The sound of keys on Xiaomi smartphones can be annoying, especially if you are actively texting or playing. Fortunately, the manufacturer has provided several ways to turn it off, from standard MIUI settings to hidden functions of the engineering menu. In this article, we will discuss all the current methods for Redmi, Poco, Black Shark and other MIUI 12-14 devices.
It is important to understand that keyboards come in two types: system (when typing) and tactile (vibration). We will focus on the audio signals, but we will also show you how to control the vibration output. If you have any questions after reading, check the FAQ section at the end of the article.
1. Standard method: through MIUI settings
The easiest method is to use the built-in system options, which works on all Xiaomi devices regardless of the model and firmware version (unless there were deep custom changes).
Instructions:
- π± Open the Settings app (cog icon).
- π Go to the section Sound and vibration.
- πΉ Find the key sound (or pressing sound in older versions) MIUI).
- βοΈ Move the slider to the off position..
If the keys sound is not in the main menu, try:
- In the same section, touch the sound and vibrations on additional settings.
- Scroll down to the System Sounds block.
- Turn off the option of pressing the keyboard.
Check out the MIUI version (Settings β About the phone)
Make sure the sound is not turned off at the keyboard level (Gboard/SwiftKey)
Restart your phone if the changes donβt apply.
-->
Note: Some firmware (e.g. MIUI Global for the European market) may have different name. If you don't find the right option, read the next section on hidden settings.
2. Disconnect via keyboard settings (Gboard, SwiftKey, Xiaomi Keyboard)
If the system method didnβt work, the problem could be in the keyboard itself. Many Xiaomi users use Gboard (from Google) or SwiftKey (from Microsoft), where the sound is customized separately.
For Gboard:
- π€ Open any field to enter text (for example, in Notes).
- ποΈ Slip the gear icon on the keyboard panel (or hold the comma and select Settings).
- π Go to Settings. β Sound when pressed and turn off the option.
For the standard keyboard Xiaomi Keyboard:
- Press the space on the keyboard and select Settings.
- In the menu, find the sound and vibration.
- Turn off the keys and vibration when pressed (optional).
π‘
If after turning off the sound remained, clear the keyboard cache in Settings β Annexes β Application management β [Keyboard name] β Warehouse β Clear the cache.
3. Hidden settings: engineering menu (for power users)
If standard methods donβt work, you can use the engineering menu (#4636##) which is suitable for advanced users, as incorrect actions can disrupt the device.
Step-by-step:
- Open the phone app and enter the combination: ##4636##
- In the menu that opens, select Audio (or Sound).
- Scroll to the Touch Sounds block.
- Set Off for all fields associated with Keypress.
- Save the changes and restart the phone.
What to do if the engineering menu is not opened?
Important: Changes to the engineering menu may reset after the MIUI update. If the sound comes back, repeat the procedure.
4. Disable audio via ADB (for developers)
If you're familiar with Android Debug Bridge (ADB), you can turn off the keyboard sound at the system level, which is universal and works even on custom firmware.
Instructions:
- Install ADB Tools on PC (you can download from the official Android website).
- Turn on USB Debugging on your phone: Settings β About Phone β MIUI version (tap 7 times to activate Developer Mode). Then: Settings β Additional β Developers β Debugging on USB.
- Connect your phone to your PC and execute the command: adb shell settings put system sound_effects_enabled 0
- To turn off vibrations, use: adb shell settings put system haptic_feedback_enabled 0
π‘
ADB commands are reset after the phone is reset to factory settings. To return sound, replace the 0 by 1 commands.
β οΈ Attention: Misuse of the right ADB It can cause system failures. If you're not sure what you're doing, skip this section.
5 Problems and Solutions: Why doesn't the sound go off?
Sometimes the keys keep sounding even after all the manipulations, so let's look at the typical causes and ways to fix them.
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The sound is turned off in the settings, but remained | Cache keyboards or system sounds | Clear the cache in Settings β Applications β [Keyboard] |
| There is no "Key Sound" item in MIUI | Outdated or custom firmware | Update MIUI or use ADB |
| The sound is only available in certain applications. | Sound settings at the application level | Check the sound settings in the app itself (e.g. in games) |
| After the MIUI update, the sound returned. | Resetting user settings | Repeat the shutdown via settings or ADB |
If none of the methods worked, it may be a hardware failure (for example, a faulty speaker), in which case we recommend contacting the Xiaomi service center.

6. Alternative solutions: quiet mode and third-party applications
If you turn off the sound of the keys does not work, you can go roundabouts:
- π Enable Quiet Mode (quick notification panel) β This will turn off all system sounds, including keys.
- π§ Use headphones with active noise cancellation β the sound of the keys will be heard only by you.
- π± Install a third-party keyboard without sounds, for example: Fleksy (minimalist keyboard with sound settings), Chroom (default sounds) Simple Keyboard (open-source solution without unnecessary effects)
β οΈ Note: Some third-party keyboards may collect data about your input. Before installing, check the app's permissions on Google Play.
If you use Xiaomi frequently in public, consider a vibrating option instead of sound. This is less noticeable to others, but retains tactile feedback. The setup is available in the same Sounds and Vibrations section.
