Xiaomi Redmi 5 is one of the most popular budget smartphones of 2018, which is still in active use. But many owners face the problem: how to take a screenshot on this device if the standard button combinations do not work or the phone is glitzy? In this article, we will discuss all possible ways to create screenshots, from classic to little-known, including solutions for non-standard situations (for example, if the power button does not work).
Redmi 5 (and its Redmi 5A and Redmi 5 Plus) features MIUI, which offers unique screenshot features, and you'll learn how to take screenshots not only with standard methods, but also with gestures, voice assistants, and even through your PC, and we'll also tell you where screenshots are saved and how to find them quickly.
If youโre looking for a way to take a screenshot of Redmi 5 with a broken screen, a dead phone, or no buttons running, youโll find a solution here too. All instructions are validated on current MIUI versions (including MIUI 14) and work even on older firmware.
1. Standard method: "Power + Volume Reduction" buttons
This is the most reliable and versatile method that works on all Xiaomi smartphones, including the Redmi 5. The combination of buttons works even if the phone is slightly laggit or hangs.
How to do this:
- Open on the screen what you want to capture (for example, correspondence in WhatsApp or a page in the browser).
- Press the power button (right) and the volume button (left) at the same time.
- Hold them for 1-2 seconds until you hear the sound of the camera shutter and see the animation of the screenshot.
โ ๏ธ Warning: If the buttons are pressed too long (more than 3 seconds), the smartphone may start to reboot or open the off menu.In this case, just try again, holding the buttons for a short time.
This method works on Redmi 5 with any firmware, including custom ones (like LineageOS or Pixel Experience).
- ๐ Is the battery not discharged (at a charge level below 5%, some functions are turned off).
- ๐ Is the Do Not Disturb mode on (it can block the sound of the screenshot).
- ๐ ๏ธ Are the buttons physically damaged (try pressing them separately).
2. Three-finger gesture: how to turn on and use
MIUI offers a convenient alternative way to take a screenshot, by swiping your three fingers across the screen from top to bottom, which is especially useful if you don't have buttons running or you take screenshots often.
By default, the gesture can be turned off, so you can activate it.
- Open Settings โ Additional functions โ Gestures.
- Find the screenshot with three fingers and switch on the switch.
- (Optional) Here you can configure whether the screenshot will be saved immediately or open for editing.
Now to take a picture:
- Place three fingers (such as index, middle and ring fingers) on the screen.
- Swipe them down from top to bottom in one quick move (as if you were swiping the screen).
- If done correctly, you will hear the shutter sound and see a screenshot notification.
โ ๏ธ Note: The gesture may conflict with other features (e.g., swipe to return to navigation settings). If the screenshot fails, check if other gestures are included in the Settings. โ System system โ Gestures.
Is the gesture enabled in the settings|The screen is not locked.|The fingers touch the screen at the same time.|No conflict with other gestures-->
Advantages of this method:
- โก Faster than pressing buttons (especially with one hand).
- ๐ฏ It works even if one of the physical buttons is broken.
- ๐ผ๏ธ You can take a screenshot of the page you are scrolling (if the option is enabled in the gesture settings).
3. Screenshot via the notification menu (for MIUI 9 and later)
If you're uncomfortable remembering button combinations or gestures, MIUI has a built-in screenshot button right in the notification bar. This works on Redmi 5 with MIUI firmware 9 and higher.
Instructions:
- Open the screen you want to shoot.
- Swipe down from top to top to open the notification bar.
- Find the Screenshot icon (usually it looks like a scissor or a rectangle with lightning). If it's not there, click Edit (pencil in the upper right corner) and add it to the panel.
- Slip the icon - the smartphone will take a screenshot.
This method is convenient when:
- ๐ฆพ You use your phone with one hand.
- ๐ You need to take a screenshot without sound (unlike buttons, this method can work in silent mode).
- ๐ฑ The screen is damaged and gestures are not recognized.
โ ๏ธ Note: Some custom firmwares may not have a screenshot button in the notification bar, in which case try other methods or install the screenshot widget on the home screen (we will talk about this below).
4. Google Voice Assistant or Alice: Screenshot on command
If you have a voice assistant on (Google Assistant or Alice from Yandex), you can take a screenshot with your voice, which is convenient when your hands are busy or the buttons are not working.
For Google Assistant:
- Say, OK, Google, take a screenshot.
- Or, Hey Google, take off the screen.
- The assistant will confirm the team and take a picture.
For Alice:
- Activate the assistant with a button or voice.
- Say, Alice, take a screenshot.
- If the command doesnโt work, check if the voice screenshot option is enabled in Aliceโs settings.
โ ๏ธ Note: Voice commands may not work if:
- ๐ The microphone is turned off or the โDo not disturbโ mode isยป.
- ๐ No Internet connection (some teams require cloud computing).
- ๐ The assistant is not updated (check the version in Google Play).
This method is suitable for Redmi 5 with any firmware, but requires pre-configuring the voice assistant. If you have never used voice control, first activate it in the settings:
Settings โ Google โ Settings Google Assistant โ Voice Assistant5. Screenshot via PC: if the phone doesn't respond to touch
If the Redmi 5 screen doesnโt respond to touch (for example, after a drop or moisture), but the phone turns on, you can take a screenshot via your computer using the ADB (Android Debug Bridge).
What you need:
- ๐ฅ๏ธ Computer with Windows, macOS or Linux.
- ๐ USB-cable (preferably original).
- ๐ฆ Installed drivers Xiaomi and ADB.
Step-by-step:
- Download Platform Tools from the official Android website and unpack the archive.
- Turn on the phone Developer Mode (go to Settings โ About Phone โ MIUI version and tap 7 times on this item).
- Return to Settings โ Additional โ For developers and enable USB debugging.
- Connect your phone to your PC and type in the command line (in the folder with ADB):
adb devices(Your device should be displayed. If not, install drivers.)
adb shell screencap -p /sdcard/screen.pngThis command saves a screenshot in the phone's memory to download it to your PC:
adb pull /sdcard/screen.pngโ ๏ธ Note: If the phone is not detected in ADB, try:
- ๐ Reboot your smartphone and PC.
- ๐ Use the other USB-cable (preferably original).
- ๐ ๏ธ Include in the developer settings Debugging by USB (Security settings) and allow debugging for your PC.
What if the ADB canโt see the device?
6 Where are the screenshots saved and how to find them
By default, all screenshots on Redmi 5 are saved to the folder:
/storage/emulated/0/Pictures/Screenshots/or
/sdcard/Pictures/Screenshots/To find them quickly:
- Open the Gallery app.
- Go to the Screenshots album (usually created automatically).
- Or use any file manager (such as Mi File Manager) and follow the path above.
If screenshots are not saved:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshots don't appear in the gallery | Screenshots folder is hidden or damaged | Restart your phone or create a folder manually through a file manager |
| Screenshots are blank (black screen) | Conflict with MIUI shell or custom firmware | Update the firmware or reset the graphics settings in Settings โ Display |
| Screenshots are kept in low quality | Battery or memory saving mode is enabled | Turn off optimization for the Screenshots app in battery settings |
| No shutter sound. | Do Not Disturb or the systemโs sound is turned off | Check the sound settings in Settings โ Sound and vibration |
โ ๏ธ Note: If you use a microSD, the screenshots are saved by default to internal memory to change the way you save them:
- Install a file manager that supports path change (e.g. Solid Explorer).
- Manually move the Screenshots folder to SD-map.
- Or use the Screenshot Easy app where you can select a folder to save.
๐ก
If screenshots take up too much space, enable compression in MIUI settings: Settings โ Storage โ Free up space โ Compress images. This will reduce the weight of files without severe quality loss.
7. Screenshot of the page being scrolled (long screenshot)
Redmi 5 can screenshot the entire web page or a long chat (e.g., Telegram or VK) even if it doesnโt fit on a single screen.
Method 1: Through the built-in MIUI function
- Take a regular screenshot of any of the above methods.
- Immediately after the notification of the screenshot, tap on it.
- In the editor that opens, the scroll button (or Long Screenshot) will appear at the bottom.
- MIUI will automatically scroll down the page and combine the images into a single file.
Method 2: Through the LongShot application (if the built-in function doesn't work)
- Install LongShot from Google Play.
- Open the app and select Scrolling Screenshot.
- Follow the instructions on the screen (you will need to manually scroll the page).
โ ๏ธ Note: Long screenshots do not work:
- ๐ In some banking applications (due to security restrictions).
- ๐ฎ In games with 3D-graphics (e.g, PUBG Or Genshin Impact).
- ๐บ In video players (for example, YouTube or Netflix).
๐ก
The long screenshot is saved in.png format and can weigh up to 10-50MB depending on the length of the page. To reduce the size, convert it to.jpg through any online converter.
