Why screen recording on Redmi 9 can work without your knowledge
Xiaomi Redmi 9 has a built-in screencasting feature that can be activated by default by accident β through a notification panel, gestures or even third-party apps. Many users are faced with the fact that the recording turns on itself during games, watching videos or calls, which leads to undesirable consequences from overheating of the device to leakage of confidential data.
The feature of MIUI (Xiaomi firmware) is that the screencast feature is integrated deep into the system and can be launched not only manually, but also on request of some applications (for example, instant messengers for streams or banking services for verification). Moreover, Redmi 9 does not have a separate switch to completely disable recording β it must be blocked through several menus at the same time.
In this article, weβll look at all the ways you can turn off screen recordings, from standard settings to hidden developer settings, and how to prevent apps from using screencasts in the background. If you notice that your phone has started recording screens spontaneously, or just want to protect your privacy, follow the instructions below.
Method 1: Disconnect via the notification panel (fast method)
The most obvious, but not always effective, way is to remove the screen record button from the notification panel, which will prevent accidental clicking, but will not block the function completely (it can still be run through settings or applications).
How to do this:
- π± Turn the notification bar swipe down from the top edge of the screen.
- π Find the Screen Record icon (usually a circle with a dot inside or a video camera icon).
- π±οΈ Press and hold the icon, then drag it up to the Unused section (or tap on the pencil to edit the panel).
- π Confirm the changes by clicking "Done".
β οΈ Note: This method does not disable the recording function itself, but only removes fast access.

If the screen recording button has disappeared from the panel, but the function is still activated, check Settings β Special features β Quick settings β sometimes the switch is duplicated there.
Method 2: Completely disable via MIUI settings
To permanently disable screen recording on Redmi 9, you need to deactivate the feature in system settings. This method works on all versions of MIUI (including MIUI 12/13/14), but the path to the menu may vary slightly.
Instructions:
- Open the settings (cog on the desktop).
- Go to Additional Settings β Screen Recording (or System and Device β Screen Recording in New Versions).
- Turn off the "Allow Screen Recording" slider.
- In the window that appears, confirm the action by clicking "Disable".
After that, the built-in screencast feature will be blocked, but some applications (such as Zoom or Discord) may request permission to write through their own mechanisms.
Make sure the screencast button is gone from the notification bar |
Try running the recording via Settings β Screen recording (disable notification should appear)|
Check if apps request permission to write (e.g. when logging into a Zoom conference)|
Reboot your phone to make the changes take effect-->
Method 3: Blocking permissions for applications
Even if you have disabled the built-in screen recording, some apps (especially instant messengers, banking services, or games) may have their own screencast modules. To prevent them from recording the screen, you need to manually revoke permissions.
How to do this:
- π§ Open the Settings. β Annexes β Application management.
- π Select the app you suspect of recording the screen (such as TikTok, WhatsApp, or Google Meet).
- π Go to the "Permissions" section".
- π« Find the option "Screen Record" or "Overlaying on top of other windows" and turn it off.
For convenience, you can use the filter: in the Application Management section, click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select "Resolutions", then find "Screen Record" - there will be a list of all applications that are allowed to screencast.
| Annex | Typical use of screen recording | Risk of data leakage |
|---|---|---|
| Zoom/Google Meet | Screen streaming during conferences | Medium (can record everything you show) |
| TikTok/Likee | Creating video from the screen for streams | High (may collect data about your activity) |
| Banking applications | Identity verification (recording the screen to confirm transactions) | Critical (access to financial data) |
| Games (PUBG, Free Fire) | Recording gameplay for streams | Low (usually only records the game) |
β οΈ Note: Some banking applications (e.g. SberBank Online or Tinkoff) may require screen recording permission to confirm payments. In this case, it is better to use alternative methods of verification (SMS, biometrics).
Method 4: Disconnect via Developer Modes (for power users)
If standard methods don't work, you can block screen recording through the developer menu, which is suitable for advanced users, because it requires activation of hidden settings.
Steps:
- Activate Developer Mode: Go to Settings β About Phone. Click on MIUI Version 7 times in a row until the notification βYouβve become a developer!β appears.
- Return to Settings β Additional settings β For developers.
- Find the USB Debugging option and turn it on (this is temporary, to access hidden settings).
- Scroll down and turn off: "Allow Screen Recording" (if any); "Tap Display" (may interfere with locking); "Do not turn off the screen" (sometimes interferes with screencast deactivation).
Reboot the phone.
Important: After you turn off screen recordings through developer mode, some system functions (such as mirroring on TV or using Mi Share) may not work properly. If critical, return settings to their original state.
What if the developer mode does not save the settings?
Method 5: Using third-party applications to block
If the built-in methods don't work, you can use third-party utilities that force you to block access to the screencast function.
- π‘οΈ App Ops allows you to control application permissions in detail, including screen recording. Requires root rights for full control.
- π Island (Sandbox) β creates an isolated environment for applications where screen recording is blocked by default.
- π± MacroDroid β Automates disabling screencast when running certain applications (for example, banking).
Example of MacroDroid configuration:
- Install the app from Google Play.
- Create a new macro with the trigger βRun the Appβ (select the one that requests screen recording).
- Add the action "Disable Screen Recording" (if available) or "Close App".
- Save the macro and activate it.
β οΈ Note: Apps like App Ops may conflict with MIUI, before using, back up the data through the Settings β Additional settings β Backup and reset.

Yeah, but rarely.|
No, never.|
I don't know how to check that out.-->
What to do if the screen recording still works
If none of these methods worked, the problem may be:
- π Firmware failure - try updating MIUI Up to the latest version through Settings β The phone. β Updating the system.
- π¦ Viruses or spyware β scan your phone with Malwarebytes or Dr.Web Light.
- π§ Damaged system files β reset to factory settings (Settings) β Additional settings β Backup and reset β Resetting settings).
If you suspect a virus:
- Go to Safe Mode (press the power button β hold βSwitch offβ β select βSafe Modeβ).
- Check if the screen is still recording, and if not, the problem is in the third-party app.
- Remove suspicious programs through Settings β Apps.

If the screen recording is activated even in safe mode, this indicates a hardware malfunction (such as sticking buttons or failure of the display controller).
