Remote from Xiaomi Mi Box, Mi TV Or did you buy a new device and the remote doesn't want to sync? This problem is familiar to many owners of Xiaomi equipment - especially after resetting, updating firmware or replacing batteries. 80% of the time, the decision takes no more than 5 minutes if you know the right algorithm.
In this article, we will discuss all possible ways to connect the remote to Xiaomi consoles (including the Mi Box S, Mi Box 4, Mi Box 4, and Xiaomi models). TV Stick and Mi TV Cube, and we'll tell you what to do if the standard synchronization doesn't work:
- ๐น How to connect a remote via Bluetooth (the main method for most models)
- ๐น How to configure an IR port for older remotes (e.g. Mi Remote Controller)
- ๐น How to use a smartphone instead of a remote via the Mi Remote app
- ๐น What to do if the console does not see the remote even after resetting
It doesnโt matter if youโve had a problem after an Android update. TV or simply lost the instruction โ our step-by-step guides will help to regain control of the console without contacting the service.
1. Determine the type of remote: Bluetooth or IR?
Before you try to connect a remote, you need to understand what type of connection you have, and that's what the whole algorithm depends on. Xiaomi has two main types of remotes:
- ๐ถ Bluetooth remotes (most modern models: Mi Box S, Mi) TV Stick 4K, Mi TV Cubes operate at 2.4 GHz, require a set-top box interface, typically have a minimalist design without an IR window.
- ๐ฆ IR panels (old models: Mi Box 3, some versions of Mi Box 4) use an infrared port, do not require pairing, but need a line of sight consoles.
How to distinguish them visually:
| Sign. | Bluetooth remote | IR remote |
|---|---|---|
| Presence of an IR window | โ No. | โ There is (transparent or semi-transparent) |
| Activation button | โ Aye (often with backlighting) | โ No (or only works when direct guidance is provided) |
| Work without the appearance of the prefix | โ Yes. | โ No (must be directed to the IR receiver) |
| Confix models | Mi Box S, Mi TV Stick, Mi TV Cube | Mi Box 3, Mi Box 4 (early versions) |
If you're not sure what remote you have, try pressing any button and flashing it on your smartphone camera (turn it on in shooting mode). If you see the IR flicker, it's an infrared remote. If you can't see anything, it's probably Bluetooth.
2. Connecting Bluetooth remote to Xiaomi console
This is the most common scenario, as most of todayโs Xiaomi consoles use wireless remotes, and pairing takes less than a minute if done correctly.
Make sure that the remote has working batteries (or it is charged)
Place the remote at a distance of not more than 1 meter from the console
Disable other Bluetooth devices nearby (earphones, keyboards)
Reboot the console if the remote has not previously reacted-->
Step 1: Activate the pairing mode on the remote
Most Xiaomi Bluetooth remotes have a hidden combination to put into search mode.
- ๐ Press the Menu buttons simultaneously + OK 5-7 seconds until the indicator flashes (if any).
- ๐ On the remotes with the Power button, press it with Back for 10 seconds.
- ๐ For Mi. TV Cube: Press and Hold the Microphone + Volume Down.
If the indicator on the remote starts flashing blue (or green), it's ready to pair. If there's no indicator, just move on to the next step.
Step 2: Connect the remote via the console menu
If the console is responding to other remotes (or you have a mouse/keyboard), do:
- Go to Settings โ Devices โ Bluetooth.
- Select Add a new device.
- In the list, find a device called Mi Remote, Xiaomi RCxxx or the like.
- Confirm the conjugation (if required). PIN, Try 0000 or 1234).
If the console does not respond to anything, use the emergency method:
- ๐ Turn off the power for 30 seconds, then turn it on again.
- ๐ Immediately after download, press on the Menu remote. + OK 10 seconds.
- ๐ The console must automatically detect the remote within 20 seconds.
๐ก
If the console can't see the remote, try connecting it through the Mi Remote app on your smartphone (more on this below).
Step 3: Checking the performance
After successful connection:
- โ Press. OK โ There must be an audible signal or vibration.
- โ Check the Volume, Home, Back buttons.
- โ If some of the buttons donโt work, try updating the remoteโs firmware (see section 5 for more).
โ ๏ธ Note: If the remote is connected but shuts down again after a few minutes, the problem may be with the discharged batteries (even if they are new!). Try replacing them with alkaline (for example, Duracell) - cheap cells often do not provide enough current for the Bluetooth module.
3. IR remote setup for old Xiaomi consoles
If you have a Mi Box 3 or some other model with an infrared port, the connection process is easier โ you don't need to pair it. But there are some nuances.
Step 1: Checking the IR receiver on the console
Make sure that:
- ๐ On the front panel of the console there is an IR receiver (a small transparent window).
- ๐ซ Nothing is closed by the receiver (for example, decorative panel or dust).
- ๐ The distance between the console and the console is not more than 5 meters.
If the IR receiver is damaged (for example, after a fall), the remote will not work, in which case only the replacement of the receiver or switching to a Bluetooth remote is left.
Step 2: Software setting (if the remote does not work)
Sometimes the IR panel stops working after the firmware update, to get back the functionality:
- Go to Settings โ About the console โ System update.
- Check for updates. If you have, install them.
- If there are no updates, reset your settings (in the same menu).
After resetting, the IR remote must work automatically - no additional settings are required.
Step 3: Verification of the IR signal encoding
In rare cases, the remote can send a signal in the wrong format, to fix this:
- ๐ง Install the application on the smartphone IR Universal Remote (or similar).
- ๐ฑ Choose your console model (Xiaomi Mi Box) 3/4).
- ๐ Try sending a test signal through your smartphone, and if the console responds, the problem is in your remote.
โ ๏ธ Warning: If the IR panel stopped working after replacing the batteries, check their polarity! Incorrect installation can lead to short circuit and failure of the remote control.
4.Using a smartphone instead of a Xiaomi remote
If the main remote is lost or broken, you can temporarily control the console via your smartphone, and the official Mi Remote app or third-party solutions will do this.
Method 1: Mi Remote (for Android/iOS)
This is the most reliable solution, as it supports all Xiaomi console models.
- Download Mi Remote from Google Play or App Store.
- Turn on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth (depending on the model).
- Launch the application and select Add Device โ Android TV โ Xiaomi.
- Follow the instructions on the screen for pairing.
The annex supports:
- โ Wi-Fi control (if the console and phone are on the same network).
- โ Control via Bluetooth (need to pair).
- โ Voice input (for models with microphone).
Method 2: Universal remotes (for iOS/Android)
If Mi Remote is not suitable, try alternatives:
- ๐ฑ Google TV Remote (officially from Google, works via Wi-Fi).
- ๐ฑ Yatse: Remote for Android TV (Extended functions, support for voice commands).
- ๐ฑ Unified Remote (Unified Remote for All Devices).
To connect through these applications:
- Make sure that the console and phone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Enable the option in the settings of the consoles ADB debugging (Settings) โ About the prefix โ Android Version โ Click 7 times on the line with the version, then go back and find Developer Settings).
- Run the app on your phone and select your console from the list.

Method 3: Voice control via Google Assistant
If you have a Google Nest or other smart speaker with Google Assistant, you can control the voice box:
- ๐ค Say, OK, Google, turn on the Xiaomi Mi Box".
- ๐ค Or, โOK, Google, launch Netflix on Android.โ TV".
For this:
- Make sure that the console and speaker are connected to the same Google account.
- In the settings of the consoles, turn on Google Assistant (Settings) โ Devices โ Google Assistant).
5. Problem Solving: The remote does not connect
If none of these methods worked, don't rush to buy a new remote. 90% of the time, the problem is solved by one of the methods below.
Problem 1: The remote is not detected when pairing
Possible causes and solutions:
- ๐ Replace them with new batteries (preferably alkaline batteries).
- ๐ก Interference from other devices โ disable nearby Bluetooth headsets, keyboards, mice.
- ๐ Bluetooth module failure โ reboot the console by holding the power button for 15 seconds.
- ๐ ๏ธ Outdated firmware - update the console through Settings โ Updating the system.
Problem 2: The remote is connected but not working
If the pairing is successful, but the buttons do not respond:
- ๐ Reconnect the remote (remove it from the list of Bluetooth devices and add again).
- ๐ง Reset the remote settings: pinch Menu + Volume Up for 10 seconds.
- ๐ฑ Check if the remote is in conflict with other devices (e.g. Mi Band or Redmi Buds).
Problem 3: The console does not respond to anything
If the console does not turn on or does not respond to any remotes:
- ๐ Check the power supply - try another cable or socket.
- ๐ Perform a hard reset: Press and hold the Reset button on the back of the console (you need a paper clip or toothpick).
- ๐ป Connect the device to the monitor through HDMI โ Maybe there's a problem with the TV.
โ ๏ธ Note: If after a hard reset, the console requires the username / password from Mi Account, and you do not remember it, restore access through the account.xiaomi.com website!
Problem 4: The remote works, but with delays
If the buttons are delayed:
- ๐ถ Check if there is any interference from the Wi-Fi router (switch it to channel 1, 6 or 11 in the settings).
- ๐ Replace batteries with more powerful ones (e.g. Eneloop).
- ๐ Turn off the energy saving mode on the console (Settings) โ Screen and sound โ Sleeping mode).
๐ก
If the remote started to glittle after updating the firmware, try to roll back to the previous version via Recovery Mode.
6. Update of Xiaomi remote firmware
Few people know, but Xiaomi remotes also have their own firmware that can be updated, which helps fix bugs with connection, delays and broken buttons.
Step 1: Check the current version of the firmware
To find out the remote firmware version:
- Connect the remote to the console.
- Go to Settings โ Devices โ Bluetooth.
- Find your remote in the list and click on it.
- Look at the version of the software (for example, V1.2.345).
Step 2: Finding Updates
The firmware update is automatically done with the console update, but if you want to force checks:
- ๐ Go to Settings. โ About the prefix โ Updating the system.
- ๐ Click Update Checker.
- ๐ฅ If there is an update for the remote, it will be installed along with the console firmware.
If the automatic update doesnโt work, try:
- ๐ Turn off the console from the network for 1 minute, then turn on.
- ๐ Press on the Menu remote. + OK 10 seconds to reset your settings.
- ๐ฅ Check the updates again.
Step 3: Manual Update (for experienced users)
If the automatic method does not work, you can try to update the firmware of the remote manually through ADB.
For this:
- Install the Android SDK Platform-Tools on your PC.
- Connect the console to the PC by USB (turn on ADB debugging as described above).
- Open the command line and type: Adb devices Make sure your console appears in the list.
- Download the firmware for the remote (for example, from the forum) 4PDA) And then you can use it with a command: adb push. firmware.bin /sdcard/ adb shell su -c"dd if=/sdcard/firmware.bin of=/dev/block/by-name/remote"
โ ๏ธ Warning: Incorrect firmware of the remote can lead to its complete inoperability. If you are not sure of your actions, it is better to wait for the official update via the console.
7. Alternative remotes for Xiaomi Mi Box
If your home remote is permanently broken or lost, you can use alternatives.
Option 1: Universal Bluetooth remotes
Any Bluetooth remote with Android support TV It's good for Xiaomi Mi Box:
- ๐ฎ Xiaomi Mi Game Controller (supports voice input and vibration).
- ๐ฎ Firefly RK3328 (full-size).
- ๐ฎ WeChip G20 (backlit and touchpad).
How to connect:
- Enable pairing mode on the alternative remote (usually the Pair button).
- Go to Settings โ Devices โ Bluetooth.
- Select a new remote from the list.
Option 2: IR remotes with support for Xiaomi
If your console supports IR, you can use universal remotes:
- ๐บ Xiaomi Mi Universal Remote (works with most set-top boxes and TVs).
- ๐บ BroadLink RM4 Pro (with voice control support).
Setting:
- Download the remote app (e.g. BroadLink).
- Add the Xiaomi Mi Box from the list.
- Follow the instructions for learning buttons.
Option 3: Keyboard and mouse
If you are more comfortable with the keyboard:
- โจ๏ธ Any Bluetooth keyboard (e.g. Xiaomi Bluetooth Keyboard).
- ๐ฑ๏ธ Wireless mouse (via Bluetooth or via Bluetooth) USB-receiver).
To connect:
- Turn on the keyboard/mouse search mode.
- Go to Settings โ Devices โ Bluetooth.
- Select the device from the list.
๐ก
If you often use a set-top box to type text (for example, in a browser), a keyboard with a touchpad (touchpad) will be much more convenient than a remote.
