What is T9 and how does it work on modern smartphones?
T9 (Text on 9 keys) technology was developed by Tegic in 1995, and allowed you to type on a button phone using a digital keyboard. Instead of repeatedly pressing a single button (as in ABC mode), the user pressed the key once, and the system selected a word from the dictionary, for example, for the word "hello" it was enough to type the sequence 7-7-7-4-3-3-8.
On Xiaomi smartphones running Android (including MIUI 14 and later), the T9 is implemented in two ways:
- 📱 Virtual T9-keyboard – emulation of button input on the touch screen (through third-party applications).

- Set up auto-replacement — add frequently used words and abbreviations to the keyboard dictionary, for example, instead of "SPS," you can set the automatic replacement to "thank you."
- Use gestures – in some cases T9-Keyboards (such as Old School Keypad) support swipes to quickly remove characters.
- Activate the vibration, which will help you feel the taps when you're blindly dialing, and you can set it up in the keyboard settings.
- Sync the dictionary – If you use T9 on multiple devices, export the custom dictionary through Settings → Backup.
For owners of the POCO F5 or Xiaomi 13 with MIUI 14, there is a hidden feature, a one-hand mode, which can be combined with the T9 for even greater convenience.
