Do you listen to music at low volume, and after a couple of minutes, Xiaomi's phone suddenly stuns you at full power? Or does the speaker itself jump to maximum during a conversation? This problem is familiar to many owners of Redmi, Poco and Mi smartphones β and it's not always related to breakdown. 80% of the time, the system settings, conflicting applications or features of the MIUI firmware are to blame.
We analyzed user reports on 4PDA, Mi Community and service centers, and tested 12 Xiaomi models (from Redmi Note 8 to Xiaomi 13 Ultra), and found that spontaneous volume increases can occur for 7 key reasons, from a banal bug at uniform volume to hardware malfunctions of the audio chip.
- π Diagnosis by symptoms (when and how the sound jumps)
- βοΈ Step-by-step correction instructions for each cause
- π± List of models most affected by the problem
- π¨ Warnings on what to do if nothing helps
1. bug in the function "Adaptive Sound" (Adaptive Sound)
The most common reason is Xiaomiβs automatic volume control, which is supposed to adjust the sound to the environment, but often malfunctions. Adaptive Sound (or Adaptive Sound in global firmware) analyzes noise around you through a microphone and can mistakenly mistake quiet sounds for the need to increase volume.
Especially often the bug manifests itself in:
- π§ Headphones with Type-C or Bluetooth 5.0 connection type+
- π± Redmi Note models 10/11, Poco X3/X4, Xiaomi 12T
- π Playing music through Mi Music or YouTube Music
How to turn it off:
- Go to Settings. β Sound and vibration.
- Choose Adaptive Sound (or Adaptive Sound)
- Turn off the slider or uncheck the checkmark from Automatic Adjustment.
βοΈ Check out Adaptive Sound
If the item is not on the menu, then your model does not support it β move on to the following reason.
2. Conflict with sound control applications
Third-party applications like Volume Booster, Equalizer FX, or even Google Podcasts can intercept volume control and knock down MIUI settings, for example, equalizers often change sound levels in the background, and boosters force the volume to peak.
How to check:
- Start Safe Mode (click the Shutdown button β βReboot Safe Modeβ).
- Listen to the audio for 10 to 15 minutes. If the sound doesn't jump, it's third-party software.
- Return to normal mode and remove apps from the list below.
| Annex | Typical behavior | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Volume Booster, Super Volume | Forced volume up to 100% when playing | Remove or disable autostart |
| Equalizer FX, Music Volume EQ | Changes the sound levels in the background, causing jumps | Reset the equalizer settings or delete |
| Google Podcasts, Spotify | Automatically adjusts volume between tracks | Disable "Normalization of sound" in the application settings |
| MIUI Cleaner, Security | Clears the cache of the audio system, knocking down the settings | Add to auto-cleaning exceptions |
β οΈ Note: If the problem persists after removing the applications, check Settings β Annexes β Permit management β Autostart. Turn off autostart for all audio-related programs.
3. Failure to serve media.audio_flinger
It's an Android system process that routs sound, and it's often stuck on Xiaomi because of:
- π Quick switching between speaker/earphones/Bluetooth
- π± Use of custom firmware (e.g. xiaomi.eu)
- π Lack of RAM (relevant to Redmi) 9A/8A s 2β3 GB RAM)
How to fix it:
- Reboot your phone β it will reset the service media.audio_flinger.
- If it doesn't work, follow the commands via ADB: adb shell su pm clear com.android.providers.media
- For advanced users, please run the Audio Modification Library module through Magisk.
What to do if you do not have access to ADB?
4. Damage to Type-C connector or headphone contacts
If the sound only jumps when wired headphones are connected, the problem is almost certainly physical damage:
- π Oxidation of contacts in the Type-C connector (often after moisture is ingested)
- π§ Headphone wire break at the plug.
- π Short circuit in audio chip (relevant for Redmi Note 9 Pro after falls)
How to diagnose:
- Put the other headphones on, and if there's a problem, it's the phone connector.
- Light a flashlight in the Type-C connector: if oxides (green/white coating) are visible, cleaning is needed.
- Try to move the headphone plug a little bit. If the sound jumps, the wire is a problem.
β οΈ Warning: Do not use alcohol or metal objects to clean the connector! Take a wooden toothpick, moisten it in isopropyl alcohol (90%+) Clean the contacts carefully, and then dry the phone for 1-2 hours.
5. bug in MIUI firmware (list of problematic versions)
Some MIUI builds contain critical audio system bugs that cause the volume to spontaneously change.
- π² MIUI 12.5.3 for Redmi Note 10 Pro β the sound jumps when the screen is locked
- π² MIUI 13.0.4 for Poco F3 β The volume is reset to maximum after the call.
- π² MIUI 14.0.2 for Xiaomi 12 β bug with adaptive sound in Bluetooth headphones
Decisions:
- Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img fastboot reboot recovery (you need official firmware from en.miui.com)
- Update to the latest version via Settings β Update system.
- Install custom firmware (e.g. xiaomi.eu or Pixel Experience).
| Model | The Problem Version of MIUI | Corrected in |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10 Pro | 12.5.3.0 | 12.5.6.0 |
| Poco X3 Pro | 13.0.2.0 | 13.0.4.0 |
| Xiaomi 11T | 13.0.12.0 | 14.0.3.0 |
| Redmi 9A | 12.0.15.0 | 12.0.18.0 |

Before you firmware, back up via Settings β Additional β Backup. A rollback to an older version of MIUI can result in the bootloader being blocked!
6. Failure of the audio chip or speaker
If all software methods did not help, the problem may be a hardware breakdown:
- π Audiochip (Qualcomm) WCD9340/9341 or MT6359) β Fails to function after overheating or falls.
- π’ Dynamics β in case of physical damage, it can produce distortions that the system mistakenly compensates for by increasing volume.
- π Capacitors on the board β swell over time (typical for Redmi) 7/8 after 2β3 years).
How to diagnose:
- Put Bluetooth headphones on. If the sound jumps and there, the problem is in the chip.
- Call your phone from another device, and if you hear distortion, it's the microphone or the audio chip.
- Put a flashlight on the speaker, and if you see damage to the grid, you need a replacement.
β οΈ Warning: Audio chip repairs at service center will cost between 3,000 and 8,000 β½ (For Xiaomi over 3 years old, it is often cheaper to buy a new phone than to fix the old one.
7. Viruses or malware
Some viruses (such as Android.Trojan.Spy or FakeApp) intercept media control to:
- π Turn on the advertisement at full volume
- π± Follow you through the microphone.
- π° Imposing paid subscriptions to βsound boosters"
How to check:
- Install Malwarebytes or Dr.Web Light and scan the system.
- Check the list of installed apps in Settings β Applications. Delete suspicious ones (for example, with the names "Super Sound", "Volume Master").
- Open Settings β Battery β Battery usage. If an unknown application consumes >5% of its charge, it could be a virus.
π‘
Before scanning for viruses, disconnect from Wi-Fi and mobile networks β some malware blocks antiviruses over the Internet.
