings menu.
Find an icon that resembles a geolocation tag or compass among the icons, which can be called “Location” or “GPS.” If you don’t see it on the first page, swipe left or click on the edit button (usually a pencil or three dots) to add a widget to the main screen of the control panel.
⚠️ Note: When geolocation is enabled through the curtain, the system may request confirmation to use the exact coordinates. If you are in a public place and are worried about privacy, it is better to temporarily activate the mode “Saving charge”, which determines the location by cell towers, not by satellites.
Once activated, the icon should light up, which indicates that the module has been successfully launched, and any applications you give permission to request your coordinates, but for full navigation to work, additional calibration is often required, which we will talk about in the next sections.
💡
Using a notification curtain is the fastest way, but it doesn’t guarantee high accuracy without additionally configuring the signal sources.
Deep setting in the system menu
To get more subtle control of parameters, you need to go to the system menu, where the user has full control over which services and how often the satellites are polling, and this is especially true if you want to save battery power or, conversely, increase accuracy to the maximum.
Follow the path: Settings → Privacy → Rights Management → Location. Some firmware versions may have slightly different paths: Settings → Additional settings → Privacy → Location. In the window that opens, you will see a shared switch, as well as a list of applications that have already requested your coordinates.
Why do I need background geolocation permission?
This section also often has the option, "Improving Accuracy," which allows your phone to use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth beacons to determine location, even if you're not connected to the wireless network right now, which is critical for working inside buildings where satellite signal is weak.
- 📍 Exact location: Uses GPS-module for determining coordinates up to several meters.
- 📡 Approximate location: Defines a neighborhood or city based on cell phone towers, which saves energy.
- 🔄 Place history: Stores data about visited places to create personalized recommendations in Google and Xiaomi services.
Remember to check the list of applications that have access to geodata regularly, and if you find a suspicious program that doesn't seem to need to know where you are, you can turn it off, and that will increase your digital security.
Configure access rights for individual applications
One of the key features of modern versions of Android and MIUI shells is detailed rights control, you can allow the application to access geolocation only while it is in use or completely deny it, which helps prevent surveillance and reduce the load on the processor.
To configure the rights for a particular application, go to Settings → Applications → All applications. Find the desired program (for example, Yandex.Maps, Telegram or Uber) and click on it. From the menu, select “App Permissions” and then “Location”.
The system will offer several behavior options:
- 🚫 Prohibit: The app will never get access to coordinates.
- 🕒 Ask: The phone will ask for permission each time the function is started.
- 🟢 Allow only during use: Access is available while the app screen is active.
- 🔵 Always Allow: Full access in the background (requires special attention).
⚠️ Warning: The Always Allow option is only available for a limited number of applications that are vital to system or security, and if you see this option for a simple flashlight or calculator, it’s a good idea to think about the security of such software.
For instant messengers like WhatsApp or Viber, it is recommended to choose “Only during use” mode, which will allow you to send geopoints to interlocutors, but will not allow the application to constantly track your movements in the background, which will positively affect the autonomy of the device.
GPS calibration and improved accuracy
There are situations where geolocation is enabled, but the navigator shows you are in the middle of a river or in the next block, in which case calibration is required. On Xiaomi smartphones, this process often happens automatically, but sometimes requires user intervention.
The most effective method is to use Google Maps. Open the app, click on the blue dot that indicates your current position, and select "Calibrate." Follow the on-screen instructions that usually suggest you steer your phone in the air, drawing an eight.
☑️ Checklist for signal improvement GPS
It’s also worth checking if flight mode or energy saving is included, which may limit your work. GPS-In the battery settings, make sure that navigation applications do not have background activity restrictions. If the problem persists, try resetting the network settings.
For professional diagnostics, you can use special tools like GPS Test or GPS Status & Toolbox, which show the number of satellites visible and the signal level, and if the phone does not see any satellites even in the open air, it may be a hardware problem.
Finding a lost device through Mi Cloud
One of the most important features of enabled geolocation is the ability to find a lost or stolen smartphone.Mi Cloud service (similar to Find My Device from Google) allows you to track the location of the device, block it or remotely erase data.
To work, it must be activated in advance. Check the path: Settings → Mi Account → Mi Cloud → Find the device. Make sure the switch is activated. Also, the device must be connected to the Internet (mobile or Wi-Fi).
| Function | Description of action | Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Searching device | Displaying the phone on the map in real time | GPS and Internet enabled |
| Sound. | Turning on a loud signal even in silent mode | Network access |
| Lockdown | Remote ban on smartphone use | Mi Account tied up |
| Erasure of data | Full reset to factory settings | Internet, risk of data loss |
If the phone has been turned off by intruders, the system can show the last known location before turning it off. This often helps narrow down searches. Newer versions of HyperOS have the ability to search for a device even without the Internet through a network of other Xiaomi gadgets nearby.
💡
Keep your device’s IMEI number in a safe place (not in the phone itself) to lock your phone through a carrier in case of theft.
Problems with location and their solution
Users often experience coordinates that freeze in place or jump on a map, which can be caused by software failures or external factors, and thick metal cases, magnetic holders in a car or dense buildings can shield the signal.
If the software methods don't work, try resetting the network settings. This will return Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and mobile network settings to factory values, which often eliminates driver conflicts. Path to reset: Settings → Connection and Sharing → Reset Wi-Fi, mobile networks and Bluetooth.
⚠️ Note: Resetting your network settings will remove all saved Wi-Fi passwords and associated Bluetooth devices. Write down the required passwords in advance so you don't waste time restoring them.
In rare cases, the problem lies in the incorrect work of the GPS-In such situations, cleaning the cache of Google Play services and the system application Google Play Services helps. Find them in the list of applications, go to the storage and click Clear cache».
If none of these methods worked, and the phone stopped detecting location even under ideal conditions, the antenna module may have failed, and this would require a diagnosis at an authorized service center.
