Why Xiaomi Redmi may be missing sound and where to start checking
You picked up your Xiaomi Redmi to listen to music or answer a call, but instead of the usual tunes, silence. The sound disappeared suddenly, for no apparent reason, and now you don't know what to do. This problem is common among owners of Redmi Note 10/11/12, Redmi 9/10 and other models of the series, and the fault can be both software failures and hardware malfunctions.
Before you take your phone to the service center, you have to check a few key things yourself, and 60 percent of the time, you can recover sound without disassembling the device -- just reset the settings, clear the cache, or update the firmware -- but how do you know where the problem is? Let's start with the simplest tests.
First, determine which sound is missing:
- π Speakers - no sound when playing music, video, system notifications.
- π§ Headphones β the sound disappears only when you connect a wired or wireless headset.
- π€ Microphone: The person who is not listening to you during the calls.
- π Calls β the phone doesn't ring, but the music and video playback is normal.
If the problem affects all the sound sources, probably the firmware or hardware failure, but if the sound is only lost in the headphones or the speakers, the reasons may be more local, and then we'll look at each case separately.

1. Software glitches: how to return sound without repair
In most cases, the sound is lost because of MIUI errors or application conflicts, and let's start with the simplest solutions that don't require special skills.
Rebooting the phone is the first step that is often ignored: press the power button for 10 seconds until the screen goes out, then turn the phone back on. This will reset the temporary errors in the audio drivers. If the sound appeared, the problem was a short-term failure.
Volume check and Do Not Disturb mode. Sometimes users accidentally activate silent mode or turn the volume down to zero.
- π Press the physical volume button upwards β the scale should appear on the screen.
- π± Open Settings β Sound and vibration and make sure Media slider is not at zero.
- π Go to Settings β Do not disturb and turn off the mode if it is active.
Resetting the audio settings helps if the settings have been changed by third-party applications (such as players or evens).
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner and select Reset app settings.
- Confirm the action β it will return the factory sound parameters, but will not delete personal data.
Check the volume with the buttons|Turn off the "Do Not Disturb" mode"|Reboot the phone.|Update the firmware (if available)-->
2. Cleaning of cache and data of audio applications
If the audio is lost after installing a new application (e.g., VLC, Spotify or a game), the problem may lie in the conflict of audio drivers.
Follow the instructions:
- Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- In the search box, type Media and select com.android.providers.media (or Multimedia Storage).
- Click Clear Cache and Clear Data (if available).
- Repeat the steps for Bluetooth, Phone and Google Play Music apps (if installed).
After cleaning, restart your phone. If the sound doesn't appear, try removing the last apps installed - they could have overrecorded the system audio settings.
π‘
If the sound is gone after the MIUI update, try rolling back to the previous version via Settings β About Phone β System Update β Three Points β Select the Service Pack.
Check of headphones and 3.5 mm connector (if any)
If the sound is lost only when you plug in the wired headphones, the problem may be in the 3.5mm connector or in the headphones themselves.
The headphone test on another device, connect it to a computer, another phone, or a player, if there's no sound, it's a problem with the headset, if there's sound, it's the jack or the software settings of Xiaomi.
Clean the 3.5mm connector, and the dust, moisture, or oxidation of the contacts can block the sound. Take a flashlight and inspect the connector.
- π¦ If you see dirt inside, clean it gently with a toothpick with cotton wool soaked in alcohol.
- π§ If you get moisture, leave your phone in a dry place for 24 hours (such as silica gel).
- π Try to connect/disable the headphones several times - sometimes the contacts "stick."
Forced switching to speakers, and sometimes the phone freezes in headphone mode even after the headphones are turned off, to reset that state:
- Connect the headphones and make a test call (the sound should go to the headset).
- Without turning off the headphones, reboot the phone.
- After turning on, disconnect the headphones - the sound should return to the speakers.
What if your phone doesnβt see the headphones at all?
4.Diagnostics of speakers: how to tell if they are broken
If the sound is missing from all the apps (music, video, calls), but the headphones are working normally, the speaker is the problem.
Checking the main and conversational dynamics:
- π Call your phone from another device β if you hear a bell, but very quietly, the speaker's mesh filter may be clogged.
- π΅ Turn on the music and alternately cover the upper and lower speakers with your finger, and if the sound only disappears when one of them is closed, that speaker is faulty.
- π Use test codes: ##4636### On the Audio menu, check the Speaker and Earpiece. If you have Not supported next to them, the speaker is not recognized by the system.
Cleaning the speakers. Dust and debris are a common cause of silent or distorted sound.
- Take a soft toothbrush and walk gently through the speaker grids.
- Use a spray of compressed air (to clean keyboards) - blow out the dust with short presses.
- Do not use sharp objects β they can damage the speaker membrane!
The critical sign of a speaker breakdown is that there's a sound, but it's very distorted (wheezing, cracking, interrupting) that indicates membrane damage or contact break, in which case the speaker needs to be replaced.
| Symptoms. | Probable cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| It's sounding, but it's very quiet. | Clogging of speaker or mesh | Cleaning with brush/compressed air |
| The sound disappears when the phone is tilted. | Bad contact plume speaker | Disassembly and inspection of the plume |
| The sound is only in the headphones. | Failure in audio routing settings | Resetting settings or firmware |
| Crackling and wheezing when playing | Damage to the dynamics membrane | Replacement of the speaker |
5.Mic Problems: Why the Speaker Can't Hear You
If you hear someone while you're calling, but they can't hear you, it's a problem with the microphone. On Xiaomi Redmi, there are usually two of them: the main one (bottom) and the secondary one (for noise reduction).
Testing the microphone through voice recording:
- Open the Dictaphone app (or install it from the Play Market).
- Make a recording in a quiet room.
- Listen to it β if the voice is barely audible or accompanied by noises, the microphone is faulty.
Physical injury check:
- π Look at the bottom end of the phone, where the main microphone is (a small hole next to the USB-C connector).
- π« If the hole is clogged with dirt, clean it gently with a plastic toothpick (not metal!).
- π§ If the phone fell into the water, the microphone could oxidize β in which case only a replacement would help.
Call resets. Sometimes the problem is network settings:
- Go to Settings. β SIM-maps and mobile networks.
- Select your SIM- card and click Call Settings.
- Reset to factory settings or enable Voice Improvement (if available).
π‘
If the microphone is running in the voice recorder but doesn't work while calling, the problem is with mobile network settings or firmware. Try switching from 4G to 3G in Settings β SIM- cards β Preferred network type.
6. Hardware malfunctions: when without repairs can not do
If all the software methods have been tried, but the sound has not come, it's because of the hardware failure.
Damage to the plume of the speaker or microphone, often after a phone drop or a careless disassembly.
- The sound disappears when you press the body in a certain place.
- The speaker works, but with strong distortions.
- The phone can't see the connected headphones.
Oxidation of contacts after moisture is injected, even if the phone is not sinking, high humidity or condensation can cause corrosion.
- π§ Sound appears and disappears chaoticly.
- π The phone overheats in the audio chip area.
- π± A moisture notification appears on the screen in the connector (if there is a sensor).
The audio chip is out of order. This is the most serious malfunction, because the chip is responsible for processing all the audio signals.
- π Complete absence of sound in all sources (speakers, headphones, microphone).
- π The phone does not respond to test commands (e.g. ##4636###).
- π₯ The problem occurred after a failed update or firmware.
β οΈ Warning: If you suspect an audio chip is broken, don't try to flash the phone yourself, which could permanently disable it.
The cost of repairing hardware faults on Xiaomi Redmi:
| Breakdown | Cost of repair (β½) | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Replacement of the speaker | 800β1500 | 1-2 days |
| Replacement of microphone | 600β1200 | 1 day |
| Repair of the plume | 1000β2000 | 2-3 days |
| Replacement of audio chip | 3000β6000 | 3-7 days |
7. Firmware and factory reset: extreme measures
If the sound is gone after updating MIUI or installing custom firmware, the problem may be in the damaged system files, in which case the factory reset or flashing will help.
Reset via Settings (saves files but removes apps and settings):
- Go to Settings β About the phone β Reset settings.
- Select Resetting (not to be confused with Delete All Data!).
- Confirm the action and wait for the reboot.
Hard Reset β removes everything from your phone, including photos and contacts, only if other methods have failed:
- Turn off the phone.
- Press the Power button + Volume up for 10 seconds until the Mi logo appears.
- From the Recovery menu, select Wipe Data β Wipe All Data.
- Confirm the action and wait for the completion.
β οΈ Warning: If you have installed custom Recovery (e.g., TWRP), a hard reset may result in a phone breeze, in which case, run the official MIUI through the Mi Flash Tool.
Fastboot flashing is the most reliable way to get back to work if the sound is lost due to a "curve" firmware.
- Download the official firmware for your model from the Xiaomi website.
- Unpack the archive and install the Mi Flash Tool on your PC.
- Transfer the phone to Fastboot mode (clip Power + Volume down).
- Connect your phone to your PC and run through Mi Flash (select Clean All).
