Why Xiaomi Smartphones Make Sounds at Launch and What to Do About It
The audio signals that turn on and off a smartphone are standard MIUI features that were originally intended as a device health indicator. However, for many users, these tunes become an annoying factor, especially if you have to reboot your phone often in public or at night. Unlike other brands, where boot sounds can be turned off through standard settings, Xiaomi has traditionally hidden this option deeper β or does not provide it at all in some versions of the firmware.
The challenge is that the methods of disabling depend on the MIUI version, the smartphone model, and even the firmware region. For example, on the Redmi Note 10 Pro with the global version of MIUI 13, the path to audio settings may be different from what you see on the POCO F4 with Chinese firmware, and after system updates, the previously working methods sometimes cease to work β so we have compiled the current solutions for 2026, tested on the latest versions of the software.
Method 1: Disconnect via standard MIUI settings
To begin with, the most obvious method that works on most modern Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices running MIUI 12-14 is important: this method may not be available on some budget models or regional firmware (for example, for India).
Instructions:
- π± Open the Settings app** (the gear icon on the desktop).
- π Go to Sound and Vibration (or Sound & Vibration in English).
- π΅ Scroll down to System Sounds and find the items: Power-on sound)
βοΈ Checking before switching off sounds
If you don't have these items on your menu, the manufacturer has blocked them for your model, in which case you can go to the alternative methods described below.
β οΈ Note: On some devices (e.g. Xiaomi) 12T s MIUI 14) On/off audio options can only appear when the headphones or external speaker are connected. Try plugging the headset in and repeating the steps.
Method 2: Use Do Not Disturb (DND) Mode
If the system sounds are not turned off through the settings, you can bypass the restriction with the Do Not Disturb function, which will not eliminate the melodies completely, but will make them inaudible in most scenarios.
How to set up:
- Go to Settings β Notifications and Status bar β Do not disturb.
- Activate the mode by transferring the top slider to the "On" position.
- Click the Schedule and set the time of action from 00:00 to 23:59 (round the clock).
- In the Exceptions section, uncheck all ticks except Alarm and Media (optional).
Now when you turn your phone on/off, the sound will be blocked automatically. Less method: this mode will also turn off all notifications and calls, so it is not suitable for everyone.
π‘
If you need to temporarily turn off sounds (for example, overnight), use a quick turn on DND through the notification panel β swipe down and tap the icon Β«π crossed-outΒ».
Method 3: Remove system sounds through file manager (for advanced)
This method requires root rights or access to system files via ADB. It is suitable for users willing to risk system stability for the sake of silence. On some models (for example, Xiaomi 13 Ultra), deleting system sounds can cause a boot failure - back up!
Step-by-step:
- Install a file manager with access to the root folder (such as Root Explorer or Solid Explorer).
- Go to /system/media/audio/ui/ or (for newer MIUI versions): /system/product/media/audio/ui/
- Find files: poweron.ogg β the sound of poweroff.ogg β the sound of the switch off
.bak
poweron.ogg.bak
Reboot the phone.
| Xiaomi model | The Way to Systemic Sound | Risk of failure |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 11/12 | /system/media/audio/ui/ | Low. |
| POCO F4/F5 | /system/product/media/audio/ui/ | Medium. |
| Xiaomi 13/14 series | /vendor/overlay/media/audio/ | High-pitched |
β οΈ Note: On devices with Dynamic RAM Expansion (virtual memory) deleting system files can cause a bootloop error. Before manipulation, disable this function in Settings β The phone. β Memory. β Expansion of RAM.
Method 4: Disconnect via ADB (without root)
If you donβt have root rights but you have a computer, you can use Android Debug Bridge (ADB) to turn off sounds. This method works on most Xiaomi devices with MIUI 12+ and doesnβt require unlocking the bootloader.
Instructions:
- Download and install ADB Tools on PC.
- Turn on USB Debugging on your phone: Settings β About Phone β MIUI Version (tap 7 times to activate Developer Mode) β Additional β For Developers β Debugging over USB.
- Connect your phone to your PC and execute: Adb shell settings put global power_sounds_enabled 0
- Reset the device.
To bring the sounds back, use the command:
adb shell settings put global power_sounds_enabled 1π‘
The ADB command only works until the next reset, and after the MIUI update, you may need to repeat the procedure.
Method 5: Resetting the sound settings to the factory
If previous methods didn't work, try resetting the audio settings, which won't delete your data, but will return all audio settings to the box-like state, sometimes helping to unlock hidden options.
How to reset:
- π§ Open the Settings. β System and device β Resetting settings.
- π Select Reset Sound and Vibration Settings (or Reset Sound & Vibration Settings).
- π Confirm the action and restart the phone.
After reset, check the Sound and Vibration section β sometimes the options to disable system tunes reappear.
What if the reset didn't help?
Frequent problems and their solutions
Even after successful disabling of sounds, users are faced with nuances, and here are the most common situations and ways to fix them:
- π The sounds are back after the update MIUI: Updates often reset user settings. Repeat the method you selected (e.g., reset the user settings, ADB-command) or check if the options appear in the menu Sound and vibration.
- π Turn off sounds play and turn ons don't (or vice versa): This means that the sound files are stored in different folders: /system/media/audio/ui/ and /vendor/overlay/media/audio/.
- π« No access to system files even from root: On some models (e.g. Xiaomi) 12S Ultra) folders are protected by additional permissions. Use the command: adb shell chmod 777 /system/media/audio/ui/
