Xiaomi smartphones are some of the most popular devices on the market due to their combination of price, performance and functionality. However, even the most reliable gadgets face autonomy problems over time: the battery starts to run out quickly, the percentage of charge jumps, and the phone suddenly turns off with 20-30% of the remaining balance, most often due not to physical wear of the battery, but to the incorrect operation of the power controller – this is where calibration helps.
Battery calibration is the process of synchronizing data between the battery and the smartphone’s power management system. It doesn’t restore capacity (that’s a myth!), but it eliminates software errors that make MIUI or Android misrepresent charge levels. In this article, we’ll discuss how to properly calibrate the battery on Xiaomi Redmi, POCO and Mi, which methods really work and which are a waste of time, and you’ll learn when calibration is useless and what to do in such cases.
Why Xiaomi’s battery is lying: Signs of calibration
Before you start calibrating, make sure the problem is really a software failure, not a physical wear and tear on the battery.
- 🔋 The phone turns off at 15-30% charge, although it used to work up to 0.5%.
- 📉 The percentage of charge “jumps”: for example, from 45% immediately drops to 20% after rebooting.
- ⚡ After charging, the charge level jumps (for example, from 10% to 50% per second).
- 🔄 The battery is discharged unevenly: the first 50% go away in an hour, and the last 20% hold for several hours.
- 📱 In battery settings (Settings) → Battery) displays incorrect operating time.
If any of these signs are on a regular basis, calibration is likely to help, but if the battery is swollen, too hot, or the phone is only 1-2 hours out of the outlet, the problem is the physical wear and tear, and the calibration is powerless, and in such cases, you need to replace the battery.
⚠️ Attention: Calibration does not increase the actual capacity of the battery! It only corrects the errors in the display of charge. If the battery is worn out (for example, its capacity has fallen to 60% of its nominal capacity), the procedure will not return the previous autonomy.
Xiaomi Battery Calibration Methods: Which One Should You Choose?
There are three main ways of calibrating, and their effectiveness depends on the smartphone model and the version of MIUI.
1. Software calibration through the engineering menu
The most reliable method, but requires access to the engineering menu (#4636###) Suitable for most Xiaomi models, except the newest ones (starting with MIUI 14, access may be restricted).
Instructions:
- Open the Phone app and enter the combination ##4636##.
- In the menu that opens, select Battery Information.
- Please note the Battery level parameter.
- Connect your phone to charge and wait 100% (use the original adapter!).
- Turn off charging, restart the device and check the level again in the engineering menu.
- If the values match (e.g. 100% in the system and 100% in the menu), the calibration was successful.
This method works because the engineering menu reads data directly from the battery controller, not from the Android system. If the values differ (for example, in the system 100%, and in the menu 85%), deep calibration is required (see the next section).
Deep calibration (discharge-charge)
The classic method, which even Xiaomi recommends in the official instructions, is suitable for all models, but takes a long time (up to 12 hours), the essence is to completely discharge the battery and then charge it without interruption.
Charge your phone to 100% (use the original cable)
Turn off battery optimization for all applications (Settings → Battery → Optimization)
Turn on the plane mode to avoid background activity
Prepare time: the process will take 8-12 hours-->
Step-by-step:
- Charge your phone to 100% and hold on charging for another 1-2 hours (for stabilization).
- Turn off charging and use your phone as normal until it turns off on its own (don’t manually turn it off!).
- Leave your phone off for 5-6 hours (this is important for resetting the controller!).
- Connect charging and charge not turning your phone on to 100%. Focus on the charging indicator (if any) or wait 3-4 hours.
- Turn on your phone and check the charge level. If it's 100 percent, the calibration was successful.
⚠️ Warning: Don't interrupt the charging process after full discharge! If you turn the phone on to 100%, the calibration will be incomplete and the problem may return in a few days.
Calibration via ADB (for advanced users)
The method for those who are willing to work with ADB (Android Debug Bridge) resets battery data at the system level, but requires a computer and basic command line skills.
Instructions:
- Install. ADB-PC drivers.
- Turn on USB Debugging on your phone (Settings → About Phone → MIUI Version → 7 times click on the version, then go back to Additional Settings → For Developers).
- Connect the phone to the PC and type in the command line:
adb shell
su
rm /data/system/batterystats.bin
rebootAfter the reboot, the battery controller will create a new stat file, which often solves problems with incorrect charging display.
💡
If the phone starts to run out faster after calibrating through ADB, do a deep calibration (method 2) because the system has started collecting new statistics from scratch.
Table: Which calibration method is right for your Xiaomi model
| Xiaomi model | Engineering menu | Deep calibration | ADB-method | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10/11/12, POCO X3/X4/X5 | ✅ Yes. | ✅ Yes. | ✅ Yes. | It is better to combine method 1 and 2 |
| Xiaomi 12/13/14, Mi 11 | ❌ No (limited in) MIUI 14+) | ✅ Yes. | ✅ Yes. | Use method 2 or 3. |
| Redmi 9/9A/9C, POCO M3/M4 | ✅ Yes. | ✅ Yes. | ⚠️ Possible mistakes | ADB may not work on older versions of MIUI |
| Xiaomi Pad 5/6 | ❌ No. | ✅ Yes. | ✅ Yes. | On tablets, it is better to use method 2 |
If your model is not in the table, focus on the MIUI version:
- 📱 MIUI 12 and below: All methods work.
- 📱 MIUI 13–14: Engineering menus may be blocked, use method 2 or 3.
- 📱 HyperOS (MIUI 15+):** only deep calibration (method 2).
Frequent calibration errors and how to avoid them
Many users complain that calibration has not helped or even made things worse, and 90% of the time it is due to typical errors:
- ⚡ Use of a non-original charger: Cheap cables and adapters can cause unstable voltages, causing the battery controller to record incorrect data. Always use an original or certified Quick Charge adapter.
- 🔌 Interrupt the charging process: If you turn off the phone from the socket to full charge (especially with deep calibration), the data will not be completely reset, and the problem will remain.
- 📵 Calibration on cold or hot phone, optimal temperature for the procedure is 15-35°C. If your phone is overheated or cold, wait until the temperature is normalized.
- 🔄 Just in case calibration is frequent, and it's enough to do it every 3 to 6 months or when there's a problem.
Critical error: using Google Play calibration apps (e.g., Battery Calibration) that don’t have access to low-level battery settings and often contain malicious code, only clearing the cache without affecting the actual calibration.
What if calibration doesn’t help?
How to prolong the effect after calibration: tips for battery care
Calibration is temporary, and if you don't keep an eye on the battery, the problems will come back in a few weeks, and here are some proven recommendations from Xiaomi and the experts:
- 🔋 Avoid full discharge. The optimal charge range is 20-80%. Regular discharges to 0% reduce the life of lithium-ion batteries.
- ⚡ Do not use "fast charging" all the time. Quick Charge or Turbo Charging technologies accelerate battery wear. Standard charging is enough for everyday use (5W–10W).
- 🌡️ Keep your phone in the sun, under your pillow, or near heat sources. Optimal operating temperature is 10-35.°C.
- 📵 Disable unnecessary functions. NFC, Bluetooth, GPS and 5G In the background, the battery is severely drained.
- 🔄 Update the firmware. In new versions. MIUI Frequently fix power management errors. Check for updates in Settings → The phone. → Updating the system.
If you use your phone intensively (games, video, navigation), consider buying a powerbank or replacing your battery once every 2-3 years. Xiaomi’s average battery life is 400-500 full charge cycles, after which capacity drops by 20-30%.
💡
Calibration is not a panacea. If the battery is worn out (capacity below 70%), the only solution is to replace it. Check the battery status in the Settings menu → Battery → Battery Status (available on MIUI 12+).
Myths about Xiaomi battery calibration: what not to do
You can find dozens of calibration tips online, most of which are not only useless, but also harmful.
- 🔋 «You need to discharge your phone to 0% every month. "" This was true for nickel metal hydride batteries 20 years ago. The modern lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries that Xiaomi uses don't require "training." Frequent deep discharges only shorten their lifespan.
- ⚡ «Charging the phone to 100 percent. "" On the contrary, charging to maximum speeds up battery degradation. It's optimal to keep the charge in the range of 30-80%.
- 📱 «Battery calibration apps work. "" No application from Google Play can physically affect the battery controller. They just clear the cache or show false statistics.
- 🔌 «You can calibrate the battery through recovery. "" There are no calibration tools on the Recovery Mode menu. The only thing you can do there is reset the settings (Wipe Data), but it doesn't affect the battery.
- 🔄 «Calibration restores the battery capacity. "" No! It only corrects the error in the charge display. If the battery is worn out, it can only be replaced.
If you’ve come across another “miracle method” of calibration, check it out for logic: if it’s not mentioned in Xiaomi’s official instructions or on XDA Developers forums, it’s likely a myth.
