Why you need saved passwords and where to look for them
Modern browsers on Xiaomi smartphones automatically offer to save usernames and passwords from sites โ convenient, but not always safe. If you forget the password from a social network, mail or online bank, it can be extracted directly from the browser settings without resorting to recovery via email. However, not all users know where this data is stored and how to export it correctly.
Xiaomi smartphones default to the Mi Browser browser, but many use Google Chrome or other alternatives, and the way they view passwords varies from a simple menu in settings to sync with a Google account. In this article, we will discuss all the current methods for different browsers, including hidden features and security nuances.
It's important to understand that only those who know how to unlock the device's screen have access to the saved passwords, and if the phone is stolen or lost, an attacker can't extract the passwords without your PIN- code, fingerprint, or pattern lock, which is basic protection, but it can be enhanced, and we'll talk about that later.
Method 1: View passwords in Mi Browser (branded browser Xiaomi)
Mi Browser is the standard browser on all Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones. To see the saved passwords, you do not need to install additional applications.
- Open the Mi Browser on your device.
- Slap the icon. โฎ (three points) in upper right corner.
- Select the Settings item โ Passwords.
- Enter. PIN-code, pattern lock or fingerprint to verify identity.
- You'll see a list of sites with logins and passwords saved, and tap on any site to see the details.
If you don't have a password on the menu, you've disabled the save function to activate it.
- ๐ Go to Browser Settings โ Privacy.
- ๐ Enable the option to Save Passwords.
- ๐ฑ Make sure that your smartphone settings allow autocomplete access (Settings โ Additional โ Language and Input โ Autocomplete).

Sync data with Mi Account (optional)-->
One thing about Mi Browser is that passwords sync with Xiaomiโs Mi Account if you have the option enabled, which means that when you reset your phone or reinstall your browser, you can restore data, but if youโre not logged in to Mi Account, the passwords are only stored locally and can be lost.
Method 2: Retrieving passwords from Google Chrome on Xiaomi
Google Chrome is the most popular browser on Android, and on Xiaomi it is often used instead of the standard Mi Browser.
- Open Chrome and tap the profile icon (or โฎ โ Settings).
- Go to the Passwords section (may be called Password Management in newer versions).
- Enter the PIN- code of the device or confirm the identity through biometrics.
- You'll see a list of sites. Tap any one to see your login and password.
Chrome has a few key differences from Mi Browser:
- ๐ Passwords sync with Google Account, not Mi Account, which means you can view them on other devices where you are logged in.
- ๐ There is a built-in password checker that warns of compromised or weak combinations.
- ๐ค Passwords can be exported to a.csv file (more on this in the next section).

I do not save passwords in my browser-->
If you donโt see the Passwords section in Chrome, check:
- ๐ Is the browser updated to the latest version (in Google Play)?
- ๐ Is synced with Google Account enabled (Settings โ Sync).
- ๐ฑ Is autocomplete allowed in Android settings (Settings โ Google โ Autocomplete)
โ ๏ธ Warning: If you delete your Google Account from your smartphone, all synchronized passwords will be erased from your device and can only be restored after you re-authorize.
Method 3: Export passwords to file (backup)
If you want to save all passwords in a safe place (like on a computer or in the cloud), you can export them to a file.
- Open Settings โ Passwords.
- Tap it on. โฎ (three points) in upper right corner.
- Select Export Passwords.
- Confirm the action with PIN- code or biometrics.
- Select the way to save the file (for example, Upload to Google Drive or Save to your device).
The file will be in.csv format and will contain:
- ๐ Site name (URL).
- ๐ค Username (Username)
- ๐ Password.
What to do if the export of passwords is blocked?
There is no export function in the Mi Browser, but you can bypass this restriction:
- Sync your passwords with your Mi Account.
- Log in to account.xiaomi.com from your computer.
- Go to the Data Management section โ Passwords (if available).
โ ๏ธ Warning: A.csv file with passwords is stored in plain view. Never send it by mail or messengers - this can lead to data leakage. Better to save the file in an encrypted archive (.zip with password) or use specialized password managers.
Method 4: View passwords through Android settings (for all browsers)
On Xiaomi smartphones with MIUI 12 and later, there is a universal way to view passwords saved by any browser.
- Open the phone settings.
- Go to Passwords and Security โ Autocomplete.
- Select Passwords (or Password Management).
- Confirm access by using biometrics or PIN-code.
Here you can see passwords from all browsers that use Android autocomplete, but there are some nuances:
| browser | Is it displayed in Android settings? | Synchronization is required |
|---|---|---|
| Mi Browser | โ Yes. | โ No (locally stored) |
| Google Chrome | โ Yes. | โ Yes (with Google Account) |
| Mozilla Firefox | โ No. | โ Yes (with Firefox Account) |
| Opera | โ Yes. | โ Yes (with Opera Account) |
If you donโt see passwords from a browser, check:
- ๐ Whether Autocomplete for this browser is enabled in the Android settings (Settings โ System โ Language & Input โ Autocomplete).
- ๐ Is password storage allowed (Settings โ Applications โ Browser โ Permissions).
๐ก
If you often forget passwords, set up two-factor authentication (2FA) for important accounts. Even if the password is compromised, an attacker will not be able to log in without a second factor (SMS, authenticator application or hardware key).
Method 5: Using Third-Party Password Managers
If the built-in browser tools do not suit you, you can transfer all passwords to a specialized manager, for example:
- ๐ Bitwarden (free and open source).
- ๐ 1Password (paid, with advanced features)
- ๐๏ธ KeePass (offline storage, maximum security).
To transfer passwords from the browser to the manager:
- Export passwords from your browser to.csv (as described above).
- Import the file to the selected manager (most applications have the option of Import in the settings).
- Remove passwords from your browser (optional, for security).
Advantages of third-party managers:
- ๐ Encryption of all data (including notes and bank cards)
- ๐ฑ Cross-platform (access from phone, computer, tablet).
- ๐ก๏ธ Complex password generator and leak checker.
- ๐ Automatic form filling in browsers and applications.
โ ๏ธ Warning: When using third-party managers, disable password saving in browsers to avoid duplication. Otherwise, data may be stored in multiple locations, increasing the risk of leakage.
Security: How to Protect Your Passwords on Xiaomi
Viewing and storing passwords on a smartphone is convenient, but it comes with risks. Here are the key precautions:
- ๐ Use the complex PIN-code (at least 6 digits) or a high-complexity pattern lock.
- ๐ค Set up a biometric (fingerprint or facial recognition), but donโt rely on it alone โ the PIN- code will still be required after the reboot.
- ๐ Regularly update MIUI and browsers โ new versions are closed vulnerabilities.
- ๐ซ Do not install applications from unknown sources โ they can steal autocomplete data.
- ๐ Enable device encryption (Settings โ About Phone โ Encryption).
If you suspect someone has accessed your passwords:
- Change your passwords on all important websites immediately.
- Check active social media and email sessions (Security in account settings).
- Remove the saved passwords from the browser and transfer them to a reliable manager.
- Check your device for viruses using Google Play Protect or Dr.Web.
๐ก
The most reliable way to protect yourself is to disable passwords in your browser and use a separate manager with two-factor authentication, which will eliminate the risk of leakage when you steal a phone or hack a Google/Xiaomi account.
