Why Xiaomi Redmi Note passwords are stored in different places
Xiaomi Redmi Note smartphones (whether Note 10 Pro, Note 12 or earlier) store passwords on multiple systems at once, and this is due to the architecture of MIUI, Xiaomiโs proprietary shell, which is integrated with Google services and the brandโs own solutions. For example, passwords from sites can be stored in Google Password Manager, and data from Wi-Fi can be stored in MIUI settings. This approach complicates search but increases security: if one service is hacked, attackers will not gain access to all your accounts.
Itโs important to understand that on devices with MIUI 12 and later, app passwords (such as those from Instagram or VK) can be encrypted with a reference to a Xiaomi account, not Google. This means that once the phone is reset, they can only be restored through authorization to the Mi Account.
Before searching for passwords, check:
- ๐น Version MIUI (In Settings โ About the phone: the availability of certain methods depends on it.
- ๐น Root rights: without them, some system passwords (for example, from Wi-Fi) can not be seen.
- ๐น Active account Google/Mi: Without authorization, some of the data will be hidden.
Method 1: Viewing passwords in Google Password Manager
The most universal method is to use Googleโs built-in password manager, which works on all Redmi Notes regardless of the MIUI version and does not require additional applications, and stores logins and passwords from sites you saved in Chrome, Mi Browser or other browsers linked to a Google account.
To gain access:
- Open Settings โ Google โ Manage your Google account.
- Go to the Security tab.
- Press Password Manager (or Password Manager in English).
- Sign in if you need to.
You'll see all the credentials you've saved on the list. To see your password, tap the site and select Show Password (you'll need a pin or fingerprint).
Internet connection (data synchronized)
Authorization mainly for Google account
Updated Chrome browser (version no lower than 100.0)
Absence VPN (It can block access to Google services)-->
โ ๏ธ Note: If you previously disabled password sync in Google settings, the data may not be saved. In this case, try other methods from this article.
Method 2: Wi-Fi passwords in MIUI settings
Passwords from connected Wi-Fi networks on Xiaomi Redmi Note are stored in the system settings, but by default they are hidden by asterisks ( โข โข โข โข โข โข โข โข โข โข โข โข โข). To see them, you do not need to get root rights - just use standard MIUI tools or third-party applications.
Method without root:
- ๐ฑ Install the WiFi Password Viewer app (available on Google Play).
- ๐ Run it and give you access to the location (required to scan networks).
- ๐ In the list, find the desired network and click Show Password.
The application reads data from the system file wpa_supplicant.conf, But it does so legally, without breach of security.
Root Method: If you have superuser rights, open /data/misc/wifi/WifiConfigStore.xml via Root Explorer or FX File Manager. Look for lines with <string name="PreSharedKey"> tags - there will be passwords in plain form.
| Method | Root is required. | Works for MIUI. | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| WiFi Password Viewer | โ No. | 11โ14 | Not all networks. |
| Manual viewing wpa_supplicant.conf | โ Yes. | Anybody. | Technical skills are required |
| QR-router | โ No. | Anybody. | Physical access to the router is required |
โ ๏ธ Attention: Redmi Note with MIUI 14 and newer system file wpa_supplicant.conf It can be encrypted, and then even root rights won't help, so you'll have to reset your router or look for a password on another device.
Method 3: System passwords in MIUI (accounts, applications)
MIUI stores some of the passwords in its own storage, which is linked to the Xiaomi account.
- ๐ Data from Mi Account (if you logged in on your phone).
- ๐ฑ Passwords from some system applications (such as Mi Cloud or Themes).
- ๐ฎ Game Accounts (if you have used Game Turbo).
To find them:
- Go to Settings โ Accounts and Sync โ Mi Account.
- Click on your profile and select Account Management.
- In the Security section, find Saved Passwords or Account Information.
Please note that this only shows the data you have explicitly saved in MIUI (for example, when you first logged in to the application), and passwords from third-party services (Vkontakte, Telegram) are not stored here.
How to export passwords from MIUI
โ ๏ธ Warning: If you reset your phone to factory settings without a tied Mi Account, all passwords saved in the system MIUI, They're not going to be retrievable, not even through Xiaomi's support team.
Method 4: Passwords in browsers (Chrome, Mi Browser, Firefox)
Browsers on Redmi Note save passwords regardless of MIUI or Google Password Manager.
1. Google Chrome:
- ๐ Open your browser and tap on โฎ โ Settings โ Passwords.
- ๐ Enter the pin code or use biometrics to confirm.
- ๐ This will show all the logins you saved (๐๏ธ) next to the password to see it.
2. Mi Browser:
- ๐ Launch the browser and go to โฎ โ Settings โ Confidentiality โ Passwords.
- ๐ Sign in with your fingerprint or pattern lock.
- ๐ Passwords are stored in encrypted form and linked to Mi Account. Without it, data is not exported.
3. Mozilla Firefox:
- ๐ฆ Open Firefox, press it. โฎ โ Settings โ Logins and passwords.
- ๐ Enter the master password (if you have installed it).
- ๐ Exports are possible in CSV-file (in settings, enable import/export logins).
๐ก
If you lose passwords often, set up automatic sync in Chrome: go to Settings โ Sync and Google services and turn on the Password option, then the data will be available on any device after you log in to your account.
Method 5: Third-party password managers (Keepass, 1Password, Bitwarden)
If you use third-party password storage apps, the data doesn't get into MIUI or Google's system storage.
For KeePass:
- ๐ฑ Install KeePassDX (or another client) from Google Play.
- ๐ Open the database (file with.kdbx extension) if it is saved on your phone.
- ๐ Enter a master password or use a key file.
KeePass databases are usually stored in /storage/emulated/0/Download/ or in the cloud (Google Drive, Dropbox).
For Bitwarden/1Password:
- ๐ Make sure the app is authorized in your account.
- ๐ Passwords are synced to the cloud, so you can see them on PC.
- ๐ In settings, enable biometric authorization for quick access.
โ ๏ธ Note: If you delete the password manager application but have not exported the data, it will be extremely difficult to recover it, 1Password) Allows you to restore your account through a private key, but only if it was saved separately.
What to do if passwords are not displayed
If you tried all the methods but never found the passwords, the reasons may be:
The synchronization is disabled:
- ๐ Check the Settings. โ Accounts. โ Google โ Synchronization of the account.
- ๐ Make sure that the password option is enabled.
2. Settings reset: If the phone was reflashed or reset, local passwords (such as from Wi-Fi) could be erased, in which case only the router or other device connected to this network will help.
3.Oddated version of MIUI: On Redmi Note with MIUI 10 and below, some of the password manager features may not be available. Update the firmware through Settings โ System Update.
4.Virus Software: Some Trojans block access to system settings. Check your phone through Google Play Protect or Malwarebytes.
๐ก
If passwords are missing after the MIUI update, try rolling back to the previous version via Fastboot or contact Xiaomi Support with the phone model and firmware version.
