Recording phone conversations on Xiaomi smartphones is a useful feature for business negotiations or storing important information, but not all users need it. Many people face situations where the recording is turned on accidentally, takes up the deviceβs memory or causes embarrassment for the interlocutors, and in some countries recording conversations without the consent of the second participant can violate privacy laws.
In this article, we will discuss all the current ways to disable call recording on Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO phones, from standard MIUI settings to hidden settings and third-party utilities. Instructions will be suitable for models from 2020 to 2026, including Xiaomi 13/14, Redmi Note 12/13 and POCO F5/X5.
Why Xiaomi is recording conversations without your knowledge
The MIUI call recorder is not only manually activated, but there are several reasons why your phone can save calls automatically.
- π Update: After installing the new version MIUI Record settings can be reset to default values (in some regions - with automatic writing enabled).
- π± Third-party apps: Messengers like Truecaller or Cube Call Recorder can integrate into the system and record calls in the background.
- π‘ Regional Features: On devices for India, Pakistan or China, recording is often turned on by default due to local security laws.
- π€ Google Assistant: If you have given permission to access the microphone, the assistant can save snippets of conversations to "improve services".
Another common cause is a sync error with the Mi Cloud, where if you previously turned on the record and then turned it off, the settings might not be saved due to a failure, in which case a forced call reset (we will talk about this in the corresponding section) helps.
Method 1: Disable recordings via standard MIUI settings
The easiest method is to use the built-in tools of the system. The interface may vary slightly depending on the version of the MIUI (12-14) and the phone model, but the general logic is maintained:
- Open the Phone app (the tube icon on the home screen).
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner and select Settings.
- Go to the section Recording conversations (or Call Recording in English firmware).
- Turn off the Automatic Recording switch (if it is active).
- Make sure that the Exclusions section does not contain unnecessary contacts or numbers for which entry is allowed.
On some devices (e.g. Redmi Note 11 with MIUI 13), the path may look different:
Phone β Settings β Additional β Recording conversationsOpened the phone app"|Found the "Translation of Conversations" section"|Turned off the automatic recording.|Checked the exception list.|Reboot the phone (if desired)-->
If your MIUI version does not have an explicit "Recording conversations" clause, try an alternative path:
Settings β Applications β Application Management β Phone β Permissions β MicrophoneHere you can completely deny the phone application access to the microphone, but this will also disable the ability to use hands-free communication.
Method 2: Delete recorded conversations and clean up memory
Even after the recording function is disabled, the old files continue to occupy space in the phone's memory, and can be found and manually deleted:
- Open the Files app (or any file manager).
- Go to the folder. MIUI/sound_recorder/call_rec. On some devices, the path may be Recordings/Call.
- Select unnecessary files (usually in.amr or.mp3) and delete them.
If the folder doesn't show up, turn on the hidden files in the file manager settings. Alternative way is to search by file name: type in the search bar call_rec record.
π‘
To make room, use the built-in Cleanup utility (the broom icon in the settings menu). Select Audio category and delete unnecessary entries.
| File type | Expansion | Where it's stored | How to remove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Call records (MIUI) | .amr, .mp3 | MIUI/sound_recorder/call_rec | Manually or through "Cleanup" |
| The Truecaller Records | .3gp, .mp4 | Android/media/com.truecaller/ | Through the Truecaller settings |
| Cash Google Assistant | .ogg, .opus | Android/data/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox/ | Cleaning the application data |
β οΈ Note: If you use Mi Cloud for backup, call records can sync to the cloud. To delete them from there, go to i.mi.com, select the Records section and manually clean it.
Method 3: Disable recording through the engineering menu (for advanced)
If standard settings donβt work, you can use the Engineering Mode, a method that requires caution, as incorrect actions can disrupt the phone.
- Open the phone app and enter the combination: ##4636##
- In the menu that opens, select Phone Information (or Phone Information).
- Scroll down to the Turn off call recording (or similar) section.
- Press the disconnect button and restart the device.
On some models (e.g. POCO F4), the path may differ:
##36446337##After entering this code, the EMMC Test menu will open, where you can find recording options in the Audio section.
What to do if the engineering menu is not opened?
β οΈ Attention: changing the parameters in the engineering menu can cause a malfunction of the communication module. If after manipulation the network is lost or calls stop working, reset the network settings in Settings β SIM-maps and mobile networks β Resetting settings.
Method 4: Using ADB to completely disable the recording
For users willing to work with Android Debug Bridge (ADB), there is a radical way to disable recording of conversations at the system level. This is true if the feature is enabled at the firmware level and does not turn off through the interface.
You'll need:
- π₯οΈ Computer with installed ADB Tools.
- π± Included debugging by USB on the phone (Settings) β The phone. β Version. MIUI β 7 times to activate the developer mode, then additionally β For developers β Debugging by USB).
- π USB-plug-in.
Next, execute commands in the terminal (command line):
adb shell
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.android.incallui
pm disable-user --user 0 com.miui.voiceassist
pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.server.telecomThese commands disable the standard call app and related services, and then call it through alternative software (like Google Phone) where the default records are disabled. To get it back, use:
pm enable com.android.incallui
pm enable com.miui.voiceassistπ‘
ADB-It's suitable for power users, and if you're not sure what you're doing, use standard settings or contact a service center.
Method 5: Third-Party Applications for Record Management
If the built-in MIUI tools don't work, you can use third-party utilities that offer more flexibility, such as writing only for selected contacts or automatically deleting old files.
Popular applications:
- π Cube Call Recorder ACR: Supports cloud storage, record encryption and integration with Google Drive. minus β shows ads in the free version.
- π Call Recorder by Lovekesh: simple interface, recording format.mp3 It's controlled bitrate, it works without root rights.
- π‘οΈ Automatic Call Recorder: allows you to configure contact exceptions and automatically delete records beyond a predetermined deadline.
To completely disable the recording through these applications:
- Open the settings of the selected application.
- Find the Recording Rules section or Recording Settings.
- Turn off the Auto-record call (or similar) option.
- Remove the app if it is no longer needed (via Settings β Apps).
β οΈ Note: Some call recording applications (such as Truecaller) continue to work in the background even after the main call is removed. APK. To fully deactivate them, clear the data and cache in Settings β Annexes β Truecaller β Warehouse.
What to do if call recording is enabled at the firmware level
On devices in some regions (such as India or China), call recording can be stitched into firmware and not disabled in standard ways.
- Change the firmware region: Go to Settings β Additional β Region. Choose Russia, Europe or Global (depending on the options available). Reboot your phone.
- Installing custom firmware (e.g. Pixel Experience or LineageOS) is a radical method that requires unlocking the bootloader and potentially devoid of warranty.
- Contact the service center: if the phone is purchased in the official Xiaomi store, you can request a flashing on the βcleanβ version of MIUI without pre-installed regional features.
Before changing your firmware region, back up your data via Settings β Additional β Backup and Reset. Some users also recommend using the Mi Flash Tool app for manual flashing, but it requires technical skills.
