Why photos disappear from the Xiaomi gallery
Did you take a picture but can't find it in the standard gallery? Or do you suspect there are hidden files on the phone that you don't know about? On Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones, photos can go missing for several reasons -- and that's not always a system error. Most of the time, files are just moved to hidden folders that aren't displayed by default.
The manufacturer has integrated several mechanisms for hiding content into MIUI, from standard βSecure Storageβ to system folders that are not visible without special settings. In this article, we will analyze all possible places where your βvanishedβ photos and videos can be stored, as well as how to detect them, from simple to advanced.
It's important to understand that if you didn't set up the file hiding yourself, it's likely that it's in one of the system folders, for example, screenshots from some apps (like Telegram or banking services) are automatically saved to secure directories, and photos taken in the Incognito mode of the MIUI camera are stored separately.
Method 1: Checking the βSecure Storageβ MIUI
The most obvious place where hidden files may be located is the built-in Private Safe, a feature available on all Xiaomi smartphones with MIUI 12 and later, which stores not only photos, but also documents, videos, and data from some applications (such as recorded calls).
To gain access:
- π± Open the Files app (yellow folder icon).
- π In the bottom menu, select the Secure Storage tab (may be called Private Safe in English firmware).
- π Enter the password, fingerprint, or pattern lock you used to lock.
- π View the contents β there can be individual files or entire folders.
If you donβt remember the Private Safe password, you can only restore it by resetting your phoneβs settings (this will delete all data!).On some models (for example, Xiaomi 13 Pro or Redmi Note 12), if you enter the password five times incorrectly, the storage is blocked for 24 hours.
π‘
If you often forget passwords, turn on fingerprint sign-in in the Private Safe settings β this will speed up access and reduce the risk of being blocked.
Method 2: Search in system folders through Files
Even if you didn't use Private Safe, the photos could automatically be saved to one of the system folders.
- πΈ DCIM/.thumbnails β Photo and video miniatures (sometimes copies of deleted files remain here).
- π MIUI/Extra β Additional media files created by the system (e.g. screenshots from games).
- π Pictures/Screenshots β screenshots, but sometimes photos from social networks also fall here.
- π Android/data β files from apps (for example, saved stories from Instagram or VK).
To see the hidden folders:
- Open the Files app β click on the three dots in the upper right corner β Settings.
- Activate the option to show hidden files.
- Go back to the root directory (/storage/emulated/0/) and manually check the folders from the list above.
How to distinguish a system folder from a virus?
Note that some folders (such as Android/data) may be empty if you didnβt give apps permission to save files, and DRM-protected files (such as screenshots from Netflix or banking apps) will not be displayed here.
Method 3: Using Incognito Mode in the Camera
Starting with MIUI 13, the standard Camera app introduced Incognito (or Secret Mode on Russian firmware) mode, and all photos taken in this mode are automatically saved to a separate secure folder and are not displayed in the main gallery.
To find these pictures:
- Open the Camera app.
- Swipe your finger across the screen from left to right (or click on the icon). ποΈ top-down).
- Enter. PIN-use the code or biometrics (if requested).
- At the bottom of the screen will appear tab Incognito β here are stored all the hidden photos.
If you don't remember PIN-code from Incognito mode, it can be reset via camera settings, but it will delete all files from this folder! on some models (e.g., on some models, POCO F5) instead PIN-The code uses a pattern lock.

Method 4: Checking through a computer (for advanced)
If the search on the phone is unsuccessful, connect the smartphone to the computer, which will help you to find files that are not displayed in MIUI due to crashes or firmware limitations.
- π₯οΈ Computer with Windows, macOS or Linux.
- π± Cable USB Type-C (original or certified).
- π§ Enabled Mode File Transfer (MTP) phone-on.
Instructions:
- Connect your phone to your PC and select File Transfer mode in the notification curtain.
- Open This Computer (Windows) or Finder (macOS) β your Xiaomi will appear as a removable drive.
- Go to Internal Storage β DCIM β.thumbnails or MIUI.
- Use extension search: type in the search bar.jpg,.png or *.mp4.
If files are displayed on a PC but not visible on the phone, the problem may be in the gallery cache. Try clearing the Gallery app data in the settings (Settings β Applications β Application Management β Gallery β Storage β Clear Data).
Enable debugging on USB developer-setting|Use the original cable|Check the connection mode (MTP)|Update the drivers ADB if necessary|Backup of important files-->
Method 5: Recover deleted files
If the photos are not just hidden but deleted, you can try to restore them, and specialized applications like:
- π οΈ DiskDigger β scans internal memory for file residues.
- π Recuva (for PC) β works with a connected phone in mode MTP.
- π± Dumpster β creates a βbasketβ for deleted files (you need to install in advance).
Important: the less you use your phone after deleting files, the better the chances of recovery. When you write new data, old files are overwritten.
- Install DiskDigger from Google Play.
- Start a full scan (can take 10 to 30 minutes).
- Mark the photos found and click Restore.
- Save files to the cloud or PC β donβt restore them back to your phone!
π‘
Recovery of deleted files does not guarantee 100% results. The longer it has been since deleting, the lower the odds. It is better to back up regularly in Google Photos or Mi Cloud.
On some models (such as Xiaomi 12T or Redmi K50), the built-in Recycle Bin feature in the gallery stores deleted files for up to 30 days. Check it before using third-party utilities: open Gallery β Albums β Recycle Bin.
Table: Where to look for hidden files depending on the model
| Xiaomi model | MIUI version | Where to look for hidden files | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 13/13 Pro | 14+ | Private Safe, Incognito in the camera | Support for encryption at the hardware level |
| Redmi Note 12 | 13β14 | Secure storage, MIUI/Extra | Screenshots from the games are saved in Pictures/Screenshots/Game |
| POCO F5 | 14 (global) | Hidden Albums at the Gallery | Album Hiding Function Available Without Password |
| Xiaomi 11T | 12.5β13 | .thumbnails, Android/data | Frequent File Display Bugs After Updating |
| Redmi 10A | 12 | Only Private Safe. | No Incognito mode in the camera |
If your model is not in the spreadsheet, look for the MIUI version. For example, on MIUI 12 and below, hidden files are most often stored in Private Safe or system folders, while new options like Incognito have been added to MIUI 14.
What to do if nothing helps
If you have tried all the methods, but you have not found the photos, you may:
- π Files were synced to the cloud (check Google Photos, Mi Cloud or Yandex.Disk).
- π± The smartphone was connected to another device, and the files were copied without your knowledge.
- π οΈ There was a failure of the file system (will help reset to factory settings, but this will delete all data!).
- π Photos were never saved to your phone (for example, you shot in Professional mode without saving).
On models with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip (such as the Xiaomi 12 Pro or POCO X5 Pro), you can try using ADB to search for files.
adb shell
su
find /storage/emulated/0/ -name ".jpg" -o -name ".png" -o -name "*.mp4"This command will recursively scan all internal memory for media files, and it requires root access or an unlocked bootloader to run it.
π‘
If you are unsure of your ADB skills, you should contact a service center. Wrong commands can lead to data loss or system failure.
β οΈ Note: Some firmware (especially custom) may contain hidden folders that contain critical system files. Do not delete or rename directories with names like miui, system or android, which can cause your phone to fail.
