Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO automatically store passwords from Wi-Fi networks, apps and websites β but they are not as easy to find as on other brands. Unlike Google Chrome or iCloud Keychain, where the list is available in a couple of clicks, MIUI firmware spreads these data across different menus, and some of them are encrypted. In this article, we will examine all the official and hidden ways to look at passwords on Xiaomi, from standard settings to tools for power users.
It's important to understand that not all passwords can be extracted directly, for example, data from banking applications or messengers (such as WhatsApp or Telegram) are stored in secure containers and not displayed even through system utilities, but Wi-Fi passwords stored in the Mi Browser browser or social network logins are often available without root rights, and we will also explain how to export passwords to a backup file, which can be useful when changing your phone or resetting.
Warning: Attempts to crack someone else's passwords or access data without the permission of the phone owner are punishable by law (Article 272 of the Criminal Code), which is intended only for working with your own device.
1. Wi-Fi passwords: how to look at Xiaomi without root
The easiest way is to look at passwords from stored wireless networks. MIUI This does not require the rights of a superuser, but it will require PIN-code or fingerprint.
Instructions:
- πΆ Open the Settings. β Wi-Fi.
- π Click on the name of the connected network (or select any saved from the list).
- π Slip on the item Show password.
- π Confirm the action with a pattern lock, PIN-code.
If the password is not available, the network is added via WPS or QR-code - in this case, the password is not saved in the system. POCO custom-made firmware (e.g, POCO F5 HyperOS).
π‘
If you frequently connect to new networks, turn on the option of Autoconnect to open networks in the Wi-Fi settings β this will eliminate the need to enter passwords manually.
2. saved passwords in the Mi Browser browser
Mi Browser is a standard browser on Xiaomi smartphones, which by default saves logins and passwords from sites.
Steps:
- Open Mi Browser.
- Slip on three dots in the upper right corner β Settings.
- Go to the Passwords and Forms section.
- Select Saved Passwords and confirm access by fingerprint or PIN-code.
This will show all saved login/password combinations, which can be copied, deleted or exported to.csv (click on the three dots at the top right of the list). Please note that the exported file is not encrypted - keep it safe!
What if Mi Browser doesnβt save passwords?
3. Application passwords: where are stored and how to extract
Xiaomi apps store their passwords in secure storages on Android Keystore or Mi Account, which are restricted, but some of the data can be viewed through Xiaomi account settings:
Method 1: Through Mi Account
- π€ Open the Settings. β Xiaomi account.
- π Go to Security. β Password management.
- π± Apps that have login data saved (e.g. Mi Cloud, Mi Home) will be displayed here).
Method 2: Google Smart Lock (if sync is enabled)
- π Go to passwords.google.com (opens in the browser).
- π Sign in with the same Google account as you do on your phone.
- π Here will be passwords from sites and some applications saved through Google Smart Lock.
Restrictions: passwords from banking applications (SberBank, Tinkoff), instant messengers (Viber, Telegram) or games (Genshin Impact, PUBG Mobile) will not appear here - they can only be restored through the function Forgot the password? in the application itself.
4. Hidden passwords: how to view through ADB (for advanced)
If standard methods donβt work, try extracting passwords through Android Debug Bridge (ADB), which requires USB debugging and basic command line knowledge. Security: donβt use ADB on other devices β this can lead to Mi Account blocking!
Instructions:
- Turn on Developer Mode: Go to Settings β About Phone. Tap 7 times on MIUI Version. Go back to Settings β Additional β Developer. Activate USB Debugging.
adb shell
su
cat /data/misc/wifi/WifiConfigStore.xmlYou'll have encrypted Wi-Fi passwords, and you'll use online services like Wireshark to decrypt it.
Install Xiaomi drivers on PC|Download the platform ADB Google|Enable debugging on USB phone-on|Connect your phone to the original cable (not all) USB-cables support data transmission)|Check that the phone is determined by the adb device command.-->
Warning: Using ADB to extract passwords may violate Xiaomiβs security policy, in some cases resulting in a device lock or Mi Account reset. We recommend this method only for your own devices and for access restoration purposes.
5.Export of passwords for backup
To avoid losing saved passwords when you reset or replace your phone, you can export them to a file.
| Password type | How to export | File format |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Settings β Wi-Fi β Saved Networks β Export (not available on all models) | .conf (requires manual editing) |
| Mi Browser | In browser settings: Passwords and forms β Export | .csv (unprotected) |
| Google Smart Lock | Through the web version of passwords.google.com β Settings β Export | .csv (password protected) |
| Mi Account | No direct export, but data syncs with cloud | β |
Important: Exported.csv files contain passwords in plain form, store them in an encrypted archive (such as.zip with a password), or use password managers like KeePass for secure storage.
π‘
Update your password backups regularly, especially before selling your phone or getting it repaired, and this will keep you from losing access to important accounts.
6.What to do if passwords are not displayed?
If you havenβt found the right passwords through standard methods, check the following points:
- π Sync is disabled: Make sure that in Settings β Xiaomi account β Synchronization enabled Passwords and data.
- π± Third-party password managers: Apps like LastPass or Bitwarden intercept data storage.
- π Encrypted data: On some models (such as Xiaomi 13 Ultra), passwords are stored in encrypted form and require root access to be extracted.
- ποΈ Settings reset: If the phone had previously been reset to factory settings, all locally saved passwords were deleted.
If you use custom firmware (like LineageOS or Pixel Experience), standard MIUI methods may not work.
- Install a password manager (such as Bitwarden) and transfer all data manually to it.
- Use Titanium Backup (requires root) to extract data from system applications.
π‘
If you often forget passwords, set up two-factor authentication (2FA) for important accounts, which will allow you to restore access even without the password saved.
7.Security: How to Protect Your Passwords on Xiaomi
Retrieving passwords is a useful skill, but it's more important to protect them from unauthorized access.
β οΈ Warning: If you are selling or transferring your phone to another person, be sure to reset to factory settings (Settings) β The phone. β Even after deleting your Mi Account, some of the data may remain in the deviceβs memory!
- π Turn off autocomplete for sensitive data (bank applications, instant messengers). This can be done in the settings of each application separately.
- π‘οΈ Use Mi Account to synchronize passwords β data is stored in encrypted form on Xiaomi servers.
- π« Do not keep passwords in notes or SMS β This is the most unreliable way of storage.
- π Update regularly MIUI β New firmware versions eliminate vulnerabilities associated with data leakage.
For maximum security, we recommend using open source third-party password managers (such as Bitwarden or KeePassDX).
- Generate complex passwords.
- Keep the data encrypted.
- Synchronize information between devices.
