Why Redmi 9βs Wallpaper Carousel is annoying
The Xiaomi Redmi 9 lock screen is equipped by default with a dynamic wallpaper carousel that automatically changes background images, a feature designed to diversify the appearance of the smartphone, often becomes a source of inconvenience, users complain of unpredictable changes in pictures that distract from the main tasks, as well as slowing down the unlock animation due to the loading of new wallpaper.
The problem is especially acute for Redmi 9 owners with limited resources: constantly uploading new images over the Internet can quietly consume up to 150 MB of traffic per month (according to tests on MIUI 12.5). In addition, the carousel often resets user wallpaper settings, returning standard images from Xiaomi.
Method 1: Disconnect via standard MIUI settings
The most obvious method is to use built-in MIUI options, but many users are unaware that the wallpaper carousel is hidden in a separate submenu, rather than in the main personalization section.
- Open the Settings app (cog icon).
- Go to the Lock Screen β Additional settings.
- Find the wallpaper carousel item (can be called Dynamic Wallpaper depending on the MIUI version).
- Move the slider to the off position.
If this item is not available, your firmware version uses an alternative mechanism.
- π Go to Settings. β Wallpaper. β Lock screen and select a static image manually.
- π± Reboot the smartphone after changing the settings (sometimes the changes apply only after the reboot).
- π Update MIUI Up to the latest version through Settings β The phone. β Updating the system.
Check the version of MIUI (Settings β About the phone)
Connect to Wi-Fi to download updates
Backup your current wallpaper (Settings β Wallpaper β Save)
Reboot your phone after the changes-->
β οΈ Note: Some versions of Redmi 9 with firmware MIUI 13+ The item "Wallpaper carousel" may not be available, and this is due to the transfer of the function to the Topic app.
Method 2: Deactivation through the βThemesβ application
Starting with MIUI 12.5, Xiaomi has moved dynamic wallpaper management to a separate Themes app, which works even if the standard settings donβt work:
- Open the Themes app (icon with brush and palette).
- Go to the Wallpaper tab in the lower menu.
- Select the Lock screen β My wallpaper.
- Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select the carousel settings.
- Turn off the option of automatic wallpaper change.
If this menu also does not have the necessary options, then the carousel is controlled by the service com.miui.gallery, in which case only a radical solution will help - disabling the background processes of the gallery (about this in method 4).
| MIUI version | The path to carousel settings | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MIUI 11β12 | Settings β Lock screen β Wallpaper carousel | The slider is stable. |
| MIUI 12.5β13 | Topics β Wallpaper β Settings of the carousel | You may need to update the βThemesβ app. |
| MIUI 14+ | Settings β Personalization β Dynamic wallpaper | Function integrated into general wallpaper settings |
MIUI 11 or lower |MIUI 12β12.5|MIUI 13|MIUI 14 or later |I don't know-->
Method 3: Using the Developer Mode
For advanced users, there is a method to disable the carousel through hidden developer settings, which is guaranteed to work on all versions of Redmi 9, but requires caution:
- Activate Developer Mode: Go to Settings β About Phone. 7 times click on the MIUI Version before the notification βYou became a developerβ appears.

USB debugging
adb shell settings put global lock_screen_wallpaper_enabled 0This command completely disables the dynamic wallpaper on the lock screen. To return the standard behavior, replace 0 with 1. ADB-commands you donβt know, use an alternative method with the Activity Launcher app:
- π± Install Activity Launcher from Google Play.
- π Find the activity list com.android.themes or com.miui.themes.
- π οΈ Start an activity called WallpaperSettingsActivity.
- π Manually disable all options related to the carousel.
π‘
Before use ADB-Make sure that Xiaomi drivers are installed on the PC USB Drivers and platform-tool tool from Android SDK. Without them, the commands will not be fulfilled.
Method 4: Radical solution β disabling background processes
If previous methods fail, it is necessary to force the services responsible for changing the wallpaper, which is an extreme measure, as it can affect the operation of other functions (for example, automatic synchronization of topics).
- Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Find and open the Themes app (com.miui.themes).
- Choose the Battery. β Background activity management.
- Set a limit to prohibit background activity.
- Go back and press Stop (forced stop).
Do the same for the applications:
- πΌοΈ Gallery (com.miui.gallery) β responsible for downloading new wallpaper.
- π Theme loader (com.xiaomi.midrop) β manages network updates.
β οΈ Attention: After the forced stop of services, Themes may stop updating not only wallpaper, but also system fonts / icons. To return functionality, reset the application settings through Settings β Annexes β Topics β Warehouse β Clear the data.
What if after the service stops, the wallpaper is completely gone?
Method 5: Installation of a third-party launcher
If the software doesn't work, you have to replace the standard launcher with an alternative one, which will change not only the lock screen, but the entire Redmi 9 interface.
- π± Nova Launcher β supports customization of the lock screen through plugins.
- π¨ Action Launcher β has built-in settings to disable dynamic elements.
- β‘ Lawnchair is a lightweight open source launcher, without advertising and background processes.
Instructions for setting:
- Install the selected launcher from Google Play.
- In the launcher settings, find the Lock Screen or Security section.
- Turn off the option Dynamic Wallpaper or MIUI System Wallpaper.
- Set the static image manually.
The downside to this method is that it loses some of the MIUI features, such as quick notifications on the lock screen or control gestures, but this is the only way to completely get rid of the carousel if it is hard-wired into the firmware.

The launchers don't physically remove the wallpaper carousel, they just cover it with their interface, and when you go back to the standard MIUI launcher, the problem will come back.
Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
When trying to remove the carousel, users often face typical problems, and here are the most common ones and ways to solve them:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| No "carousel wallpaper" item in the settings | Outdated or modified firmware | Update MIUI or use the ADB method |
| Wallpaper is reset after resetting | Resetting the cache of the "Themes" application | Clean these apps Themes and install wallpaper again |
| ADB-command fails | No debugging rights | Check the enabled debugging over USB and drivers |
| Carousel returns after MIUI update | Resetting user settings | Repeat the shutdown via βThemesβ or developer |
Another common mistake is the confusion between desktop wallpaper and lock screen, which is managed separately in MIUI:
- π₯οΈ Desktop wallpaper is configured in Settings β Wallpaper. β Main screen screen.
- π Lock screen wallpaper - in Settings β Wallpaper. β Lock screen or through the Topics app.
