Mi Account is key to all of Xiaomi’s ecosystem services, from syncing contacts to unlocking the bootloader and managing smart devices. Without it, you won’t be able to use Mi Cloud storage, update your firmware over the air (OTA), or even activate some of the features of Redmi, POCO and Black Shark smartphones. But the sign-up process often raises questions about why SMS doesn’t come, how to confirm email, or what to do if the system requires an old number to be linked.
In this article, we will discuss all the ways to create a Mi Account – through a mobile application, a website, and even without a phone number (using a backup email), separately focusing on the typical errors: “This device is already linked to another account”, “Too many attempts” or “Failed to send a confirmation code.” If you encounter an account lock after buying a used phone or are unable to log in due to a change of the SIM- card, here you will find working solutions.
Why you need Mi Account: 5 key features
Many users mistakenly believe that Xiaomi’s account is only for backup, but it’s actually integrated into every device in the ecosystem, from smartphones to Mi Robot vacuum cleaners to Yeelight lamps.
- 🔒 Device locking in case of theft: Find Device allows you to remotely lock your phone even if the SIM- card is replaced.
- 📱 OTA- Updates: Without an account attached, some firmware (especially for POCO F5 or Redmi Note 12) is not installed.
- ☁️ Cloud storage: 5GB free for photos, notes and backups (including data from Mi Fit for smartwatches).
- 🔄 Device-to-device sync: For example, a Redmi Watch 3 call history will automatically show up in the Mi Fitness app on the phone.
- 🛠️ bootloader Unblock: Without an account, it is impossible to install custom firmware (e.g. LineageOS) or obtain root rights.
Moreover, since 2023, Xiaomi has tightened its security policy: new models (for example, Xiaomi 14 or POCO X6 Pro) require an account to be linked when first enabled, without which some features (for example, Game Turbo or AI Camera) will be blocked.
Method 1: Registration through the Mi Account mobile application
The most reliable method is to create an account directly on a Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO smartphone, which ensures that the device is properly linked to the profile and minimizes the risk of errors.
- Open Settings → Accounts and Sync → Mi Account.
- Click on “Create an Account” (or “Register” in older versions of MIUI).
- Select country/region. For Russia and CIS, it is optimal to specify “Russia” – this will simplify the confirmation of the number.
- Enter a valid phone number (without +7) or email (for example, user@gmail.com).
- Create a password (at least 8 characters, with numbers and letters). Avoid simple combinations like 12345678 - Xiaomi can block such an account.
- Confirm registration via SMS or mail (the link is valid for 24 hours).
If you see a "Too Many Try" error during the confirmation stage, wait for 1 an hour or try another number. Xiaomi limits the number of code requests from one IP- address.
Use official firmware (not custom)
The phone number is not linked to another Mi Account.
Connected mobile data or Wi-Fi
VPN disabled (can block SMS)

⚠️ Warning: If you buy a used Xiaomi phone, be sure to check if it is linked to someone else's account. Go to Settings → About Phone → Mi Account Status. If it shows someone else's email, ask the seller to uncoup the device!
Method 2: Creating an account through a website
If you don’t have a Xiaomi phone or want to sign up in advance, use the official website: account.xiaomi.com. This method is suitable for linking your account to smart devices (such as Mi Band 8 or Mi TV) before you buy them.
Step-by-step:
- Open the site in your browser (Google Chrome or Firefox is recommended).
- Click on “Sign Up” (or “Register” in the Russian version).
- Choose the method of registration: by phone or by email. For Russia, it is better to specify the number, so it is easier to restore access.
- Fill in the fields: Country: Russia (or your region). Phone number: no +7, such as 9123456789. Password: Use a combination of letters, numbers and characters (for example, Xiaomi@2026!).

«Send code»
Confirm the code from the SMS or letter.
After registering, remember to link backup email to your profile settings, which will help restore access if you lose your SIM- card or phone.
| Method of registration | Pluses | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Through the mobile app | Automatic phone linking, fewer errors | Requires a Xiaomi device |
| Through the website | Works on any device, you can register in advance | Sometimes there is no SMS (problems with geolocation) |
| Through Google/Facebook | Quick, don't have to come up with a password. | Limited functionality (for example, you can not unlock the bootloader) |
💡
If you don’t get an SMS when you sign up via the site, try specifying another region (like “Hong Kong” or “Singapore”) – sometimes this solves the code delivery problem.
Method 3: Registration without phone number (only by email)
If you don't have access to the SIM- card or you don't want to link a number, you can only create a Mi Account by email, but you can also keep in mind that this account will have limitations, such as:
- 🔐 Unlock the bootloader on the phone.
- 📱 Restore access via SMS if you lose your password.
- 🛡️ Use the Find Device feature to find a lost phone.
Instructions for registration by email:
- Go to account.xiaomi.com.
- Click "Sign Up" → "Use email."
- Enter a valid email (e.g. user@yandex.ru or user@gmail.com).
- Create a password and confirm it.
- Click on the link from the email (check the Spam folder if the email didn’t arrive).
Important: accounts created only by email are more likely to be blocked by Xiaomi’s security system. To avoid problems, add your phone number to your profile settings after registering.
Common Mi Account Mistakes and Solutions
Even if you follow instructions correctly, users often encounter errors, and let's look at the most common ones and how to fix them:
1. "This device is already linked to another account."
The error occurs if the phone was previously used by another owner and his account was not untied.
- 📱 Ask the previous owner to remove the device from your Mi Account via Settings → Mi Account → Device Management.
- 🔧 If you cannot contact the seller, do a hard reset via Recovery Mode: 1. Turn off the phone. 2. Press Power + Volume up. 3. Select Wipe Data → Confirm.
- ⚠️ If the error persists after the reset, the device is locked at the bootloader level, in which case only the official Xiaomi service (a purchase check is required) will help.
2. "Too many attempts. Try later."
This error occurs if too many registration requests have been sent from one IP- address or phone.
- ⏳ Wait 24 hours and try again.
- 🌍 Change the region in your phone settings (e.g., from "Russia" to "Kazakhstan").
- 📶 Disable VPN or proxies — they can block SMS.
- 📞 Use a different phone number (e.g., a virtual phone number from Google Voice).
3. "Failed to send confirmation code"
The problem is most often caused by an operator blocking an SMS or geo-restrictions.
- 📧 Register by email instead of number.
- 📶 Switch from Wi-Fi to Mobile Internet (or vice versa).
- 🌐 Use another browser (e.g. Microsoft Edge instead of Chrome).
- 📱 Try registering on another device (e.g., a friend's phone).
What to do if your Mi Account is blocked?
How to link your device to your Mi Account after registration
Creating an account is only half the battle, and to use all the features (like Find Device or Mi Cloud), you need to link the device to a profile.
- Open the → Mi Account settings on your phone.
- Sign in to your account (if you haven’t already).
- Go to Device Management (or Mi Cloud → Find the Device).
- Activate options: ☑️ Find the device (for remote locking). ☑️ Data sync (for backup). ☑️ Automatic upload photo (if necessary).
If the device does not appear in the list, check:
- 📶 Internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data must be enabled).
- 🔄 Updates MIUI (older versions have synchronization bugs).
- 📱 Account Rights (in Settings → Applications → Rights Management must be accessed by location and contacts).
💡
Linking the device to the Mi Account is mandatory to unlock the bootloader. Without this, you will not be able to install custom software (for example, TWRP or LineageOS).
Restore access to Mi Account: if you forgot your password or lost the SIM- card
If you have forgotten your password or lost access to the phone number associated with your account, use the recovery function:
- Go to the recovery page: account.xiaomi.com/pass/forgetPassword.
- Enter the email or phone number you used when registering.
- Select the recovery method: SMS if you still have a number; email if you have a backup email; Google/Facebook if you have a social network.
Follow the instructions on the screen (enter the code from the email or answer the check question).
If you do not remember the email/number or the account was created by the previous owner of the phone, contact Xiaomi support via the form: mi.com/global/support/contact/.
Attach:
- 📄 Screenshot from IMEI phone (*#06#).
- 🛒 Check or warranty card (if any).
- 📝 Description of the problem (e.g., “Buyed a used phone, previous owner didn’t untidy the account”).
⚠️ Warning: If you buy a Xiaomi phone from hand, be sure to check if it is untethered from your old account. Otherwise, you will not be able to use the Mi Cloud, update the firmware or unlock the bootloader. The seller must remove the device from their profile before selling!
