Did you just buy a new Xiaomi smartphone and notice that when you type messages or enter a password, the keyboard works silently? Or maybe after the MIUI update, the usual tap sound disappeared? This problem is familiar to many brand users - from budget Redmi to flagship Mi and POCO. You can turn on the keyboard sound effects in seconds, but the settings menu in MIUI sometimes hides the obvious options in unexpected sections.
In this article, you will find current ways to turn on the keyboard for all firmware versions (including MIUI 14/15 on Android 13/14), as well as solving typical problems - why the sound may not work even after activation, how to change the volume or type of sound signal. We will analyze the settings for both the standard Gboard keyboard and the branded Mi Keyboard, and at the same time we will tell you how to return the sound of the presses in messengers like WhatsApp or Telegram, where it sometimes turns off separately.
Why is there no sound on Xiaomi when you press the keys?
Before you turn on the sound effects, you should understand why they might have gone missing. Here are 5 of the most common reasons:
- π Do Not Disturb or Quiet Mode β Disables all system sounds, including the keyboard.
- π± Update MIUI β after installing a new version of the firmware, the keyboard settings can be reset.
- ποΈ Manual shutdown β accidentally tapping the keyboard settings menu (especially relevant for children or older users).
- π Speaker problems -- if the sound is only lost in the keyboard, and the music and notifications are working, it's the software that's to blame.
- π€ Optimizing the battery β MIUI Sometimes limits background processes, including keyboard sound effects.
If the sound is lost periodically (i.e., then not), check Settings β Applications β Application Management β Keyboard and make sure that it does not have any power consumption restrictions. Also, look at Settings β Sound and vibration β Do not disturb β it may have a silence schedule activated there.
Method 1: Enabling sound in MIUI settings (for Mi Keyboard)
The Mi Keyboard is installed by default on all Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones. To turn on the tap sound:
- Open any application where the keyboard appears (such as Messages or Notes).
- Touch the gear badge (βοΈ) on the keyboard panel to open its settings.
- Go to Sound and Vibration (or Keyboard Settings β Sound in older versions of MIUI).
- Activate the Sound Switch when pressed (or Sound Effects).
- If you wish, adjust the volume with a slider or select another sound profile in the Sound Type menu.
Important! Some models (like the Redmi Note 12 or the POCO X5) may have a slightly different path. If you don't find the Sound section, try:
- π Go to the phone settings β System and device β Language and input β Current keyboard β Settings.
- π Or enter in the search by settings the request "keyboard sound".
The Mi Keyboard is installed as the main keyboard.
The sound on the phone is not disabled by the physical button
Do Not Disturb mode is off.

Method 2: Adjust the sound in Gboard (Google Keyboard)
If you use Gboard, the algorithm will be different, and it's popular with Xiaomi users because of its enhanced input and sync features with your Google account, to turn on the sound:
- Open any text field and call the keyboard.
- Press the gear icon (βοΈ) keyboard.
- Select Settings, then go to Sound when pressed.
- Activate the option of Keyboard Sound (or Sound Effects).
- In the Loudness section, you can adjust the level (from 10% to 100%).
Gboard also has additional audio themes, such as "mechanical keyboard" or "retro game" sounds.
- Return to the main Gboard settings.
- Select Themes β Sounds and listen to the available options.
What if Gboard doesnβt have a βClick Soundβ option?
Method 3: Checking system sounds in MIUI
Sometimes the problem is not the keyboard, but the global settings of the phone's sound, for example, if the system's sound effects are disabled, the keyboard will also be silent.
- Go to Settings. β Sound and vibration.
- Make sure that Media Slider and System Sounds are not at zero.
- Scroll down and check the Additional Settings section:

Critical detail: on some models (e.g. Xiaomi 13T or Redmi K60), the keyboard sound is tied to the system profile "Sound". If you select the profile "Vibration" or "No Sound", the keyboard will be silent regardless of its settings.
| Xiaomi model | The Way to Setting the Keyboard Sound | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 11/12 | Keyboard settings β Sound and vibration | The sound works only with an active "Sound" profile. |
| POCO X4/X5 | Language and input β Current keyboard β Settings β Sound | Gboard includes sound separately from Mi Keyboard |
| Xiaomi 12/13 | Additional settings β Touch sounds | Supports 3D-keyboard sound MIUI 14+) |
| Redmi 10A/10C | Settings β System β Language and input | No volume control - only on/off |
Method 4: Reset keyboard settings (if no sound is turned on)
If you tried all of the above methods, but the sound never came, you may have had a keyboard glitch, and resetting:
- For the Mi Keyboard: π± Go to Settings. β Annexes β Application management. π Find the Mi Keyboard in the list and select it. ποΈ Press Warehouse. β Clear the data (this will reset all keyboard settings, including the dictionary).
Gboard
- π± Open the Settings. β Annexes β Gboard.
- π Select Reset (or Clear Settings in New Versions).
List of standard audio files for the keyboard in MIUI:
- π΅ KeypressStandard.ogg β Standard Pressing Sound.
- π΅ KeypressSpacebar.ogg β sound for space.
- π΅ KeypressDelete.ogg β sound when deleting the symbol.
- π΅ KeypressReturn.ogg β Enter key sound.
β οΈ Warning! Changing system files without root permissions can cause crashes. If you are not sure about your actions, use alternative keyboards from Google Play that support customization of sounds (for example, Chroom or Fleksy).
Problem Solving: There is sound, but it doesnβt work properly
Sometimes the tap sounds turn on, but they're weird, like they disappear after a few seconds, play late, or sound intermittent, and here's a list of reasons and solutions.
- β³ Sound delay: Occurs due to optimization MIUI. Try disabling Mi-optimization for the keyboard: Settings β Annexes β Application management β keyboard β Battery β No restrictions.
- π The sound disappears with a long set: It's a bug MIUI 14/15. Solution: Enable Performance Mode in Settings β Additionally. β Performance mode.
- π§ Sound only plays on headphones: Check to see if the Sound option is activated through the speaker in the keyboard settings. Also clean the headphone jack (sometimes the phone mistakenly "thinks" they're connected).
- π Too quiet sound: In MIUI The volume of the keyboard is tied to the system sounds. Increase the volume through the physical buttons when the keyboard is active.

If the problem persists after all the manipulations, check your phone for viruses (for example, through Malwarebytes) β some malware blocks system sounds.
